View Full Version : Romancing SaGa-Plug!

PS2 RPG Junkies,
Romancing SaGa, the grandaddy of all the SaGa games comes out next week for the PS2.
It's got an NGP dub with many of your favorite VAs in the lead and supporting roles. You can play as one of 8 different main characters and each one is like playing an entirely different story. Sadly, it's directed by some no-talent loser named Jonathan Klein. But even his inept direction can't do much to affect the brilliant performances by many of your favorite actors and actresses.
Buy it, try it, you might like it.

Actually wouldn't the grandaddy of all SaGa games actually be SaGa for GB? Unless you're implying something else by that statement. Yes for the record the first three SaGa games were renamed FF Legend for marketing purposes.

Well that answers the question of whether or not the game is going to be dubbed and who's going to dub of it. Now then the more important question. Who is worthy of playing the role of Aisha and Myriam? Aisha being the girl who I beat the original version with. as Myriam, I just love her new look for some reason. Yay for the witch clothes!

Let's see I love every SaGa game I've played. The only one I have not seriously played is Romancing SaGa 2. Err well I'm waiting for something to happen in regards to that game. So I'm going to make an assumption here that I'll end up liking this game as well. Heck I already enjoy the music for the game. The new version of the final boss theme is so much better than the original. Plus this time I'll finally know what the last boss is saying.

WOAH! Really?! I'm surprised someone else chose NGP to do the dub for a video game... that's a first I presume? I've heard that almost all of the dialogue in the game has voice acting in the game.
And yes, I'm a fan of the SaGa series. I've had fun playing SaGa Frontier (PS1) and the almighty Romancing SaGa 3 for the Super Famicom. I can't wait to try it out.

Ah good old SaGa Frontier the game that got me into the series. Or would that be SaGa 2? But at the time I didn't know FFL2 was SaGa 2 in reality. And yes Romancing SaGa 3 is almighty. I love Tatiana Razajev as the guide book I have calls her. Although most know her as Tatyana Laseiv. She's so wonderful and divine. What?

And there is a ton of dialogue in the game. Almost every character says something.

From what I've read, the main challenge in Romancing SaGa is actually in getting a perfect game with all events completed. Partially because some events get closed off after awhile. In fact one poster at Gamefaqs even suggested the best bet is not to worry about getting a perfect game and just play normally the first time.
Heh in any case it looks like the one I know as Sherah is being called Shirach. Interesting. I guess I'll need to clall her that from now on. Either way Saruin is still Saruin and Death is Death.

How evil. I should really replay other SaGas to celebrate. Okay so I'm already doing that since I'm replaying Laura's quest in Unlimited SaGa. Yay for Michelle learning puree. Heh speaking of voice acting in SaGa. I'd love to know who does Asellus' voice in SaGa Frontier. Yes she actually has a voice in that game. A laugh yes, but it's still voice. I'd also love to know who's speaking during BT Ver 8 of Unlimited SaGa. It took me forever to figure out what they are saying during that despite the fact it's in English or wait would that be Engrish. Of course those are two questions only Square Enix could answer. Oh speaking of Asellus *Waves the Gina is better for Asellus than White Rose banner*

I played the Japanese one quite a bit and my recommendation is that if you aren't hard-core, or willing to spend a lot of time, get the strategy guide. It's an excellent game, but a bit offbeat and open-ended. FANTASTIC soundtrack. It has the best battle themes I've heard in a long time...maybe ever.
With the exception of the minstrel (who had an amazing voice), the Japanese voice cast was unbalanced and lackluster, so I'm sure the dub won't disappoint fans of the original.

FYI: It was the top selling Game in Japan for almost 4 weeks, it only dropped to #2 in the second week simply because they ran out of copies in the stores during first week.
J-Ray? Honestly, I forget if she's in it, but she isn't one of the main leads or the 20 operable NPC's. But there were about 450 characters and I had a lot of actors come in and do voices in the game.

