If that info's correct, isn't the DH book short by about 80 pages? The Japanese A!MG Complete v1 has about (flips to the back) 276 numbered pages.

Also, does the latest DH O!MG book (#22? whatever volume) have color pages? If not, maybe there'll be a reprint when the Japanese A!MG Complete books get up there and add the color? Since I haven't been tracking the Japanese tankouban release, I don't know which books have color, and which don't...

Isn't the Complete a wideban style release? I don't recall anything claiming that the current DH releases will be paralleling the wideban, or Complete.

The original OMG Japanese trades that I used to have are parallel to the DH in size (about 200 for the first couple of volumes.

A!MG Complete does have a higher page-count than the original release (which probably had the usual 180-200 pages). I was just thinking that calling the DH release 'O!MG Complete' is a bit strange when it's not the equivalent of the Japanese 'Complete' volumes.

Nothing that DH has said has indicated that they were doing anything other than paralleling the original Japanese volumes, but throwing in the color artwork.

I suppose that I'm just practicing picking nits. Hmm... Since DH is calling it 'Complete', does that mean that we'll see the three Goddess figures that the Japanese release first came with? Yeah, I know the answer is 'no'. ^_^;;

But they're not calling it "complete". It's called " Oh My Goddess! Volume 1" The cover is just the Japanese cover and not the final cover. Note lack of English Oh My Goddess on it and Japanese product code on the upper right. Contrast with the other OMG volume they released in the unflipped format. Volume 21 (http://www.darkhorse.com/profile/profile.php?sku=10-483) note actual title is in English and no Japanese product code.

Someone just needed a quick cover image for the website pulled the Japanese Complete cover 1 and slapped an overlay with DH copyright at the bottom.

See Japanese cover for complete here (http://www.animaxis.com/en/shop/product.asp?pf%5Fid=133067&sku=133067%2D00).

As several people have pointed out, the preview cover is in fact that of Kodansha's Aa Megamisama Complete Vol. 1. The new DH OMG Vol. 1 does use this same cover artwork, but with a layout similar to the recent Vol. 21. We'll put the actual cover up soon.

To clear things up: think of Dark Horse's new unflopped OMG! Vol. 1 as the covers and interior pages 1-180 of Complete Vol. 1 (plus original DH liner notes). The source files of the DH book are literally from Complete; they were chosen because they represent the "remastered" version of these pages.

For example, if we had simply asked for the regular Kodansha tankobon Vol. 1 files, we wouldn't have been able to get the color versions of p. 131-134 (only Complete reprinted these in color), and DH wanted to print all interior color pages in color. So in the new DH Vol. 1 this includes p. 1 (Fujishima's original 1989 cover) as well as manga pages 3-6 and 131-134.

Vol. 2 will have the same approach, using the Urd cover from Complete Vol. 2 and interiors from the last part of Complete Vol. 1 and the first part of Complete Vol. 2 (i.e., the equivalent pages of Kodansha regular tankobon Vol. 2).

It's kind of a balancing act. As long as these nice new covers are available from Fujishima-san, I feel it's a shame not to use them. But this won't work for Vol. 3, as, although Skuld is in (and on the cover of) Complete Vol. 3, she doesn't show up until regular tankobon Vol. 5 (because Complete has a larger page count, of course). So with Vol. 3 we are likely to use the regular Vol. 3 tankobon cover, although we might use Complete 3's cover for Vol. 5.

But why not simply make the new Vol. 1 the page count of Complete, then? The reason is that the original tankobon series is still ongoing in Japan; DH's Vols. 21, 22, 23, etc., are synched to it. So the decision was made to also have the early volumes match the page count of the original tankobon series, even if it uses the Complete version of these files. Also, of course, we would like reasonably consistent pricing--if the new OMG Vol. 1 were 276 pages as is Complete, we'd have to charge much more than for Vol. 21 (which is 166 pgs., same as the Japanese Vol. 21).

It's also important to note that OMG Vol. 1 contains the same paper stock as the recent Vol. 21, so the color pages are likely to have a somewhat softened appearance.

I hope this isn't too convoluted, so please let me know if you have any additional questions. There is inevitable confusion in re-releasing a series in a different format (as you know, the original flopped DH OMG! books were broken up by story arc) and using the Complete files risks creating a little more, but I wanted to explain the reasoning. OMG! is the second-oldest continuing manga series in the U.S., and we not only appreciate its readership remaining with us through this switch, but we're hoping that OMG! Vol. 1 will attract new readers to discover this classic story.

—C.

P.S. Don't forget to send in your fan art and letters to "Letters To The Enchantress," 10956 SE Main Street, Milwaukie, OR 97222, or via e-mail to omg@darkhorse.com. Vol. 21 and Vol. 22 both continue the letters column from the traditional monthly series, and we're hoping to print letters from readers of OMG! Vol. 1, too.

Interior color pages? I was on the fence before, but I'm sold now. I guess I love OMG enough to buy the first volume for the third time. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Also, I really like the fact that you're including the original cover as an interior color page since you're using the new Complete illustration as the cover.

That seems a little confusing, but so long as you do the same thing for volume 2, 5, etc. that you did for 1 by including the original cover as an interior page, I think most folks can't complain. I certainly won't.

<sigh> I should have noticed... I guess that I was just too distracted by the pretty cover art to catch the text on the cover. ^_^;

Probably could have snipped a bit more, but I didn't want to get to gung-ho with the virtual scissors... ^_^;

Will/Do the DH printings of the later volumes (21+) have any color inside? If not, will they get reprinted with color, once the A!MG Complete books that cover those volumes get released in Japan?

I'll be getting v1 when I happen to see it. ^_^

As Homer would say, "In theory, yes"—however, I'm not sure how much color actually is in the "modern" OMG! It seems to be a phenomenon mainly of the early volumes in the series. I'm not sure if there are any color pages in Vols. 22 through 31, for example.

I think there was one color page in the recent volume (21 or 22?) but DH didn't include it...I was sad....(it was the first page in the book)

Oops...I think I meant the pics are missing from the inside of the dust jacket (of the Japanese version), cause there aren't really any color pages in vol.21...I know English manga companies don't usually include these pics, but it would have been nice /images/graemlins/sad.gif

It's possible they were on a different printing, but my copies of the Japanese vols. 21 and 22 don't have any pictures on the inside of the dust jacket. Or did you mean the little chara pics on the cover flaps (Bell and Hild on Vol. 21, Skuld and Mara on Vol. 22)? It's true that we usually can't give them all a "place," at least in color. There's the back cover, but generally speaking there's only room for one illo.

It's unusual, but sometimes there actually is a "secret message" on the inside of a manga dust jacket. HEARTBROKEN ANGELS has a whole secret manga on the back of its jacket.

Yeah, I meant the little pics of Bell and Hild...Is there a chance that these pics (and others missing from future volumes) will ever be collected in an artbook or something?
