View Full Version : Princess Tutu, Volume Two

Being what it was required to prove (http://www.animeondvd.com/news/article.php?article_view=456).

What can I say? I liked watching Princess Tutu's second volume. It was fun. Strong dub. Very polished, with few weak lines in the entire volume. It's no less than I expected from the cast. They showed a lot of strength in the first volume, and that's carrying through very well. Naturally, Jessica Boone, Luci Christian, Jay Hickman, and Chris Patton are all doing really nice work. I'm extremely fond of Luci Christian's performance as Duck, which has great energy. She's always fun to listen to whenever Duck gets a little huffy. A very endearing performance. But the two performances that I personally enjoy listening to the most are Jennie Welch and Marty Fleck. The Narrator is rich and powerful. Not quite as forboding as the last volume, perhaps, but a lot of fun to listen to. Fantastic work there. Drosselmeyer is so much fun, and he's having so much fun!

I think Drosselmeyer became my favorite character somewhere in this last volume. I think he's the character I empathize with most. I mean, look at Tutu. You've got this unfinished story, and the characters come alive and let it all play out. How is that not fun? Drosselmeyer comes along and comments on the action every now and then, and almost every time he says what I'm thinking as I watch the show. I love how he's getting such joy out of watching the conflict and tension in the story build. My favorite scene in this volume involves Drosselmeyer when <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>he freaks out because Duck doesn't want to become Princess Tutu anymore and he just can't stand the idea that the story might go unfinished</span>. That just had me laughing out loud. And Drosselmeyer <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>is dead</span>, so of course he's doomed.

All in all, I'm having a lot of fun watching Tutu.

As with all Volume 1s... or in this case, Volume 2s... I expect pretty much everyone will get to watch these next few episodes of Princess Tutu before I do. Afterwards, I'll jump to the head of the pack, clip like crazy and hook a ton of people through Volumes 3-7... the volumes when dubs typically ramp up into high gear.

It's just part of the ADV routine I've grown accustomed to. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Although I'm a little disgruntled that I have yet to track down a copy of Gantz 8. I'm getting impatient waiting for people's MINDS TO BE BLOWN.

Actually, Tutu should only be on 6 discs. It appears that they're mirroring the JP release, which works out to a very nice three discs per chapter.

I'm really looking forward to watching Princess Tutu. I should be getting volume 1 from TRSI soon, and vol. 2 probably will be ordered after I watch it (provided that I like the show, which shouldn't be a problem since I haven't heard a bad thing about it yet).

He owns the site - it's to be expected that he gets early discs and spiffy press kits. But you, you're The Bitter One, and should lose all rights to the name since you've now gotten two discs of Tutu months early. How can you still be bitter after that!?!

I won't begrudge the Bitter one too much here as lots of people have already watched these episodes a bunch of times courtesy of the Anime Network.

Now if he gets to have sneak previews of ALL of Princess Tutu, I'll be compelled to take drastic action. Namely getting him plenty hammered at the next convention I see him at. He'll wake up the next morning with an Osaka tattoo hidden somewhere on him. He'll be branded for life.

I just watched this volume right now and it was fantastic. The dub continues to be really good. Duck is one of my favorite Luci Christian performances, she nails the role so well and from the commentaries I've heard her in she just loves playing her. The Narrator's voice is perfect, and Sasha Paysinger and Cynthia Martinez crack me up. The only part that sounded akward were the scenes in the first 1 or 2 episodes where Jay Hickman is screaming. But his other lines sound great.

As for the content on the disc, it is even better than the first disc, IMO. A lot of stuff happens in these 4 episodes, and there are some really well done scenes, especially in episode 8. The story is so good, it's very unpredictable and some of it had me on the edge of my seat. I love the beautiful artwork and the classical pieces sound great. I can't wait for more Tutu, this show is amazing.

I have to agree with you on this. In all honesty, I haven't been too big on Hickman's voice for Mytho. I think he's nailing the line reads, but the voice doesn't fit this gentle image I have of Mytho in my mind.

I'm surprised at how much I went from not caring a whole lot about this show and then falling in love with it last night while watching part of the second volume. You guys weren't acting crazy over this show for no reason. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Watched this. Loved it. Any criticisms I might make would only be petty.

So here are my petty criticisms: While Chris Patton's German pronounciation was outstanding (kudos to Chris and to his language coach(es)), there was a name mispronounced (by all who spoke it) that kind of annoyed me. "Kraehe": the final "e" in that name is definitely not supposed to be a long "e".

