So I did a panel by panel comparison with vol. #2 of Zatch Bell for the first half of the volume, and I came across one edit. This one left me speechless.
On page 65, as Zatch appears in the doorway of the elevator after running away from nurses, is supposed to be standing there with a syringe and scapel stuck in his head for comedic purposes (original image (http://www.panicnow.com/~jarhead/images/File0068.jpg)). There isn't any blood squirting or dripping, just these items stick out of the top of his head. These items were removed from this shot, as well as a couple others following where he pulls them out.
So yes, syringes in the head are a bad bad thing evidently. Of course, all the blood dripping off of Kiyo throughout the entire volume is left intact.

"Kids don't try this at home."
*sigh*
Viz must you pull this foolishness.

Oh that is completely ridiculous.
VIZ: "Oops, it's got some physical humor -- we'd better cut that right out of there!" /images/graemlins/relief1.gif
While I can understand some edits, although I disagree with them, this is bizzare.
Viz - kids aren't stupid. They know that needles hurt. They know that cutting yourself with a knife hurts. Of course, they're going to know that sticking a scalpel and a needle into a head will hurt. They're not stupid enough to think that it's okay, just from a single image in a comic book. /images/graemlins/icon_rolleyes.gif

probably afraid someone might do this for real to a nurse or a doctor cause they saw it in the book... well only reason i can come up with. fear of contamination from a used needle or surgical instrument is pretty high in a hospital. but still seems weird to me. wish they would put a message in the back of each book to explain each edit... sort of like how editors may explain why certain names/locations/stores are done or how and why jokes/puns are changed/translated.

I can see the editorial meeting now:
Editor A: "Oh dear, we can't have this!"
Editor B: "What's that?"
Editor A: "This boy here could come down with a serious staff infection with all these syringes!"
Editor B: "Sweet jeebus, get our photoshop hacks on it pronto!!"

(Okay, so I might be the only one amused.)

I repeat: Children aren't as stupid as adults think they are.

right, just like someone didnt lay right down in the middle of traffic after seeing it done in a movie. (football movie i think, forget the title but i read the story)
fact of life in the US... you can always sue someone else for your own stupid actions. you put a hot cup of java between your legs and you spill it... sue mcdonalds for it cause they didnt warn it you would be hot... and win!
not saying the reason behind the edit isnt dumb... just wish they would say why they would do the edit. probably wouldnt agree with it but would love to know the reasons behind it.

Ah, but I said that kids aren't as stupid as adults think they are. It's the adults that are more stupid than they realize. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif
(and yes, I'm starting to be silly now)

You know, I hate it when people use the McDonalds case (http://www.stellaawards.com/) as an example.
[ QUOTE ]
In February 1992, Stella Liebeck of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was severely burned after spilling hot McDonald's Coffee on her lap. Far from being a frivolous award, the investigation into her case revealed upwards of 700 similar documented cases of similar burns proving that McDonald's knew its coffee was dangerously hot. Liebeck and her lawyers sought a $20,000 settlement, but McDonald's refused.

I see your point: fear of being sued. And, yes, I know there are a lot of stupid people out there (who deserve the consequences from acting stupid), but if that's the case, guess what, VIZ? You shouldn't be in the Anime/Manga business in the first place! All that violence, blood and gore, sword slashings and shruiken and knife throwing, ETC. in Anime/Manga, what are you going to do about that? Edit all that out as well?
(I'm just paranoid about what Viz will do next to action titles such as Naruto, One Piece, etc.)
