The hotel costs are the only thing that are keeping me from making it a definite for a con in 2006. I think I may talk to Anime Boston over the weekend at Anime USA 2005.

I almost fainted when I saw Steve Blum. Holy crap, I cannot believe this is happening.

And my friend flipped when he saw that Richard Epcar played Batou and Bobobo.

Second time going, and it's gonna be better than the first.

At Melissa Fahn's panel this year, one guy told her that he heard Steve Blum did a convention once and vowed never to do another after one guy in attendance was a jerk to him. He wanted Melissa to tell him that the people at Anime Boston were really friendly and wouldn't treat him that way. Melissa mentioned that he knew Steve Blum a long time and was in some acting group with him and would definitely tell him.

I like to think Melissa came through for us. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Well...despite what I previously said.......I guess I'll be attending again this year.

My hotel reservation has been made for 2 nights (26th-28th).

Even with the higher rate at the Sheraton Boston of $175 per night....I was able to fit it into my budget thanks to very cheap RT airfare of $98.90 on Delta Connection from JFK-BOS.

At the very least....AB 2006's hotel and transportation costs will probably end up costing me about 1/2 of what attending AB 2005 cost. /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif

Are there any affordable hotels near some Mass Transit in Boston area? I want to go to AB, but the hotel rooms are insane for AB. $179 a night rooms means I have to spend the night with 4-6 people in a room to make it decently affordable.

[/ QUOTE ]

"Affordable Boston hotels" is something of an oxymoron.....especially during a this particular weekend in May.

Note: I can't help but go on the record that having it April again would have worked soooooo much better for me since I'll very likely be going to Boston at some point during that month anyway /images/graemlins/sad.gif ).

Anyway, your best bet for a cheaper hotel would probably be to check www.hotels.com (http://www.hotels.com) for one that is a bit outside of downtown (possibly one near Logan International Airport)....but then you'd have a 20-45 minute commute each way. And even in such a location, any hotel will still probably end up costing more than $100 per night.

Then again....you could always take a chance with Priceline. /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif

If it wasn't for the fact that I was able to get a very cheap early Friday Morning flight (7:15am) from NYC and as such, only have to stay 2 nights.....I wouldn't have even considered AB for 2006.

That's because I consider Otakon, AX, and possibly even Kawaii Kon to have priority....with Katsucon and Sakura-con being possibles....depending on a number of mitigating factors. /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif

I did the exact same thing for all three days last time. Boston's but a half hour's drive away, but you know big city traffic (and parking, ergh). The train rides themselves took just less than an hour. But what I realized is that the train's last depature times on the weekend is 11:30PM, so there was no way I could have stayed for the AoD get-together (quite the downer, after talking up a storm about it).

Perhaps 2006, I'll drive afterall. By train or by car, my wallet will be dented regardless. That way, at the very least, I can stay for the after party. First round (for myself only)'s on me!

I'm planning on making a panel at AB'06 dealing with how to become a freelancer/writer for various types of anime/manga/game publications. So if anyone can give me some tips, or know some writers or people in the industry (I will be asking the editors at Anime Insider if they will be available, and sharing my experiences) please PM me or give me an email. Thanks!

Shit, the Sheraton is out of rooms with double beds.

Why in the heck must my group insist on getting an expensive hotel room which we'll only be using to sleep in and nothing else? Last year we stayed at the nearby Boston Hostel and saved a lot of money. The only perks that a hotel room offers are a TV (so we can play XBox/PS2/Gamecube and watch anime) and bathrooms that are in the room and not down the hall, but not even this is worth spending the extra money, especially since we'll hardly ever use the room(s). Granted, most of it is the club's money that was donated or given to us by the college, but still. Whatever, I'm going with the majority, but it's still stupid.

EDIT: After much deliberation, we've decided to go with the hostel. Well, most of us, that is. There's no point in spending almost $200 a night for some room we'll be in only to sleep and nothing else.

