View Full Version : Recommendations for Deathnote vs. Monster?

Just realised the first volume of this was recently released and it's caught my attention. Any recommendations?
I know Monster is coming soon too and IIRC it's along the same basic lines as Deathnote.
So which one would you recommend, or both?
modedit: subj line tweak.
Your best bet would be to ask for recommendations in the AoD Advance Review: Deathnote v1 (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1148607&page=0&view=colla psed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1) thread. Bit of a warning though, don't highlight Yashiro's spoiler.

You could just edit it out, you know.

Doesn't really help, it's been quoted.

A mod could edit out the spoiler in quoted posts, if you really wanted to take it back. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
Edit: I noticed you edited your post -- but you actually quoted it yourself again later -- you should edit it from your second post. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif I removed it from mine...
PS: I'm going to fix this subj line a bit, so the thread isn't just a redundancy of the review thread....

I've only seen one episode of Monster, but heard good things about it
Deathnote...first off, this artist seems to have a habit of discontinuing his series (puppetmaster, hikaru no go). However, since it's already onto the second season, I think it's safer to say that Deathnote will end properly.
This is basically a detective story (conan, kindaichi) and thriller combined into a long epic. The main character is an anti-hero, and at times it just makes me really depressed that things might turn out for the worst, and sometimes they do (which means the suspense is good I guess).
There's little mystery to the story, but you have the "good" side and "evil" side constantly trying to outsmart/outhtink each other with tactics. Second season gets even more exciting with a 3-way battle.

First off, Hikaru no Go wasn't discontinued. And Obata isn't even the story creator for HikaGo or Death Note so you comment is pointless...

This is a Manga Recommendation Forum and the question is about the manga for both, not the anime.
Do you have a comment related to the manga?

I haven't read Death Note yet (it's on its way), but you should definitely pick up Monster. It is my personal opinion that everyone should experience Urasawa by either reading Monster or 20th Century Boys (Pluto is damn good too). He is a fantastic storyteller that knows how to engage the reader and keep them on the edge of their seat for volumes upon volumes at a time.

He creates really great characters too. Monster has a large cast of very likeable, well-developed characters. They all feel so real. That's one of the creepy things about Monster, is how real it all feels.
Monster is a brilliant story for any medium of entertainment let alone manga.

Yes! That's part of his greatness at storytelling. He's got great pacing and wonderful characters that you can instantly get attatch to and feel close.

Considering the fact that Deathnote does not have an anime out, he was obviously talking about the Manga.

Your snarkiness is a bit off base since I was going by what he actually wrote. Episodes & seasons would obviously refer to anime. Which is a somewhat more obvious clue than knowing if there was an anime. And he refers to "seeing" an episode in additions to "seasons."
And Monster which DOES have an anime is also discussed. So the word "obvious" does not quite apply, obviously.

(1) Well they "obviously" didn't in this case. If you took two minutes to look for evidence of a deathnote anime instead of blindly assuming that the original poster doesn't have the sense to know what forum he's in, you'd have known that. You know what they say of people who assume.

We don't need to get into a debate on what is obvious and what is not. I know nothing about Deathnote, but seeing the words "Second season" -- as opposed to "volume" or something, implies an anime rather than a manga to me. In fact, I can't recall anyone on the manga forums using "season" to refer to a single volume of manga, so I can see where Michael would think similarly. At the very least the anime terminology is confusing and worthy of clarification. (I suspect the original poster was comparing the Monster anime to the Deathnote manga.)
We now return you to the "Deathnote vs. Monster" thread already in progress.
If you have the money, get both. They're both worth getting. But if you had had to chose one....
Artwise, Death Note probably fits in the bishie category ish art better.Plotwise, Death Note is a probably more of psychological thriller type thing, What would you do if you kill people by writing their names in a notebook? And the consequences leading up to that.
Monster.... goodness, monster is so hard to explain. It's like a journey, but even the ending made me want to tear my hair out. this is more of situations and the facets of human nature type thing, except though you know for sure who is the EVIL being.... chasing after him and the havoc he creates, but it seriously messes with your head more than Death Note.

I haven't read Monster, so I can't comment on that, but Death Note -
I have a love/hate relationship with it. I personally think it would have worked better if it was shorter (towards the middlish-end of the first arc, it really gets dragged out) but it's a SJ title so that was never going to happen anyways. I'm also not a huge fan of the second arc since there's some pretty big changes, but hey, YMMV. It's still pretty good overall. And the art's pretty awesome ^^;
The first couple volumes, though, those really rock.

I disagree about knowing who the "EVIL being" is. After all, was Johann really evil? I suppose you'd have to read through the entire series to decide, but I didn't think he was. Rather; he was a victim of circumstances.
Anyways, on topic: Death Note is my 3rd favorite manga. Monster is my 2nd. Both are brilliant. There isn't as much Death Note in existance, so it's harder to judge. Since Monster is completed, I can easily talk about it. It's well worth getting and has one of the best endings ever in a manga, in my opinion. Death Note is very good so far. The first arc was superior to the second, and I believe it should have ended at the end of said arc. The new one is gradually picking up, although it is nowhere near as interesting. Mind you, "nowhere near as interesting" for Death Note is still fascinating. Theoretically, Death Note could be drawn out for 23 more arcs (those of you who are up to date should understand), but I believe it will end around volume 20.
Try to get both. If it's not possible, start with Monster.
Oh, and if you were wondering what my #1 is, it's Berserk.
