View Full Version : A question on release schedules

There is something I am wondering about release schedules:
On average, Tokyopop releases each volume once every two months, Viz every 3 months, Del Rey every 4 months and Dark Horse every 6+ months.
What about the Japanese manga publishers? How long do they normally take to release each volume of a manga?

I think it's usually about 3 months.
Though some series take a longer than others. It depends on how often chapters get published in magazines. A monthly manga title might take longer to release in tank form than a weekly title.

Yeah it all depends on which phonebook it ran in. They come out a lot faster in the weeklys than in the monthlys for obvious reasons.

Depends on the magazine frequency and chapter length.
Typically:
Weekly mags (Shonen Jump, Magazine)-- 2-3 months
Biweekly mags (Best Friend, Hana to Yume)-- 3-4 months
Montly mags (Asuka, Afternoon) -- 4-8 months

Where do you get your info from? Viz releases most titles every 2 months except for a few and I can give you a list or go to their website. TP rarely release anything bi-monthly now. Also only title of Viz's released every 3 months is Inuyasha.

[/ QUOTE ] Yes, I'm confused too. Currently, the quickest TP release schedule is 3 months, but all books are anywhere from 3-6 months apart (meaning poor sellers, like Lupin III and Kindaichi are released every 6 months, while slightly more popular things get 5, relatively popular get 4 and unbelievably popular often get 3.)

The slowest Viz titles are those that are flipped like Inuyasha or Ranma (which are released once every three months) or what is serialized in Viz's Shonen Jump. Everything else tends to be bi-monthly with the rare monthly release (like Rurouni Kenshin).

Recently, most Tokyopop titles switched from the bi-monthly format to a quarterly format (every three months). Less pouplar titles are an even longer wait. Supposedly, this is because of decreasing retail shelf space.
I don't buy that many Tokyopop titles any more but it's frustrating to wait for the few TP titles I do buy.