Been there, done that... AnimeFest 2004 (http://www.anime-cons.com/events/info.shtml/494) says hello. Not only that, but AFest brought in less than 3,000 people hence dub fans had no problem at all getting a chance to interact with everyone. Whereas Anime Boston will easily triple that number and could potentially hit five-figures. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

Granted, AB's got a pretty stellar lineup of talent assembled here. And if my Bruins squeeze themselves into the NHL playoff picture, I may just make a point of hitting my third Anime Boston con in 4 years.

Greetings and felicitations. My friend and I have a hotel room at the Sheraton Boston for both Friday and Saturday nights, and are looking for people with who to share it and its cost. The room is a two bed double ($196.79/night total, including tax, to be divided among the occupants); we are two (possibly three, at this point) males in our thirties. We would prefer quiet, mature non-smokers of any gender or age who can pay cash, and don't mind sleeping on the floor; sleeping hours are also of no particular importance--we are both up late, and do not intend to sleep much, though on the other hand we do not have any parties planned.

Please contact me via E-mail (especially if you used to work the night shift at RCN -_^ ), and we can work out the details.

This will be my first Anime Boston, and I'm really looking forward to it. I've heard a lot of great things about this con, and I'm sure I'll have a blast.

I've met Greg twice before AB, so it'll be fun to talk with him again. I've met Epcar once before, and this time, rather than talking about his huge list of anime titles, I want to ask him about his video game work. (He's currently in Kingdom Hearts II). I met Vic Mignona last September at AWA, and he is honestly the nicest man I've ever met. He will take the time to talk to everyone. He's really a great person. I hope he shows "Full Metal Fantasy." It's a live-action version of FMA. It's AWESOME.

As a fan of Witch Hunter Robin, I'm looking forward to speaking with Kari Wahlgren. (She was also in Wolf's Rain.)

Overall, I think it'll be a great experience. If anyone is interested in saying hi, I'll be there from Thursday - Monday. (Thursday night --- GO SOX!!!)

Talk to you later.

Don't the Red Sox play next weekend? If so, serves my club advisor right. We had to pay WAAAY too much money for him to go (I'm gonna have a word with the school after this trip about their fucked-up policy about taking advisors on trips and making us pay for them) and now he's gonna have to attempt to drive through the mess. The guy's not even gonna attend the con (he knows nothing about anime), meaning we're paying for his vacation. Yeah, thanks a lot, Student Activities. You'll be hearing from me in August.

All I know is, if he tries to pull some shit like calling me on my cell phone (because he'll probably want our numbers to keep an eye on us even though we're in fucking college and he has no reason to call us) at 9 on Saturday night and saying, "Okay, time to go back to the hotel and get some rest," I'll be like "UP YOURS." I'm not spendiing almost $200 for my attendance and this guy's travel fees so he can tell me what to do.

And with me on staff this year, I probably won't be free to go to a get together if one gets put together.

The schedule has been posted and the AnimeOnDVD.com Panel is scheduled for 5:30pm Saturday in Panel A (Hynes 3rd Floor).

Since the AoD panel is at 530 on Saturday, why not have a get together and early dinner right after the ADV panel at 2:30? It gives us plenty of time to act stupid, get some food down and to get to know each other. =)

Well, I could do the 2:30, I'd just want to head back early to catch the Bad Luck autographs at 4 PM.

Yeah, I could do the 2:30 since there's nothing else interesting to me going on at that time.

Also, I see they're pairing up voice actors this year. Now I can kill two birds with one stone by seeing both Steve Blum and Vic at the same time. And it's pretty obvious they'd pair up Mary Elizabeth and Richard Epcar. That whole panel will no doubt revolve around Kusanagi, Batou and Robotech. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

And for some reason, I keep forgetting that Greg's coming back. Sorry, Chrono, you little sinner. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

if you like greek food, I suggest taking a walk over to steves on newbury st :D

otherwise, there's the usual chain suspects in the area like CPK, cheesecake factory, and applebees.

Anyway, last year I couldn't make it to the AoD bash, 'cause the last train out was at midnight. I can manage to have a drink with you fellas this year, if it's early. However, if I miss my chance to meet Kari Wahlgren, I'll annihilate you all...

