Some people load up on celebrity VAs; I've got two of the three Keiichi Morisatos. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Just a heads up... I'll be checking out early to catch my Bills as they face the Falcons tomorrow. If the next two picks aren't submitted before 5:00am Eastern, I'll send my 9th round draft selection (and a backup choice) over to Nosredna so he can make it on my behalf. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

You are leaving for the game that early? You really are a hardcore fan! That's a lot of tailgating you'll be doing. I hope you can make your own pick, but if not I'll be there for you. Enjoy the game! I hope McGahee runs all over that Falcons defense and the Bills defense can stop the Michael Vick experience.

Big Board (http://home.comcast.net/~abersold/Draft.htm) updated. I was too tired to educate myself about John Tyson's characters, so I gave him an avatar to commemorate his role as the narrator of Najica. The avatar I created distils the essence of that series.

Arcturus
09-25-2005, 01:11 AM
<Arcturus> Ladies and gentlemen, we are now in the ninth round of the voice actor draft! Tear yourselves away from your precious football games and listen to the REAL experts! This is Arcturus, coming at you live from the league office, located somewhere in between Olympia and Bellingham!
<martialstax> And I'm Mike Dungan, coming to you from a small white pickup on Interstate 5.
<Arcturus> We've got a lot to talk about, as we're into the ninth round of drafting. There have been some quality voice actors drafted, including a few old favorites, but the biggest name is B-Rad's drafting of Patrick Stewart. Stax, this move has some people crying foul.
<martialstax> Well, I think some people see it as a loophole. I see it as strategy. Those that think drafting a Hollywood actor is a cheap way to increase their team's exposure will downgrade thier votes. Others will think it's a great choice. But he's a legitimate draft, having been in Steamboy. We'll see if it hurts or helps B-Rad.
<Arcturus> He was also, of course, in Nausicaa. When all is said and done, he's a quality actor, and a positive addition to B-Rad's team. If voters decide to reward him for it, then they will make it so. Meanwhile, EmperorBrandon has snagged two old favorites for his team: Julie Maddalenna and Emily Brown.
<martialstax> Julie and Emily have been together in several different shows, but most significantly in Saber Marionette J Again, where Julie was Lime and Emily was Lorelei. It just seems natural to cast them together again.
<Arcturus> It'll be interesting to see how they fit into EB's cast. Julie typically plays young, high-pitched characters, and so it's reasonable to assume that she'll be cast as one here - or perhaps in the mascot role. I've never heard a bad performance from her - she's a great choice. I can't predict who Emily Brown will play, however. She could be anybody.
<martialstax> She's very versatile. She's probably best known for her role as Melfina in Outlaw Star, but as you say, she could play anyone. Meanwhile, Vicious opted for Tenchi's grandfather, John Smallberries, and the dry monotone of Anna Cummer out of Vancouver.
<Arcturus> I don't think there's going to be much surprise in how these are cast. Anna Cummer may be destined for Rei. And it makes sense - her most well known role, Vanilla in Galaxy Angel, is the Rei of her series. Smallberries is a clear-cut choice for Fuyutsuki, and I'm sure is capable of having the right sardonic tone to make that role work.
<martialstax> I agree on both counts. After a brief foray in New York and Vancouver, bctaris has returned to LA for Dave Mallow and Melissa Fahn. Melissa went late in the last draft as well. Are people really overlooking her that much?
<Arcturus> If they are, they shouldn't be. Melissa is awesome. Perhaps Mars Daybreak will bring her back into the public eye. With Jocelyne Loewen on his team, bctaris is quite stocked in the cute voices department. Dave Mallow, one of the most underrated voice actors out there, could potentially play a number of roles. Gendo, Fuyutsuki, and maybe even Kaji - although his voice might sound just a bit too old for him.
<martialstax> With his only other male VAs being Tony Oliver and J.B. Blanc, he's still got plenty of places to use Dave. Jocelyn is another VA I'm surprised to see drafted this late. Considering how well-recieved her work in Nurse Witch Komugi, Galaxy Angels and Popotan is, you'd think she'd go much quicker.
<Arcturus> Well, as the final rounds go, we'll see more and more gems like Loewen and Fahn get snatched up. These are the rounds where it counts to know your voices. BigPants made some interesting draft choices in John Tyson and Aaron Dismuke. With Kevin Corn already on his team, could BigPants be having second thoughts about his Shinji, or is Dismuke bound for a smaller role like Kensuke or perhaps even Kaworu?
<martialstax> He certainly would be interesting as Kaworu. I drafted John Tyson in the next to last pick in the last round of the first draft. It's good to see he's moving up. I think he'd be a good candidate for Fuyutsuki.
