2. Negima! #7 (Del Rey)
3. Ruroni Kenshin #19 (VIZ)
4. Bleach #9 (VIZ)
5. Naruto #1 (VIZ)

6. Bleach #9 (VIZ)
7. Naruto #2 (VIZ)
8. Naruto #7 (VIZ)
9. Negima! #7 (Del Rey)
10. Naruto #3 (VIZ)

Two more Top 10 lists, two more that are dominated by VIZ and Naruto, with volume 1 continuing to outsell the latest volume meaning more and more new readers are coming aboard. Very glad to see Death Note placing in the list this past week and I'm pretty shocked that Kingdom Hearts place so high.

Diamond Top 10 - September (Manga Only)
Note: This are for books that are solicited through Diamond only to comic books shops.
1. SAMURAI EXECUTIONER VOL 5 (Dark Horse)
2. HELLSING VOL 7 (Dark Horse)
[3. Lady Snowblood Vol 1 (Dark Horse) ]
3. RUROUNI KENSHIN VOL 19 (VIZ)
4. NEGIMA VOL 7 (Del Rey)
5. MONKEY KING VOL 1 (Dark Horse)
6. KINGDOM HEARTS VOL 1 (TOKYOPOP)
7. DEVIL MAY CRY 3 (TOKYOPOP)
8. YOTSUBA MANGA VOL 3 (ADV)
9. DEARS VOL 4 (TOKYOPOP)
10. ONE PIECE VOL 8 (VIZ)

More variety with Diamond. There is an error with the list here, as Lady Snowblood #1 placed above Kenshin (http://www.icv2.com/articles/home/7711.html) on the list with 3227 units sold.

That actually made the USA Top 150 list for that week too, placing at #95.

Didn't you read the review? /images/graemlins/wink.gif Heh. It'll place high because of the name recognition and existing fanbase for certain. I pimped/displayed it (and also Devil May Cry 3) at the bookstore and all the copies flew off the shelf. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif Some day someone will believe me that even gamers will buy manga about games they love. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif Here's hoping for a reprint of vol 1 of KH with color pages. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

(can't hurt to hope..)

Just to note (in case others are wondering, it's pretty obvious but I went to check) - the Diamond chart is for manga titles only, excluding other comics. On the Diamond numbers given at ICv2, the first manga title is #6.

Probably the bookscan numbers are manga-only too, but manga sells more at bookshops so it doesn't make as much difference.

Anyway I'm not saying it was misleading or anything, I just wanted to clarify.

Yes, I used the manga only chart from Diamond, but if you read the bottom of the ICV2 article, you'll see that manga dominates the GN best-sellers for BookScan.

Manga continued its domination of the list of graphic novels sold in bookstores, taking 24 out of the first 25 places and 47 out of the top 50. Two Simpsons titles (at #21 and #35) and DC's Identity Crisis (at #30) were the only non-manga volumes in the top 50.

The bookscan numbers include all graphic novels-- it's just rare that an American book cracks the top 10 (or even top 50!). Since Episode 3 and Sin City dropped off the charts over the summer, I don't think a American comic has been in the top 20. Manga consistently makes up 45-48 of the top 50.

Woo, I am soooo happy to see Yotsuba in the top 10.

But, wait a second, what happened to all the stuff I always heard about shoujo manga doing so well in the US? Isn't that like... ALL shounen? (I have no idea what Lady Snowblood is).

Or is it just that some big shounen franchises monopolize the very top, but the rest of the top 50 has lots of moderately to great performing shoujo manga?

Female manga buyers won't be buying from comic shops on average so you can ignore the Diamond list, but as for the others... I don't know, maybe you're right. Rurouni Kenshin probably sells a lot to females though? And even if shoujo manga is sucessful, it can't be expected to do better than popular TV series which represent a large proportion of those lists.

Don't say that girls don't shop at comic stores! That's like saying boys don't go to the mall. Actually in months when hit shoujo like Fruits Basket are released, they not only make the top of the Diamond manga list but have cracked the top 10 of all graphic novels sold in comic stores. I think a better measure would be to see what shoujo were released in this month and what week they were released; new series aren't going to do as well as DNAngel and FruBa. While we certainly sell a lot of Hellsing, Naruto, Battle Royale, and Kenshin, we order just as many Fruits Basket as any of those titles.