I adore the Noir dub, but damn if they didn't mispronounce some french terms as well. There's nothing like watching a great dub with remarkable performances only to have a term introduced that EVERYONE seems to mangle. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

I've been saying all along that the first five episodes did not sell this show to me - it's everything that happens after that that makes people fanatical about it. I purr with anticipation of how people react to disc three. (Very mild spoilers, if you can even call them that) <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> I didn't want to watch anything beyond the end of Chapter of Egg because I didn't think the second half could possibly improve the story at all. Jay Hickman's voice did seem to be a little off to me when I first heard it, but I think it grew on me throughout the first volume. It's quite interesting and unlike other roles I've heard from him. I took a gamble on the first volume when it came out and was pretty much instantly hooked (even trying to leap for joy with the opening song in my head), and then got Magic Users Club as soon as i could. I have no idea what's coming up in the series, but the wait is still painful. Or is that yearning? If i had volume 2 it should be sufficient ammunition to get anyone too slow to escape a viewing hooked /images/graemlins/devil.gif
One of the things that seemed odd to me at first was Jenny Welch's narration. It seemed like an even read and distanced from the show, but in the many months i've had to watch the first disc, my impression of that performance resembles a derranged and stern librarian, which meshes nicely with Drossellmeyer.
Another character i'm interested to hear more of is Christine Auten's Edel. I really liked her performance during the Giselle episode /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Now, back to testing my patience...

FINALLY got to watch this! (YAY!) /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Another EXCELLENT dub! (And Chihuahua ROCKS! I had to pause the DVD so I could recover from laughing! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif )

Great job from Luci, Jay, Jessica and Chris! Luci was amazing in expressing the sadness of Duck and Princess Tutu. Jessica was great in the way she handled Rue's confusion and jealousy. And Chris was superb (as usual) in his role as Fakir.

With the story shifting its focus to the characters and their motivations and emotions, there was a whole bunch of cool character moments in this volume. I can't wait for the next! (And I wish there was a next volume preview for this disc!) /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Then again, knowing that dlw had the checkdisks for BOTH Kaleido Star New Wings v1 and Princess Tutu v3 at AUSA, and he was willing to show them in the video room if the con could fit it in the schedule(I dunno if they were able to show it-- I didn't go to the con on Sunday /images/graemlins/depresse.gif /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif ) THAT was torture. /images/graemlins/depresse.gif

Finally watched this. I wasn't totally sure about the first volume, despite the amazing casting, but disc 2 knocked my socks off. Duck/Tutu is definitely one of Luci Christian's best performances ever. And Chris Patton speaking German was just awesome beyond description.

(The show itself is incredibly, exquisitely good. I haven't been this giddy over something since... well, since Kodocha started. The whole fairy tale theme really revs my motor--I wouldn't be surprised if Tutu became one of my all-time favorites.)

Volume 2 gets extra points for having a Kaleido Star: New Wings trailer. No, I didn't watch that six times in a row... I swear... /images/graemlins/shy10000.gif

I'd say "Our long national nightmare is over" but everyone seems to be ahead of me on this one. I watched it as soon as I bought it. I thought episode 9 was especially interesting. It was scripted by Chiaki Konoka, one of my favorite Japanese script writers (BGC2040, Lain, much of RahXephon.) The four main VAs of Luci, Jessica, Chris and Jay all impressed me, but I think I was most impressed by Jessica Boone. Her performance as Rue and Kraeheeeee (yes, Geoduck, that pronunciation grated on me as well) was mesmerising. I've waited a long time to hear Jessica get a meaty, mature role like this, and she is exceeding my expectations.

I caught that first time through, and laughed my ass off. I was really glad to see Kira in the "In the Studio" live action feature. Finding out that Kira voicing the Chihuahua was a completely spur of the moment thing was a huge surprise. "Why can't I be the dog?" And hooray to Jin for taking her up on her challenge.

Oh, and the dub outtakes were genuinely funny, probably because they were genuine outtakes, and not scripted.

Yeah, I think Jessica really stole the show toward the end of the volume (and that's no easy task). Ah, but saying that, I feel like I'm taking Luci for granted.

I feel like episode 6 suffered from a number of distracting scripting problems, but it wasn't enough to stop me from getting "officially" hooked on the show.

Jessica's been genuinely fun and enjoyable in her other signature roles like Chiyo-chan in Azumanga Daioh, Azmaria in Chrono Crusade, Misaki in Angelic Layer and Yuna in Maburaho, but I feel it's her amazing performance as Rue/Kraehe where she's proving her worth as an actress.

I just finished proofing the check disc for Princess Tutu Volume 3, and all I can say is keep watching, guys. Wow...