<Arcturus> Nabeshinji delved into the largely untapped pools of Austin and Carolina. He took two of their best, Larissa Wolcott from Austin, and Scott Simpson from Carolina. Sami Harte was also taken recently by Ben Phillips- will we be seeing more actors taken from these pools, or will they be overlooked from here on out?
<martialstax> Actually, I do think we'll be seeing more actors from the smaller talent pools as we continue. It's more a case of people looking deeper at their collections, rather than LA and Houston being tapped out. In addition to the always adorable Sami Harte, BenP took William Frederick. He's been New Gen's go to guy for elderly characters for quite a few years now.
<Arcturus> Frederick has been in the business for a long time now, and he hasn't slowed down at all. I'm thinking he's a potential Keel Lorentz or Fuyutsuki. And I certainly agree that the book has not yet closed on Austin - it would be silly to let actors like Joey Hood and Josh Meyer slip through undrafted.
<martialstax> Yes, there are several good actors down Austin way that are being overlooked. Where are all the Happy Lesson fans? I see porkchopexpress has taken an old favorite in Doug Smith, and a bit of a surprise choice in Kaeko Sakamoto, better known for directing than acting. I think nearly everyone remember's Doug's tour de force as Kintaro Oe in Golden Boy. How will PCX use him, I wonder? On the other hand, it's obvious that Kaeko will be used for Pen Pen, having voiced Uzume in Ai Yori Aoshi.
<Arcturus> That's not Kaeko's most famous role, however - she played the strange marshmallow-like blob Mokona in Rayearth. In fact, attendees of SakuraCon 2004 got to hear her deliver her famous "Pupupu" line in person! I've got a feeling Doug Smith is going to be playing Toji. He seems right for that role.
<martialstax> I can definitely see that. Victor Lewandowski took advantage of his back to back picks by taking David Born and Chuck Huber. Both characters are good at voicing adult males, but I don't think either are terribly well-known.
<Arcturus> Chuck Huber has received at least some recognition for his work in Fullmetal Alchemist as Shou Tucker - I recall seeing his name thrown around during award nominations not too long ago. Born is slightly less well known. You can count on both of them playing adult characters, the question is which ones. Splitter made some good choices with the irresistably cute voice of Willow Armstrong, and the slightly more mature sounding Meredith McCoy. While McCoy has played younger characters, like Kagura in Fruits Basket, I have a feeling that she could be a late Misato pick.
<martialstax> After hearing Meredith as Maria Ross in Fullmetal Alchemist, I can definitely see her as Misato. And let's not forget she's Fujiko in Funi's Lupin III dubs. So she can certainly do adult and sexy. Speaking of Fullmetal Alchemist and Lupin III, Yukichan105 has taken the voice of Maes Hughes and Arsene Lupin III: Sonny Strait.
<Arcturus> He now has two potential Kajis with Strait and Jason Douglas. I tend to think Douglas would be best suited for Fuyutsuki with Rob Mungle taking on Gendo. This would leave Strait for Kaji, which is a good match. But in the end, it's up to Yukichan.
<martialstax> Very true. Seeing what the players have in mind for their cast is what makes this so much fun. Keeping it down in Fort Worth, Geoduck has taken Fruba's bad boy, Jerry Jewell, and Huntressfan has snapped up the voice of FMA's Roy Mustang, Travis Willingham.
<Arcturus> The defending champion probably has Jewell in mind for one of the optional roles. Kaworu would be a good choice, but I think the best role for him would be Toji. With Willingham as only his third male, HFan is probably going to use Travis to play Kaji.
<martialstax> I think that would be a good choice. He's got the right combination of irreverence and intensity. Moving on, I see Bitterman has chose an actor who has probably been in more ADV dubs than anyone else, John Swasey.
<Arcturus> Swasey is generally suited for adult characters. He can't play Gendo, since he already played that character once. I'm sure this is another Fuyutsuki.
<martialstax> I don't believe I'd use him for anyone younger than that. PsychoRabbit has been mining a steady vein of Canadian talent in this draft. This round sees him taking the voice of Heero Yui from Gundam Wing, Mark Hildreth. And now that you've seen his pick, you must die.
<Arcturus> Wasn't he the leader of the Gundam Backstreet Boys?
<martialstax> "Whoa! Oh-Oh! WhoaOh Oh-Oh!"
<Arcturus> At any rate, Hildreth should be a solid addition. PsychoRabbitt has enough male voice actors to fill out his cast, but his next pick will need to be somebody to play the last of the four required female roles. Finally, we have Murasame, who picked Doug Erholtz.
<martialstax> He's not someone I'm overly familiar with, though he's had no less than 17 roles in Marmalade Boy. That's Studio E for you. Judging by his resume, it looks like he'll probably be best in an adult role, though he could be a good Toji.
<Arcturus> We're coming down to the wire now, and the final picks are coming up soon! We'll bring you as much insight and wisdom as we possibly can, so stay tuned! This is Arcturus, bidding you a good evening.
<martialstax> Reporting from Highway 522 eastbound, this is Mike Dungan. Good night, and good luck.

Emily Brown seemed to be a nice choice for a character I've been missing for a while and been meaning to fill in (planned on casting that character as someone else, but that VA got taken sooner than I thought). I thought of her somewhat late, but I'm glad I did.

Because there are a few VAs that have been taken the last two rounds that I'm not that knowledgeable about, I'll return the favor with one many people will not know. An old favorite, a perfect voice for the last role I need, and to diversify my cast even more, the first from Manga UK.

Wha? That's almost as strange as The Bitter One not watching Giant Robo - Slayers is a lot of fun, as long as I can pretend the third season doesn't exist.

Excuse me. I grew up in Massachusetts in the 1980s. The New Kids were on every TV and radio station CONSTANTLY. I must have heard that shitty music five million times before their fifteen minutes finally ended.

Sure, we believe you. I mean it's not like you could change the channel/station whenever they came on. It's not like you didn't have to pull the money out of your wallet when you saw the CD's and posters in the store. /images/graemlins/devil.gif

nice to know british actors are getting represented well in the draft. That now makes two! (+2 more, I can't count apparantly...)

In all honesty, I hope that once you've had a chance to watch all of it, and both English dubs, you'll write up an article. I want to read it.

I'm guessing she might be your Pen Pen (at least that was what I would have drafted her for) because of her role as Chibi in Dragon Drive. Though I think she's probably better known for her role as Flay in Gundam SEED.

I never saw Dragon Drive, but I saw Gundam SEED. Haro!
As for your pick, I'm going to guess you just nabbed yourself a Pen Pen as well because of her role as With in D.N.Angel....

Blame B-Rad for grabbing Brimmer. Though if I had Brimmer I would have taken Marinker in the last round anyway. Now I go for my second 10th role option.

Well how about that? I'm gone for a day, enjoying some football and some MGS3 and Round Ten is already underway? Man you guys move fast.
Anyway, it's time to unleash my pick for Round Nine.
I see three names here that I like very much. I am quite surprised with some VA's being drafted this late, one in particular is Richard Epcar. It was quite the oversight so I was glad to see him finally snatched up.
Another pick I liked seeing came again, from Vicious: Tamara Burnham Mercer. I expected her to go sooner, what, with Juliet Cesario taken as well. Though I know her only from You're Under Arrest!, she performed so wonderfully in the role that she cemented a spot on my favorites list. Would she make a good Asuka? (Huntressfan, you missed out on her!)
However as much as I enjoy the performances of these fine actors, my favorite of the round pick falls to the Rabbitt with snatching up the ever-excellent Allison Shipp. A shame you can't recast her as Misato, as that role was the reason that she became a favorite of mine. But with that, who would you cast her as, do I wonder?
