View Full Version : Does anyone remember a Star Wars manga?

It was several years ago when I was doing a lot of business at a sci-fi store in Portsmouth, NH. I wasn't really into anime at the time. I mean I had seen some tapes, but I certainly wasn't collecting anything. But I knew what it looked like. So I saw that they had some small books that I recognized as being manga (though I may not have known the term at the time). I noticed it was a comic version of the Classic Star Wars Trilogy. I flipped through it a bit and it looked interesting but i didn't buy it. Now I'm wondering what exactly that was because I'm planning on making a trip to Portsmouth and if they still have that book there I may pick it up. There's a good chance they may still have some since the store tends to have a lot of stuff that stays around for a while. I mean they make money but as an example the last time I was there they still had booster packs for the Babylon 5 card game that had been discounted a couple years previously. So I guess what I'm wondering is if anyone knows what I'm talking about. Did such a manga series actually exist? Who was involved with the production? I remember that I was impressed with how similar the art looked to the actual characters. Also I'm assumeing this was a manga. If this was actually a MIC, then i apologize. I'm operating on fuzzy memories, so please move this to OT if it wasn't an actual manga.

I think you're talking about the ones published by Dark Horse: link to A New Hope manga vol.1 (http://www.darkhorse.com/profile/profile.php?sku=97-696) If you look under books > title > Star Wars you should be able to find the rest. Hope this helps. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi are all broken into four volumes each. A New Hope's release actually won the "2000 Harvey Award" for Best American Edition of Foreign Material. At 96-pages, they do make for a pricy buy at $9.95 each, but there are some Star Wars fans who tend to buy anything. ^_-
There is also a Phantom Menace manga drawn by Kia Asamiya, but it's totally forgetable. It's only 2-volumes and has a slightly smaller page count per volume. You could also say that that one was probably commissioned by Dark Horse to coincide with the movie.
For the import-savy collectors out there...there are manga done of The X-Files TV series and a novel/manga-hybrid done of Kevin Smith's Chasing Amy.

There's a Chasing Amy manga? Weird...do you happen to know if it's any good?
And as far as Star Wars manga, is the Phantom Menace manga by Dark Horse the same one that was in CoroCoro Comics?

It's a single volume and is basically the script of the movie done as a manga/novel-hybrid, but all the art is by Moyoko Anno. You know, the creator of the josei manga Happy Mania?
I got my copy from Sasugabooks.com. (LINK (http://www.sasugabooks.com/product_info.php?products_id=4960))
I've never read it, but I have seen it on the bookselves at Waldembooks. I didn't get it for lack of cash /images/graemlins/sad.gif
