Kindaichi Case Files #12: Playing the Fool

After a long LONG wait, I managed to get the latest volume of Kindaichi Case Files. And wow...this must be the thickest manga volume for any manga in English ever for less than $10. Another reason why more people should read this excellent manga.

It was nice that this manga brought back characters from earlier volumes. I did have to however reread vol. 1 and 3 since my memory was blurry on how the doctor and Reika were. One thing though - in my copy, in the 1st chapter when Reika is taking a bath, there's an awful lot of steam that blurs the "details". /images/graemlins/anger200.gif /images/graemlins/anger100.gif Is it just my manga or was this in the original version (I hope this is not edited but I don't see Tokyopop doing this though).

This was a nice story and I hope some of the characters here <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>especially Reika </span> will return. I however still think nothing can top the disturbingness of vol. 2 and I hope we will get a disturbing case soon. Oh and it was odd for a change how the volume starts off by showing the actual 1st murder being committed.

Heh...it's definitely not edited in any way, so no worries there...

It certainly is interesting in that it shows the quite recognizable killer doing the deed...of course, it's more complicated than that, or it wouldn't be a mystery!

I picked up my copy of Kindaichi last week at my comic book store. Unfortunately it was a very big week and I had to make a gutwenching decision at the register in front of my good friend, whom I share all my manga with.

Well, first I really thought I was going to be able to pick up everything I wanted, but the total at the register came to over $45 and I have a very strict weekly budget to never go over $40. I had to put one manga back, but which.....
Cantarella or Kindaichi?

Cantarella is SWEET! Kudos to Mr Forbes for bringing a manga to the market perfectly. The cover jumps out at the reader, exactly like the first manga I picked up over 20 years ago. The book feels delicious. The pages flipped effortlessly and looked crisp at the glance. I could have gobbled it up right there, if I did not dislike mangled shelf copies.

In my other hand is Kindaichi, a complete mystery and a very BIG one at that. I can feel my friend's eyes booring into me as I accually ponder this decision. Mind you she does not read my Kindaichi and I had already cleaned up our drool when we glance through Cantarella. So I took a closer look at Kindaichi and suddenly my decision was made and I asked the cashier to please return Cantarella to my box. Oh, and did I mention, I forgot my checkbook and my friend paid for my purchases. What made me change my mind?

Was it the tarot theme, cause I'm a tarot freak. No.
Was it cause of the complete story. Maybe.
Or was it the two girls fighting over K under the Table of Contents. YES, that pic sealed the deal for me and I am so glad.

Kindaichi: Playing the Fool is one of the best action-murder mysteries available in GN format, up there with Watchmen and A History of Violence. This mystery had balance, not too many characters, just enough murder and a little romance. I just hope TOKYOPOP will continue this series.

It was quite thick, wasn't it. I had to move two other volumes of manga down on my shelf to fit this one in with the rest of the series.

This case was a good one, I'm I'm glad that Tokyopop decided to include some of the bonus stuff that they've neglected in previous volumes. I should start doing comparisons again...