"Wow" is definitely an appropriate word. /images/graemlins/wink.gif (those eps. are the ones that secured Tutu's place among my highest favorite anime series) Just sent off my payment for Vol. 2, so hopefully won't be too long until I have it (shame my Best Buy isn't stocking it just yet...)

Just now that Tutu is back in production is enough holiday cheer for me. I honestly began to wonder if we'd ever see this day again.

Heh - those episodes propelled Tutu to my #2 favorite show as well...and what followed after that made it #1. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Volume 2 gets extra points for having a Kaleido Star: New Wings trailer. No, I didn't watch that six times in a row... I swear... /images/graemlins/shy10000.gif

I watched it at least two times /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif. Pretty cool stuff.

I've already watched these four episodes (thanks to TAN), but when we get to the voting for November, I'll definitely go back and refresh my memory. I did watch the extras and as always, those were really cool!

I finally got to watching this last night and... WOW indeed. I had some pretty high expectations for this one, but I just can't say I'm disappointed. Got to agree that Jessica Boone was just incredible and this likely will always be on of my favorites of hers.

Marty Fleck was incredibly amusing in some scenes here. He was one I was a little unsure on at first (since he didn't seem as creepy as the original seiyuu) but he's carrying the psychotic-sadistic material VERY nicely here... /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

The other major players are still doing awesome work. I really loved how Chris handled the scene where <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>he first talks to Duck when he sees her in duck form.</span> He's got some really cool material here, and he's just so perfect at delivering this role. Luci continues to be extremely adorable, and I've definitely taken a liking to Jay Hickman by this point (his voice of Mythos's feeling from ep. 7 for a very nice, intriguing kind of voice that was interesting to hear). I definitely look foward to some of his future work.

Out of the extras, I've only had the chance to check out the Outtakes and In the Studio stuff, but it was really good. Several of the outtakes had me laughing out loud (please include these on the rest of the volumes, ADV), and I thought the focus on some of the minor roles in the Studio extra was pretty neat. Shelley Calene-Black (Paulamoni) and Kira Vincent-Davis (Malen) continued the line of excellent episodic character work (and both are a bit unlike any other roles I've heard from them).

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite angry/hurt/proud/complex performances. Monica Rial as Izumi in Princess Nine, Lisa Ortiz as Shiori in Revolutionary Girl Utena, Lia Sergent as Morgan le Faye in the Ah My Goddess movie, and now Jessica Boone as Rue/Princess Kraehe in Princess Tutu. The way she says "I will give you nothing. I will let you do nothing" sent shivers down my spine. The almost imperceptible pause before saying "nothing" makes it all the more chilling. This is the sort of performance I dream about as both an anime fan and a dub fan.

I believe i may have hyped myself up into a frenzy for this disc too soon....I'm loving the show, but i'm being reminded a little too strongly of Magical Project S through Rue and Princess Kraeh(i)e.

Strongest performance of the disc for me was Duck. It was interesting watching the "in the studio segment" and watching how Luci gets that voice for Duck in a kind of animated way, but sounding so natural and easy when heard in the show. Plus it was a fun insight seeing the background of how the chihuahua voice came to be.

Jessica Boone's Rue had a chance to cover vulnerable material, and did that quite well, and Princess Kraehe was very striking; definitely made me sit up and pay attention to whatever she was about to say.

As i went through the first disc prior to watching the newly arrived volume, Chris Patton's Fakir didn't strike me as the possessive, cold, arrogant creep i'd thought he was in the first couple of viewings of the 1st volume, and the 2nd volume helped further that opinion.

Marty Fleck was still mysterious and imposing as Drosselmeyer, making the times he lost his composure even a little the more entertaining. While i initially saw him as a distant observer, he seems to be a more active meddler in this story he's being told.

TJP's Mr Cat was a more vulnerable portrayal in this volume two. Quite touching....i'll be rewatching this again this weekend if i'm at home long enough.

Oh yeah, Miss Edel creeped me out /images/graemlins/depresse.gif

But still fervently hanging out for the next volume /images/graemlins/happy.gif Keep up the good work!

Mr. Cat is totally underappreciated. Picking a favorite performance in Tutu is like picking a favorite finger not to have cut off, but let's just say that Mr. Cat is certainly not the pinky for me.

If it was legal in Texas, -I- would marry him.

I think people are starting to appreciate TJP more now. I first noticed him in Kaleido Star where he had three roles: The ballet instructor, the stage director, and Simon Park. All were very different performances, and a rewatch of the series really pointed out how good he was. And his Mr. Cat is just raising his profile even further. The way he suddenly becomes a smooth lady's man, er, cat, when talking to Paulamoni is brilliant.

I finally have it! The second volume! The wait was worth it to see Princess Kraehe again. Jessica, you rock!
