Well last night i watched the film that Dreamworks didnt want to dub number 1: Millennium Actress.

As you all should know, for the UK release, Manga Entertainment UK decided to have it dubbed by a British studio/VAs.

And you know what? They did a great job!

I dont have a cast list to hand (ill post one on Wednesday, when im at home), but stand out voices include Chiyoko, who was voiced by one person, unlike in the Japanese version where 3 different people voiced her for her different ages, and also the camera man. Hes played slightly spaced out, which really works well.

The translation seems very accurate to the sub script, which unfortunatly had one or two moments of hard of hearing-style subness. (you know like (chuckles))

Aside from that the subs wernt dubtitles, which i know some peoiple will say they are....

My only complanit is a lack of any extras on the English language side of things. Would loved to have seen a behind the scenes in the recording studio style extra.

Anyway, big thanks to Manga Ent for releasing this movie in the uk and giving it a dub, to Village Productuions for doing a great dub and a very small thanks to DW for letting Manga dub it for the UK release.

Hopefully my copy should arrive Thursday, but it's good to hear that the Dub didn't ruen out too bad /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Maybe we should hope that Dreamworks keeps getting films and putting them out as sub only - it might give the UK anime industry a chance to get a regular dub studio going again.

Interesting. What is the R2 picture/sound transfer like?

Wow, they sure got that out fast. I figured there was gonna be a longer wait like with Innocence. Any chance you could post some clips? I'm trying to figure out if I wanna replace my R1 copy or not when I order Innocence R2 next year.

As for the video quailty. Well on my portable player it looked a bit grainy at times. However, haveing just played it on my Computer it looked pretty good, no grain was really noticeable on here. (most of been the portables screen, i guess)

Any chance of the dub making it to the states?

As much as I like the idea, it would be unlikely unless something strange happened at Dreamworks. The same goes for the dub of Innocence.

There's no way Dreamworks would allow a competing version of Millenium Actress into the states, especially one with a dub that would make it even more desirable.

The only way I can see that happening is if overseas sales for the R2UK disc are good enough to make dreamworks take notice. For Millenium Actress I have my doubts but for Innocence, there's an outside chance it could happen.

I went in to pick up MA this morning, but they only had the two-pack with Perfect Blue. As much as I love PB, I don't need another copy of it. According to the girl at the tills, they didn't even get any of the standalone MA two-disc sets at all, so I had to order it in, which is gonna take a week. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif

I think I'm destined to have bad luck with this film, though - I bought the R1 disc a few months ago, and only managed to watch it once before some bastard stole it.

sorry for bringing this back from the depths /images/graemlins/happy.gif

I've just watched it, and the dub seems pretty good with some nice performances.
It may not be up to quite the same standard as a lot of the current US dubs, but much better than i'd feared it might be considering the lack of experience in the UK at dubbing anime in recent years.

I would definately listen to any other dubs by the same people in the future.

If anyone wants an audio clip of a particular part let me know and i'll try and do it.
I've got a list of a few i'm going to try and do when I get the time, but they are mainly from early on, before I actually got into the film fully (and forgot to make notes of the times codes for clips)

*raises hand* I don't have any paricular parts in mind, but I'd like to hear some clips if you can manage it.