While it's true that some girls shop at comic shops, the females-reading-manga explosion didn't happen until Tokyopop managed to get manga into bookstores. Not all, but most of the girls who buy manga buy it from bookstores, and comic store numbers are heavily skewed to the male end of the spectrum.

From what I've seen, shounen titles tend to outsell shoujo titles for the most part, and sell to both males and females. So while shoujo manga does relatively well in the US (especially compared to shoujo anime), that doesn't necessarily mean chart-topping sales - rather, steady middle-of-the-road sales.

Just to clarify, I didn't say that. I said girls don't shop at comic stores 'on average' (which is a bit vague but you know what I mean). I'm pretty sure this is true for the reasons in Dani's post.

The shonen chart-toppers get quite a boost from network anime play, and Naruto's recent domination is a direct result of that. The shojo chart-toppers like DNAngel and Fruits Basket do have anime, but it's never had widespread airing. However, the success of Tokyo Mew Mew a la Mode is almost certainly related to Mew Mew Power being on the air.

Anyway, in months where Furuba and DNAngel books come out, they're right up there at the top of the chart, and Tsubasa has made good showings, but in the other months it's shonen shonen shonen. Some other standard shojo sellers like Legal Drug never top the charts but sell consistently from week to week putting them very high in the yearly sales rankings when all's said and done, but they don't make a big impact the week they're released.

While the actual rankings aren't listed, I think you'll see what the Top 10 is made of for the week ending Oct. 23. Naruto doesn't look to be leveling off as now all 7 volumes are now in the top 15, with the first volume shooting into the #1 spot. Nuts.

[ QUOTE ]
[T]his weeks figures (for the week October 23rd) show an even greater invasion of Naruto as all seven volumes make the top 15 once more with Naruto vol.01 heading all the way back to the top position again.

Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note and Rurouni Kenshin share the rest of the top ten with Naruto whilst Hana-Kimi vol.8 debuts the highest at #8. Once again though it is Tokyopop’s Kingdom Hearts at #2 that only just prevents Viz Media having a clean sweep of the top ten.

Yeah, I was looking more at the bookscan numbers which are, I thought, supposed to be pretty comprehensive. The note about series on TV definitely crossed my mind though.

Happy Birthday! /images/graemlins/relief1.gif Certainly that Viz is making a lot of money....hmmm but One Piece was also on Tv, but it's not gaining the popularity Naruto is. So, does this show editing is bad or not? Eh... I guess I'm glad for Viz, but wary.. very wary...

Thanks, I certainly wish for One Piece's popularity to grow, because an uncut release doesn't look like it will happen anytime soon.

The reason the One Piece anime doesn't help the manga sales that much is because it is an atrocity. The Naurto dub, however, has been very faithful to the original show, hence the huge popularity and gain in manga sales.

4Kids (who are releasing One Piece) just doesn't know how to properly treat an anime property by trying to americanize+kiddify a show to the point where it is hardly recognizable and no longer makes much sense - they make all sorts of nonsensical edits (soldiers carrying super soakers or the infamous hammer gun, changing Marines to Navy for no apparent reason, having fun with rubber knives, a main character sucks on a lolipop 24/7 instead of smoking - at least make it a toothpick ;p, turning a whale into an iceberg - wtf). In addition to the wonderful edits, you have some pretty poor dubbing (could Sanji's voice be any worse?), and lots of episode splicing + skipping, i.e., skip entire arcs or splice 5 episodes into 1. If god forbid they ever make it to the Water 7/Eneias Lobby arc how is Usopp going to convince the giants to rebel against the government when 4Kids skipped the Little Garden arc - "Hi, I am the King of Snipers - follow me or my 1000 followers will banish you to the Shadow Realm!" Sigh, One Piece just never had a chance once 4Kids got a hold of it, and now it looks uncut One Piece will never be released in the US . /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif
