Doki Doki School Hours, dubbed by Blue Water Studios in Calgary, ADR direction by Teri Snelgove, has a dub that is, in my opinion, sadly mediocre. There were no truly convincing performances, nothing that drew me in, nothing that stood apart as excellent. It was a rather depressing experience overall.

This will be the first hybrid anime series that I end up watching Japanese-only since Banner of the Stars II ended.

Hmmm, that makes me sad. Netflix still isn't listing this that I can see, so it'll be a while before I get to check it out for myself.

Well this just blows. I just received this in the mail today too. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif

I always wondered how Geneon decides who they are going to use to dub what. Spin a wheel? Maybe they let studios bid on them like contractors.

I watched the dub of Doki Doki School Hours last Friday when I received Vol. 1 + Box from Right Stuf and to be honest I have to say that I completely agree with you. For me, I found the dub to be extremely bland and uninspiring. This is most definately not one of Geneon's best.

Well, there is a handfull of forum posters whose opinions I take pretty seriously. Yours is one of them. But don't worry, I'm still gonna soldier through the Doki dub, just as I did for Crest/Banner and Gunparade. Hopefully I will find something I like about it, somewhere. I'll report back about it next week. To be honest, I can't remember the last time I watched an entire episode of any show in Japanese. Just don't have the time these days. Oh well.

This stinks, I was looking forward to this show quite a bit and was interested to see how they would tackle it in English. Well, it won't hurt to try one ep in English when I rent it.

Too bad Doki Doki received a poor dub; I would like to have seen it go to either New Gen or Media Concepts. This won't stop me from buying the show though since I loved it on fansubs . Should be getting it today which means I'll be watching it tonight.

Luckily the Japanese version is very enjoyable, with Minami Omi in the lead and such great seiyuu as Ikue Ohtani, Yuji Ueda, and Mitsuo Iwata in the cast.

Don't forget Kappei Yamaguchi who's delightfully dim as Suetake.

Well I have finally sat down and watched the first episode of Doki Doki School Hours. I didn't really think it was all that bad. If anything it was just kinda... Blah imo. Some of the characters seemed to fit right with the voices but some not so much. Being a Blue Water dub I only recognized two names, Mariette Sluyter and Carol Ann Day. The only reason I recognized the name Carol Ann Day is because she was in the last VA draft (Vicious I think). After I settled into a good chunk of the episode I started to like the voice and acting for the main character Mika Sensei (wish they would have just called her Miss Mika instead though). She kinda reminded me of Hunter Austin. Some of the students were rather lackluster to me. I did enjoy the one girl who seemed like she was Tomo and Yomi's lovechild. Hopefully it will improve with the later disks.

Its good that I finally know where that avatar of the girl holding the huge knife Psychoidiot used to use came from. /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif

Heh I remember that avatar. Heh I was the one who made it. That scene is the first moment I realized how divine Tominaga was. In any case I'm not sure when I'll be collecting this, but I'll probably at least check out the first episode whenever I get around to it. Then decide from there.

So I finally watched this and I will have to disagree with your opinion on the english-dubs on this series.

The english-vocals ain't spectacular like Champloo's or Galaxy Angel's, but it's all good enough for a brainless anime series. It's not offensive like some other english-dubs I know. Kobayashi and Nakamura were funnier in english.

The english-dubbed version actually rather fit and translate the characters well. Even Mika. Nobody's over-acting or even trying to forcibly sound cute nor were they even sounding generic like the japanese-version. Everyone's just having fun and being cynically sarcastic, e.g. their cheer

way to go. way to go. yay 2A.

was just stupidly funny. lol!

Angie Beers' depiction of Mika is definitely totally different than the generic loli-vocal of Omi Minami, but it's much more tolerable and rather pleasing to me as I don't have any fascination of the generic loli-vocals that pretty much dominated the japanese version.

That's it.
