Daphne in the Brilliant Blue, or, Sam Regal Has Fun With Half-Naked Girls. Half this forum tried to talk me out of getting this series when it was announced, the other half tried to talk me into it. In the end, the half-naked girls compelled me to buy it. I'm glad I did. Carries Savage, Wendee Lee, Michelle Ruff, Megan Hollingshead and Erika Weinstein have never failed to deliver. And Doug Stone as the ever suffering Branch Manager is hilarious.

In volume 4, there are some great guest VAs who show up. The last two episodes of the disc are a two parter about a runaway boy and a terrorist plot. Sam brought in VAs from all over Texas to help flesh out the show. Travis Willingham (lately of Fort Worth), Sami Harte (Austin) and Vic Mignogna (Houston) all have roles. I think I'm starting to guess at some of Sam's casting choices, though. In the preview for one episode called "The Old Kook and the Sea", my immediate thought was Michael McConnohie was going to voice the old man and I was right. But he does it with a pirate's voice! Arrr! It's great work from him. And then there's the episode with the three criminal brothers who keep showing up like a running gag, voiced by Sam Regal, Patrick Seitz, and J.B. Blanc using a great tough guy American accent. And this time, we meet their younger sister, voiced by a new name to me, Kirsten Potter. She's a real highlight in this one, which is saying quite a bit considering who plays her older brothers.

I'm really enjoying the show, and Sam Regal's dub is really in a great groove right now. If you don't mind the fanservice (and I feel sorry for anyone who does), then you really should be getting this show.

I know nothing of Daphne, but I'm glad Potter is showing up in more things. She was in the last volume of Rumiko Takahashi Anthology as another in the series of distraught housewives in that show. Really unique voice, huh? I checked around on Google about her and she received rave reviews, among other notices, in a play in LA called Sex Parasite which Liam O'Brien was also in. I figure he might have brought her over to NGP. In fact Liam made a post (http://www.dubreview.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t546.html) about the play when it opened early last year over at Dub Review...which you even responded to, amusingly enough.

True, but it was a year and half ago. I'm an old man and I forget things easily. I noticed that Kirsten also voiced Kenta's mother in this volume, using a much different voice from what she used for May. She could very well be another great find for NGP.

No excuse. Even a casual fan would remember every name and its context for many years.

(That was funny though--I just put her name and some other info back into Google to find the review I had read a couple months ago and for some reason that DR post came up on the first page which I hadn't seen before.)

A great find indeed. The range of voices and characterizations that NGP has at its finger tips, and which they manage to find, is amazingly deep and varied. Every new show continues to impress and surprise.

I'll warn you, Sami doesn't sound like Sami. In one episode, she voices an announcer and an old woman. In the next, she a stewardess, but it's not credited. Ironically, that's the role where she sounds the most like Sami. Travis and Vic always sound like Travis and Vic. Vic actually has two roles in the same episode.

Tee hee...but isn't that what a voice actor is supposed to do? Change their voice to make it sound different? *smirk*
I think I did a whole bunch of little kids in the background too. grin.
Lemme tell ya...if ya need a "mean old man" I can do a pretty good one.
Sam and Liam are super cool dudes to work with. It's a totally different way of recording from what I was used to, took me a few minutes to get used to the whole "three beep system" and I was shocked to see how CLEAN the soundrooms were. WOW! No dingy carpeting, no stains on the floor, no rickety chairs, no cardboard boxes to hold your cup of tea. I actually saw nice HARDWOOD flooring in one room. WOW. NGP's soundrooms were like something outta "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" compared to what I'm used to. Seriously. *smirk* Not that I don't like the old booths at Monster Island or even the ones in Houston, but yeah, these ones...I was afraid to mess things up. I was touching the walls of the one Sam was directing me from and I couldn't stop telling him about how nice and intact the foam was on the walls. There wasn't even that "ol soundroom smell" that I'm so used to.

Watchin Sam, Liam, and the other folk work their magic was definitely cool. Sam was super duper sweet to me, and Liam...he totally got into the script..he was like a coach almost...."can you sing it a bit..." and then he'd do an example of what he'd want. Totally blew me away. Got to watch him work with another voice actress for about an hour...super fun stuff.
Coming from someone so used to hearing the Japanese, translating in my head and comparing the script to the Japanese to make sure the translations were correct, then timing it, and then recording according to how much time you are given. It's a completely different way of doing things.
But definitely cool.
Jonathan Klein was super duper cool as usual, but then again, that's the way he always is, and I got to hang with Carrie for the better part of an evening. Grin. Went to Hardrock Cafe, got to experience the parking lot...umm...errr...I mean freeway, got to eat some really good hamburgers that Carrie flipped for, and went to cheesecake factory. It was a whole lotta fun. Everyone there was super duper sweet. =)

THANKS for the good words about Daphne, y'all. Extra special thanks to J. Klein for hooking me up with a stellar cast. The girls especially are fantastic, but it's been a real treat to work with so many other actors who come in for one or two episodes.

To anyone who hasn't, I encourage you to check out the show. It really gets better and better as it goes along.

And Michael McConnahie as a fiesty pirate will eternally crack me up.

Volume 5 is now out. We get a few filler episodes before an episode that advance the plot of Maia's missing memory. First up is some good fun with Erika Weinstein as Yu and Meghan Hollingshead as Gloria. Yu finds a baby on her doorste, and Gloria convinces her to keep the baby after revealing she grew up in an orphanage. There is some really good interplay between the two. It's especially interesting watching Yu's budding maternal instincts take over, and learning that Gloria really knows how to take care of children. The next episode is a great one for Michelle Ruff as Shizuka as she finds and takes home a wounded man. Next, Maia is kidnapped by the three brothers and their sister than have been a running gag all throughout the series. Great work from Kirsten Potter, JB Blanc, Patrick Seitz, and Sam Regal, as well as some stellar work from Carrie Savage as Maia. Finally, some forgotten memories finally begin to surface, and Maia returns to Siberia to begin searching for her past in earnest. Carrie is at her best when she's breaking through Maia's shell. Rescuing the people who kidnapped her, and fighting to regain her memories brings out the best in Carrie. This is excellent work from her, some of the best of the series so far.

Now that volume 7 is out, I thought it was time to revive this old thread. The last two volumes were three episodes each, but only two episodes on each disc were directly related to the plot. The other episodes were bonus episodes, sort of like OVAs.

Carrie does some stellar work in the last two volumes as Maia's world comes crashing down. The rest of the cast actually gets in the back seat to make room for Mia Bradley as Millie and the Ocean Agency regulars, like Travis Willingham, Liam O'Brien, Jennifer Sekiguchi and Yuri Lowethal. I was especially impressed with Yuri. This is one of the oldest characters I've heard him voice and it was a nice performance of a man stuck between his duty and his conscience.

The three criminal brothers played by Sam Regal, Patrick Seitz and JB Blanc made a triumphant return, as well as Kirstin Potter as their domineering sister. They were all hilarious as usual. And Hunter McKenzie Austin got to get a little badass as Tsubasa.

Overall, it was a great dub and a show I'm glad I bought.

A fine wrap-up to a fun series. I just wish we could have heard Megan as Maia and Carrie as Gloria personality-wise in that last episode instead of just swapping the voices; that would have been a real hoot as it was in that one episode of Girls Bravo.

I was thinking this too. And we didn't get to hear Carrie doing another character in that episode of Girl's Bravo, either. Of course that's the way it was written in Japanese, so there wasn't much that could be done at this end. Still, I'm thinking conspiracy. But on the other hand, we did get to hear Carrie as Maia impersonating Megan as Gloria and vice versa, which was hilarious in it's own right.

I thought it would have sounded better that way too, but that's how they did it in Japan. It would however require altering the script. There's that line where the Branch Manager notices their voices sound like each other. The way it is also helps to set up the final joke of the episode.

But if you really want it done, kindly send your donations to Sam Regal and his Cayman Islands account. Just keep sending him money. Sam will probably let you know when he's got enough money to redub the episode, or perhaps buy a resort home in a country that doesn't have an extradition treaty with the US. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Sorry to practice necromancy on this thread, but I just finished watching this series, and I loved it.

The performances were so much fun. If I had to pick out a favorite, it would probably be Megan Hollingshead's Gloria: I just love her "Ha ha and ha!" And then hearing Carrie Savage's Maia and Erika Weinstein's Yu, and suddenly I'm in a demented version of Haibane Renmei.

Then there's Michelle Ruff's friendly voice as Shizuka, Wendee Lee's cruel one as Rena, and Doug Stone's henpecked one as the branch manager... and that's just the main cast.

Gah. This series needs a sequel.

Well-done, everybody.