I've heard many of the battle themes already. This final boss tune could dethrone "Angel of Death" from SaGa Frontier 2 as my favorite final boss tune from a SaGa game. Still it will be more fun to hear the tune in the context of the battles. Plus this version has a lot more battle themes than the original. Which should help a lot. I actually saw a battle with the mini bosses just before the final boss and instead of using the standard battle 2 theme from the original, it now uses an entirely new tune which is a lot more epic. Fitting because let's face it this is the battle before the final boss, the tune should give you that feeling.
Of course speaking of the final area, I still find it funny that even through I had no idea what the final area tune sounded like at the time. Once I reached the final area in the original version of the game, I could tell I was in the final area just because of the way the tune sounded. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Maybe it just means I'm a good guesser in that one case.

I'll take your word for it. I have watched videos of the game from the Japanese version, but since I can't understand Japanese it doesn't make much difference. Either way it won't matter too much how good or bad the Japanese voice acting is since, I only have plans to play the U.S version anyway. I may love SaGa to death, but I don't think I love any series enough to import a game in a language I can't understand. Unless I'm completely convinced a game will never come out here and I can afford to get it, I'm not importing.

Maybe he was planning to take a break once Gran Turismo 5 came out. Just kidding. Not like I'm any better, I replay certain games way too much. And when I finally stop replaying a game to complete something new, I'd either go back to replaying the said game, replay the new game multiple times and start replaying another game again.

1) No, like the Final Fantasy series, each of the SaGa games takes place in their own world, so you don't need to have played any of the other SaGa games.
2) How long it takes to complete is up to you. The game has one goal, and 8 possible characters, with different storylines, to play when you try to achieve that goal. So you could complete the quest quickly with 1 character by avoiding many of the story elements and then try it as another character and try other story options. Some might be really committed to completing the game as all 8 characters (which there may or may not be a reward for doing /images/graemlins/wink.gif ). But it's an open world for you to roam and explore.

That’s really COOL I must say!!!
I was looking forward to this game for quite some time but now even more so.
Good voice acting in a video game is very essential to me, it just adds to the atmosphere and overall immersion of the game and since Romancing SaGa will have lots of in-game dialogue it’s even more important to have a great cast!!!

Well Romancing SaGa for the Snes (Super Famicom) is the fourth game in the series. While Final Fantasy Legend as most people know it would be the first game in the series. Although none of the games in the series are connected.
Actually one of the selling points to Romancing SaGa for the PS2 is that the game borrows elements from various SaGa games. So it's kind of fun to see what came from each SaGa game. Obviously it uses the story and characters from Romancing SaGa. Well most of them. Some were dropped in the remake like Nataly, but her role was very tiny even for a SaGa game.
The people behind the game have stated that the game is different enough from the original Romancing SaGa that it may as well be considered a new game rather than a remake. Can't confirm this, but one person has stated that the creator of the series sometimes wants to refer to the game as Romancing SaGa 4 instead.

That's true, but there are definite advantages to it. I mean for one thing I can use experience from past games in a series to make it easier to deal with some stuff in later games. Plus sometimes a later game will reference an earlier game in the series. Catching the reference can make something a lot more enjoyable.
Oh speaking of Final Fantasy. Many consider Final Fantasy II to be in a sense SaGa 0 because the creator of the SaGa series had a lot do with the game's design and several elements of FFII battle system wise made their way in the first SaGa game in a sense. Of course the second SaGa game was when the system finally became refined.

Well since Lute really only has one dungeon to go through that's certainly believable. Sometimes I think he's meant to be the character for players to practice with since they don't have to complete anything besides meet one character and complete one dungeon. Of course gaining other party members to fight with Lute or in my case fight for Lute is a good idea.
I still wish they had made Fuse's quest. SF needs a remake bad for that reason alone. What I've read of posts about his novel is kind of fun since it involves all the quests. I guess the closest I can come is using the members of Irpo in Red's quest since all five playable members can join. Fuse, Doll, Silence, Cotton, and Rabbit.

