Just started watching the original Saiyuki series; i love it, the characters are so damn cool. one of the things I really like are the VA's in the show, so I am sort of worried that when I get round to buying Reload, Geneons dub might not be as good.

Can anyone offer up any light on the situation?

Also, have Genoen licensed Gunlock?

Frankly, the dub is not anywhere as good as the ADV dub, mostly because they tried to mimic the ADV dub as closely as possible and failed. It's improved quite a bit on the recent discs, as the actors have made the characters more theirs and mimiced the delivery of the ADV actors less.

That being said, Saiyuki Reload is nowhere near as good as the original series. Some of the episodes have been pretty painfully bad.

Shouldn't this question have been in the English Track forum?

And to add insult to injury for all, I remember at Otakon where someone asked if Geneon would use the same VAs as ADV for their Saiyuki. They of course said "we'll look into it." If I'm not mistaken, ADV, at the same Otakon, revealed that Geneon had already begun production work prior to Otakon and that they didn't even both going to ADV's VAs. It's too bad ADV's panel was before Geneon's that would have made for some fun drama to watch!

In Japan the productions have the benefit of being controlled by a single entity (for the most part), whereas in R1 land, as proven with Saiyuki and A!MG, when more than one company gets their hand in the pie, all sorts of things can, and will, be changed.

Actually, I think with Saiyuki the problem was that two different Japanese companies produced the two (three?) TV series, which is why ADV got one, and Geneon the other.

I think the real culprit here is that little known company (ha ha ha) Dentsu. They and Studio Pierot are listed as the Production companies for all of the Saiyuki series.

Remember Geneon (or rather Pioneer'a Anime dept at the time) got bought by Dentsu? My guess is that this was a natural progression for them. Why license it to ADV when you can just keep it in your own company and pull in the profit for it? ADV obviously didn't license it all at the same time, likely to check to make sure it was marketable, and because of that Dentsu kept it.

Well, getting back to the thread topic.... Compared to the ADV dub i can't stand to listen to Reload's dub. Maybe if i had never of seen any of Saiyuki i wouldn't be as critical. But since I have, lets just say i really like all the VA's involved in dubbing(in other anime they have dubbed) Reload, but damn its god awful. Do yourself a favor just watch it in japanese or read the manga.
