View Full Version : Is Death Note edited?
I was flipping through my copy of Death Note and noticed on the page with copyright info it said “Some art has been modified from the original Japanese edition. I only have the English version so I can’t say for sure it has been edited, but hopefully someone who has both versions could check it out. It may actually be nothing since there was a similar disclaimer in Tokyo Boys & Girls but no one actually found an edit.
mod edit - itty bitty title change to (hopefully) reduce mass hysteria.

we could also take art to mean that they retouched the sfx as that could also be construed as a change I wont be up in arms tho tell mine ships from rightstuf and I can compare it to my jap tanks.

Yeah, and then there was Ultramaniac where they apparently just changed an address in one of the side free talks. While I've been considered buying this for a little, since it's still only a "maybe" I'd be happy if/when any of you could check this out. Thanks,

Holy crap, that subject line scared me. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif
I have the original tanks so I can check this out if no one else gets around to it, but I haven't received the English version yet.

Yeah, no kidding.. I'll fix that a little, I think.
Also, since I know there was some concern over this a while back, I'll apologize now to any concerned parties that while I originally had planned to compare my review copy against the original, I didn't end up having access to it in time to get the review up early. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

Probably just retouched SFX. The disclaimer VIZ uses for edits, as they did in Zatch Bell, is, "Some scenes of nudity and violence have been modified from the original Japanese edition."

It was actually the grades the girls were in as well (which kinda changes their ages)

I just got a copy of the english version over the weekend at Anime Weekend Atlanta.
From what I can tell, it doesn't look like there were any drastic changes. No artwork edits that I could tell (maybe some sound effects, but nothing obtrusive). One thing I found kind of odd was that they translated Light talking about searching the internet for Kira, as "putting it into Google"... Or something around those lines.
Viz got a deal with Google these days? /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif
Other than that randomness, it looks pretty clean. No other changes that I can recall. I really enjoyed it. The omake in the back was also very amusing. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

It's on pg 65 of the Viz version, for cross-checkers.
It's possible that they're just using the term "Google" the same way people use "Xerox"... I do it all the time myself. Then again, I also use Google a lot.

Not to get into too much detail, I'm considering picking this up but I was wondering if there's a chance if later volumes of Death Note will be edited for nudity and such?

Since when does Death Note have nudity? /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif
