View Full Version : Any thoughts on the IGPX dub?

I just watched this show and I've got to say its got a very nice and interesting dub. Its a Bang Zoom dub and has a real ecclectic cast. A mix of screen actors (Haley Joel Osment, Michelle Rodriguez, Lance Hendriksen, Mark Hammill), cartoon VAs (Tom Kenny, Hynden Walch) and veteren Anime VAs (Kari Wahlgren, Kirk Thornton, Wendee Lee, Steve Blum, Steve Staley, Julie Maddalena, Dave Wittenberg, Cripin Freeman, Karen Strassman, Kate Higgins, Michelle Ruff). And it is directed by Eric Sherman. Man what a dream team. Michelle Rodriguez really stood out for me. I always assumed she was a one note actor (though I never saw that indie movie Girlfight, the one she got famous for). Always playing the same character. Too my surprise she was quite good as Liz. Tough but not over the top, right amount of humor. So anyone else have any thoughts?

edit- I guess I don't know what a search is, because if I did I would have known there was a IGPX thread in GA, but since I specifically mentioned the dub maybe the mods will let it stay?
... wow, I need to watch this >_>

It is an excellent dub, quite possibly the best I've heard from Bang Zoom in ages. The most likely reason for this is the involvement of the Toonami execs Sean Akins and Jason DeMarco, who not only serve as producers but also have a major hand in the script. The script is liberally adapted and adds a lot of dub humor to the show. The show flows a lot more smoothly as a result. The VAs sound very natural and seem very comfortable in their roles. Were that more Bang Zoom dubs could sound this good.
I was particularly impressed with Haley Joel Osment and Michelle Rodriguez. They were the wild cards, and I wasn't sure how good they would sound. But it turns out they gave the best performances in the show. It's all the more impressive for me because I've seen the Japanese version, and the Japanese VAs for those roles stink.
(And I'm sorry, but I had to do a double take at seeing you list Mark Hammill as a screen actor, as if casting him was as much of a gamble as casting Osment and Rodriguez.)

Julie Maddalena is in it? Awesome, so she is still around... Haven't caught any episodes of this series yet.

So I keep hearing. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif
Well no matter how many VA roles he does I will always think Star Wars first when I think Mark Hammill. /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif

AS far as i know the only other VA role he's known for is the Joker. But he's done that role across multiple Batman series. I'm sure he's done others, but the Joker is the one he's best known for.

I haven't heard anything from her since Tenchi in Tokyo. Was she ill or something?

Extremely interesting cast. I'm a bit surprised to see Lance Henrikson ("Bishop" in Aliens) and Haley Joel Osmond in the dub. With that cast, I hope we can see more future dubs with that mixture.

I heard (only recently) that she had retired. I think the latest thing I've heard her in was in Tenchi Muyo GXP (in which she voiced no major characters, but two recognizable parts, Seina's mother and the Renza Hakuren (one of Seto's servants)).

According to the commentary track on Gundam F91, she had recently had a child and was dropping out of the VA business.
Apparently, she's feeling up to it again.