Speaking of which, I hate the fact apparently PAL gamers got a better instruction booklet than we did. At least that's the impression I got from past posts at the Gamefaqs board for Unlimited SaGa. Ah well not like it matters since it took maybe 10 minutes to figure out the system enough to get by and all I had to do was learn as I go. Come to think of it, I did the same for SaGa Frontier itself.
Either way checking the dates from Gamefaqs, it looks like U.SaGa came out in Pal a few months after it came out here in the U.S. However I forgot when the game was announced for PAL. So it's hard to say how long PAL gamers should wait for an announcement before deciding to import the game. If they want to risk buying something they have yet to rent. I'm assuming you can rent in Europe.

Well either way Aisha sounds quite excited in her voice. I like Farah's voice. Too bad it will be awhile before she can join my party and give Hawke the boot. Ah good old Hawke needs to let other characters speak in battle more often. It's like he's a battle dialogue hog. Myriam is pretty decent. Which is important since she's the one I was after the most besides of course Aisha and Farah. Lucky for me Aisha was really easy to get. Yeah just start as her. Works for me.

You really should post a cast list soon. Interesting thing is the way the game is designed one can actually miss events and characters. Thus you may not hear the VA for the character regardless of whether you play in Japanese or English.
Over all it does get kind of weird to hear the same voices out of several towns people, but I'm sure that's the same way in the Japanese version. Besides that through voice wise I kind of like Farah for some reason. Of course it may also have to do with her personality. Although on the other than I think she may enjoy battles too much. Also Myriam is quite fitting which is good because she was the main character I wanted in my party. Of course I also ended up wanting Farah as well.
Either way I currently have Aisha, Barbara, Myriam, Diana and Farah. Although since a person I know told me about a cute girl I can recruit, I'm going for her and dropping Diana. Well maybe I should drop Barbara, but I have a bunch of spells bought for her, but then I can always use her as a main. Heh pretty soon, I'll be hearing what the final boss sounds like. Well after I do a few side quests and such to level up a bit. Especially the new girl Frieli (spelling) if I manage to get her.

You really should post a cast list soon. Interesting thing is the way the game is designed one can actually miss events and characters. Thus you may not hear the VA for the character regardless of whether you play in Japanese or English.

Well, I've had the same problem, after spending time and money to build these characters up, I'm curious to hear how some of the others sound, but I don't want to give up all the effort I spent training the characters. So I've got 2 games going at one time, one as Jamil, one as Albert.
Yeah, there are over 450 characters and sadly it was impossible to have 450 actors play them all. I think we almost got 100 or so. But you're right, even in the Japanese, you hear similar voices in each town.
OK: I'm not going to tell you all the cast members. But if you guess who is who I will either confirm or deny.

It really depends on where you leveled up the character and how. If you just learned weapon techs for the character it may not be much of a problem. Heck after all I switched Aisha to bows pretty late in her game and she's learned a bunch of bow techs. Actually she's done better with bows then she ever did with martial arts.
It seems the characters automatically gain stat increases even if they are not part of you party. I've recruited people for the fun of it much later and their levels were quite decent. Also I'm sure characters who can't join until much later will have stats to make up for it.
Although I'm not sure if characters only level up if they join you, leave and then join again. Hmm I could test that out with Claudia as I have yet to have her join. Wait a second here. In any case "stat wise" she has 47 STR, 41 VIT, 45 Dex, 47 AGI, 28 INT, 40 WIL, 34 COM, 38 CHA. So in general she's comparable to the other members even if her HP is the lowest.
The real problem comes when you spend money on a character for his or her spells. Spells can be quite expensive especially if you want the character to have a good amount of options. Like wise there is also spending jewels on a character. However my general point is it is easier to replace a fighter than a mage. Although replacing a combo of both is the hardest. Okay yeah I know if you want to get technical the hardest is replacing your main characters.
Still I've had a lot of experience with late comers and have enjoyed using some of them. Even in the SaGa series itself. My figuring is I don't care how late she can join, I want to use her anyway. Of course it's definite great bonus if the character joins early. I've actually switched my party several times. Such as getting rid of Hawke and Lizard Boy. Okay so in truth, in some cases I only had people join long enough to open up new places, but go figure. Either way if I can manage to get Frieli in my party this will be my final switch in the end.

