View Full Version : Should Chuplayer start reading the Akira manga?

I'm feeling a little CLAMPed out right about now, and I've got a Borders 20% off coupon, and I saw Akira at Borders and at the comic book store, and I just thought what the hell.
If I get Akira, I'm going to get the big six books from Dark Horse. And I haven't watched the anime movie yet. I probably never will because I'm hardcore like that even though it's like, what, 10 bucks at Wal-Mart? I don't shop at Wal-Mart because I'm hardcore like that.
So vote. Yes or no. No bullshit in this thread. No anime movie discussion either. I'm hardcore like that. This is a strict manga yes or no. At least until I get volume 1 or I decide not to get the manga at all. Then all bets are off.

Really? Heh. Believe it or not, I've only seen the spines. I haven't actually picked up the book and looked at the cover.
Well, I don't think being flipped would be that big of a turn-off. It's not authentic and all that, but it's not unreadable, right?

This may seem weird, but I would have initially considered that an asinine reason, however, I did notice in your original post that you refer to yourself as hardcore, so I could actually see it as a valid reason...

If you don't mind that, then you should go for it. It's a good manga, and the rest of the presentation is handled very well, as I remember.
I do think that at some point, being a well known title, that it will get an unflipped release, but then it may not be at the same size. So if being flipped wouldn't really affect your enjoyment in a negative manner, I say go for it.
edit: I can spell!

Yeah, well, I'm hardcore like that. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif But as a rule, I am a generally asinine person.

I've been hoping for a while now that Dark Horse would re-release this and Appleseed unflipped.
I thought that they'd do a re-release of Appleseed around when the movie came out like how they re-released GITS when Stand Alone Complex came out but no dice.

Clamp and hardcore? LOL.
But yeah dont let it being flip turn you away from the a great manga. I've read Akira and it never bother me in any way. It would be nice if it was unflipped, but it doesn't hinder my enjoyment of it. The same with Lone Wolf and Cub and Blade of the Immortal.

Despite it being flipped, the presentation of the Akira manga is wonderful. It includes color pages and the art is presented in the original size that it was published.
Akira is an epic manga series that everyone should read.

The flipping didn't bother me -too- much (though there were a few times...), but the thing that really got me were the translations of the sound effects. Hilarious stuff. Whoever did that part of the thing really went all out, and came up with some of the funniest damn sound-effects since the old live-action Batman TV show. Hell, I'd say its worth it just for that /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

It's not the companies, but the manga you're promoting! Think of the original work, man, the WORK! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
(ps: you know you love it, and we love you for it!)

*notices Media Blasters*
Wow. Didn't expect to see something like that. That's cool. Hey, I've got a wonky disc in that newer Magic Knight Rayearth 2 box set. Any way I can get that fixed? I tried going to the Media Blasters website, but it's down, and has been down. Thanks in advance. I love, love, love the new MKR boxsets!
As for everybody else, thanks for your input. I still haven't decided, but it's looking like I'll be getting volume 1 tomorrow. Keep those votes and suggestions coming!

That's what I'm thinking, it won't hinder the enjoyment of it. I've read loads of American comics, and I can't see the flipped experience being any different from, say, Ultimate Spider-Man.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll probably not get Akira so soon, but I'll definitely get it somewhere down the line.
And thank you Franky. I'll send an email in a few days. I have to find that disc and watch it again so I can tell you exactly what's wrong with it.