Ah thanks for the information. As for guessing VAs, I'll consider doing that a bit later. Of course I'd need to read up on stuff, double check any dubs I have that are NGP and etc. Right now I'm still working on the game as I type and such.

Heh either I missed it or there is no cast list in the credits. Ah well so much for relying that idea. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif Although it's rather interesting that there is voice added to a certain scene during the final boss battle where there was no voice before. At least based on videos of the Japanese version of the final. Not that it's a bad thing per say. It does sort of make sense to have voice there. I'm talking about of course the part where Saruin goes into his second form and the pillars come down for the first time.

I'm currently playing Albert's quest and am really enjoying it thus far. The open ended play does get confusing at times, but figuring it out is really part of the fun. I currently have Albert, Sif, Barbara, Mryim, and Aisha. All the voices are really well done, too, though I can only recognize a few of the voices.
I just wish there was a way to get my hands on some gold besides completing quests and selling stuff. Buying upgrades and spells is really expensive.
Suwako Moriya
10-25-2005, 12:29 AM
It would be nice if it was easier to gain money. Still on the positive side that does actually make the choice of what to buy extremely important. Of course on the negative side it makes healing potions a waste of money since it's cheaper in the not so long run just to buying "water heal" for example and rely on that.
Then there is the problem if you buy spells for a character and replace the character, you'll have wasted a lot of money. The more spells bought, the more money wasted. Which is why at first I only really bought spells for Myriam and Aisha because I knew neither character would leave my party. Especially Aisha. I can't kick out my main. Although next time she won't be my main. Although I have yet to decide which of the seven other mains I want her to join.

Just a quick FYI... the retail price for Romancing SaGa has been slashed in half since its release 6 weeks ago. It can now be found for a mere $19.99 at online retailers like GameStop (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=281266).
Suwako Moriya
12-03-2005, 02:15 AM
Heh I figured the price would go down. However when it comes to games I want, I'm often not patient enough to wait for the price to go down. In any case in terms of the vocal cast. It seems some have speculated that Sherry Lynn voices Aisha. Come to think of it, it makes sense.
I really should actually get around to actually trying to guess the VAs. However I'm too focused on playing games right now to do that. Well actually I've taken a break from RS to avoid possible burn out. Actually no it's more like to get work done on a back log. Yes I actually do work on the backlog. Besides I completed three quest in a row. Although I'm tempted to go back to the game even earlier just so I can face a certain boss.
I will say that sometimes it did get silly in the first play through an explanation popped up for everything. However then again reading some topics and posts by people at Gamefaqs for various games, I think Square Enix doing it is justified. Almost like they were saying "Since you can't read the instruction booklet and incapable of figuring out blatant stuff, let's make sure you have no excuse not to notice this time."
Edit: Apparently someone pointed out that Gamestop is selling pre-owned copies for $34.95. Meaning that there must be a typo somewhere. You think pre-owned copies would be sold for less than new copies.
Every time I think about picking this game up, I get scared off by the characters' big heads. /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif

Well yeah the graphical style can take time to get used to for some. Although the main issue graphic wise is more the camera. I wish the game included camera control. Not that the lack of camera control makes the game impossible, but I still think they could have included it. Then again too many games have an issue with the camera as it were. Either terrible control or no control. Which is why I often check the map when playing Romancing SaGa. Whenever I have a map.

Well that confirms that guess by people at another board as wrong. Ah well there are other places to hear Sherry Lynn anyway. Either way eventually I'll get back to Jamil's quest after I finish up some other things. Still in this game the dub even gives you gameplay advice. If you find the final boss saying a certain line it's a sure fire sign you are either not strong enough or skilled enough to face the guy. Or maybe both.

Mr. Klein, is this true that no voice actors were credited in Square Enix's Romancing SaGa because of this union thing? Plus, I was listening to the character's voices and the only one that I am familiar with is the Minstrel's voice, voiced by Richard Cansino. If you are allowed to tell me the reason, feel free to do so.

Sorry, I didn't work with Mr. Cansino on this project. Almost all of my cast in the game are regulars in current and previous series I'm producing. Again, like the absence of Sherry Lynn from the game, I hope that won't detract you from picking it up.
As for the rest of your question, there was a cast list submitted for the game, somehow it wasn't published at the decision of the game distributor. I don't know why. Possibly it was at the behest of the Japanese, because there are cast credits for the Japanese VA's listed inside the game at the end, written in English, and somebody decided that was enough, but still I don't know for sure. That is why I haven't avoided confirming anybody who guesses right about characters.
After a while, I might post the cast list here. But for now I'll let the guessing game and the reduced price be an incentive for some of you to pick it up.

Actually I think he already owns the game. At least that's my impression from the topic he started at Gamefaqs for the purpose of trying to figure out who voices who in the game. It's the very reason I was checking to see if Sherry Lynn was in the game. Of course I found she wasn't and thus decided to let the people posting in that thread he started know.
On a side note. Speaking of Gamefaqs. If one more person refers to the Silver Dragon as "he" then err I'll do something drastic. Why can't people realize the Silver Dragon is female? I mean it's not like the voice doesn't give it away as well as the fact Silver Dragon is also Captain Silver.

I don't care who you think you are hearing. I'm telling you it isn't them. You don't want to believe me, that's your choice, albeit the wrong choice. Believe it or not there are people who sound a lot like other people in this town. I've listened to many radio spots and commercials where I was dead sure I knew who was the voice actor who did that role and when I told them I heard them on the radio/TV, they say "Nope, it wasn't me and you're like the 10th person who said it was." Now I doubt they would lie to me, since I'm not one to shout from the rooftops who played who in everything that doesn't involve me.
I've never worked with Sherry Lynn in my anime/videogame projects. I've worked with Mr. Cansino once briefly on one project. You want to tell me who I worked with or who I didn't, more power to you. It's like those IMDB fans who insist they know the casts of shows and movie titles better than the people who produce them. I remember once writing a letter to IMDB to correct them about a cast listing on one of my projects where some IMDB fans listed somebody else, instead of the right actor on a role. I explained I was the producer and that person didn't work for me on that project, but this other actor did. It wasn't an "alias", it was the wrong person. And IMDB replied "We don't know who you are, so were not going to believe what you say." Eventually, a long time later, it got corrected, but not by my input.
So if you want to be like them, by all means go ahead.

JK

You have to do this real early in the game so that Albert will still be in Isthmus Keep
1) Complete the mummy merchant quest and talk to him in the towns along the way until he reaches Oapu
2) Pick up Diana at Oapu (must not have recruited her or entered Isthmus region before)
3) Go on the boat to Melvir and lose to the mummy on the boat
4) Go into Faerie's Grove on Mask Isle and QS and restart until you exit at Isthmus (This is the step that I'm not sure if it still applies in the US release. It works in the JP release though)
5) Go up to 2nd floor of Isthmus Keep and pick up Albert.

Well from what I heard with Gray's quest is that one way around the 'ship' not being there is to go into the plains and leave through the other exit. Ie the one that does not lead back to Jelton. In any case Gray will be my seventh quest as it were so it will be awhile. Also Diana can be quite cool in general. Desperate situation in battle and what is her response? "No running from battle!" Poor Albert, Diana must scare him.

I like how Michelle Ruff voiced her - reminds me of Tatiana Whisla, except Diana does not ALWAYS sound pissed. And hey, considering that she pushed Albert into the sea to save him, before trying to fight a DRAGON, that quote sounds absolutely perfect. I have to go back and play through the beginning again of Albert's story simply to see her in the cutscene at the end of the intro chapter.

Guesses of the day: Patrick Seitz as Prince Neidhart, William Knight as Elder Nizam (Aisha's grandfather.), and Kirk Thornton as King Karl (Neidhart's father.).
Hearing Michelle Ruff voicing a couple of the extras no-names (The Crystal Palace servant Neidhart directs to help Aisha seems to be one of them.), and (Probably wrong, because high pitched female voices all tend to sound the same to me.) Rachel Hirschfeld seems to be voicing an extra too. I almost want to say that Carrie Savage is voicing Claudia, but the voice does not quite jive with my recollection of how Ms. Savage sounds.

While they may not be talking about the same instance I am thinking of. That is true in one case at least. Oh some of interesting about the final scenes during the ending. The cut scenes you will see during the trip through the final dungeon and etc will be partially dependent on what you did during the game. Same as with the ending. Well cut scenes for the lack of a better term anyway.
Obviously who you have in your party can effect things. Ie if character X is in your party he will not be part of ending scene Y. There is one aspect of the cut scenes during the final dungeon that may appear as over sight. However if you read between the lines you'll understand the truth. Even if Neidheart is in your party, he'll still be involved in a certain cut scene. Now this may seem like an over sight, but it's not. What it means is like many rulers that Neidheart has a double. The question is which joins your party. The real Neidheart or the double.

It's no secret that I love the game. It's rather odd through. If you play RPGs for graphics, heavy story, a traditional battle system and enjoy the following strategy then the game is not for you. Ie the strategy of kill IMPs, run to the INN, rinse and repeat until the game let's you win. You actually gasp complete quests to level up. However that doesn't mean fighting battles is pointless. Unlike what some will tell you. You learn techs during battles, you need to fight battles to use spells to learn spells through tablets, the more battles you fight and the hard they are the better the panels. I could go on, go figure.
Unlimited SaGa at its heart is a management RPG that's gameplay based. The story and graphics are not the reason to the play the game. In fact it seems 90% of the hate comes from how overly simple the graphics are. Which was done on purpose to pay homage to the idea of abstraction. Too bad the creator forgot people need graphics to enjoy games. Although I admit it, I wish the game used traditional graphics, but I still like the game despite that.
The reason I say it's management RPG is you have constantly make choices on how you will grow a character. Which panel do you place down? Which panel spot on your grid is the dump spot? How are you going to grow the character? I usually end up making a basic plan and then adjusting based on what I get.
Also for the record. After completing all seven quests in Unlimited SaGa, Ruby is my favorite lead, while Michelle is my favorite over all female in the game. Plus Mythe has probably one of the cooler final battles in the game. I kind of like it better than the one in Romancing SaGa in some ways. Especially given the nature of what is revealed.
Edit: Now the real fun is figuring out what they are saying during BT Ver 8 which is Mythe's final boss tune. I believe I figured out most of it. Except for one part. I'm not sure if it's "all things" or "whole things". Also it's talking not singing done during the tune. Yes it's in English or maybe Engrish. Of course the other fun part is to figure out the hidden meaning of the words said by the lady and then the guy. Yes it's a female voice followed by a male voice.

Yup, I'm an idiot.
I should be getting this for X-mas as I have bugged my mom so much about this game.

Try to find Mr. Howell (not his name in the game, but if you know Gilligan's island, you'll know when you found him).

I presume you mean Patrick - the performance was spot-on for Thurston Howell III.
Since I dusted off my copy and played a little more Romancing Saga again...
Michael Forest as Theodore
Barbara Goodson as Flammar (And I am pissed at reading what I have to go through to recruit Flammar's sister.)
And because I guessed wrong the first time...
Jennifer Sekiguchi as Claudia.

Ah wait now that you mention it. He does sound like him. Speaking of Patrick he certainly has an arrogant attitude. Ah, but that's the fun part. Yeah it was his turn to be in my party in the third quest I did. Along with several others.

Heck since I can't decide what new game to complete right now. I may as well just go back to Romancing SaGa come tuesday after my Sister's children go back home. Yeah time to complete Jamil's quest at least. Maybe by then I'll make my decision.

Heh if you're talking about how late she joins the party. Well there is a way to speed up the process as long as you have not done a certain thing.
If you are able to face Pyrix. Which you can do until you give him the Ice Sword. If you manage to kill Pyrix, you can visit the Netherworld. There you can visit Death. Have Death revive a member and he will tell you about the Frozen Fortress. This will cause the Frozen Fortress at the Frozen Lake to melt much earlier. Plus if you can beat Pyrix, you can probably beat the boss there.
Of course the real fun part to Frielie is the fact that you only have one chance to get her in your party and if you make her leave, or she dies of LP death. You can never get her in your party again. Still she does look cool.