I like Chinese and (of course) Japanese, though Greek would be okay.

This is getting pretty close to the wire, especially given the fact that I will be without Internet access at the con. Suggestion: in the event that no decision is made by tomorrow morning, we should meet at the Lounge at 2:30pm Saturday to decide.

Honestly, I felt this was a very enertaining convention - possibly the most enertaining of the year so far, right up there with SakuraCon. The guests were quite nice and the dance - while stinky, had a great mix of music. The biggest highlight was the attendees. =)

The only things I think really needed to get worked on for next year is the schedule - from higher profile canceled panels (industry) to there not being any transition time between panels, it felt like things were always running late. Add in alot of late Sunday programming and you got my beefs.

Overall, I think AB has my vote for next year unless something huge stops me.

Fire alarm going off at 8 am on Saturday and having to evacuate the floor. More fun when you lsoe your key and have to wait outisde in your pajamas for Security Not getting a corect scheduel for Saturday on Friday. Not a big deal for me but a little anoyign since i couldn't plan out the whole weekend. Several things got changed. One thing that anoyed me was Richard Epcar's Lupin Outtakes was moved to Ballroom A and when i get in line i find out that it's the line for the Hentai Dubbing. But i cstayed there because it sounded more fun than the other thing but it still was differnet than what i was told I wasn't able to get an autograph on Saturdya becasue the overflow was only for people with a red ticket who were in Friday's autogrpah line. High:
* Haibane-Renmei showing(Eps 1&4)& discussion with Johnathan Klein & Carrie Savage
* Princess Tutu AMV winning Best Action & Best of Show(which has led me to actually want to see this show)
* Most panels where in Ballroom A (muuuuch more room)
* FUNImation panel. They announced Beck and they gave us all AnimeBoston LE Beck "Backstage Passes" (which are numbered. 300 total)

Lows:
* Although I thought Kaiju Big Battel was awesome, I just couldn't stick around because the mic volume was way too loud and it was hurting my ears.
* Not as many vendors/merch selections as last year.
* It was way expensive to go to this convention. (hotel costs in particular). I doubt I'll make it next year.

Other: CPM Panel. I wasn't sure where to put this. But it was quite bittersweet. The rep had only been told he got fired the day before(fri). But since he was there already he pretty much showed up to announce the bankruptsy and that he was fired and to give away all the dvds and t-shirts he had. The guy was choking back tears the whole time even.

So while the whole convention was quite good, I'll be suprised if I make it next year due to the expense of going.

Next stop for me: PortConMaine

-Bumped into Mary McGlynn in the hall. I was wearing my "Ghost In the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" shirt and she said, "Nice shirt!"
-Brought a digital camera and got a ton of pictures.
-Saw the first two episodes of "Speed Grapher."

Lows:

-Because I was staying with my brother in Somerville and having to catch the T before it shut down, I had to miss some of the late night events I wanted to attend. Like "Whose Line Is It Anime" and the Lupin outtakes.
-After standing in line for Kari Walgren's autograph for almost two hours, they cut off the autograph line and I wasn't able to get one. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif

I forgot to turn on red eye reduction).

Overall it was a good con, even if I spent most of my time in numerous lines. Chris Bevins and Clarine Harp were real cool, Richard Epcar and mary Elizabeth McGlynn were damn funny, Greg was the man, finally met the JK, and Carrie Savage was a complete sweetie! Highs:

1) Location, location, location! Best location EVER for an anime convention. It's like those credit card commercials:
"Hotel, $600. Parking $114. Gas $90. Having your hotel just two steps away from the convention center AND a Catholic church, all connected indoors: PRICELESS!!!!"

2) Being there for the BECK announcement! Going home with the cool promotional BECK backstage pass! YAYYYYYY!!!!! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

3) The AOD panel. The industry panels. (I'm dying to know what David Williams was going to say about fansubs at the state of the industry panel, but everyone had already agreed not to discuss it before he got there and they wouldn't let him get into it.)

4) Finding Kyo Kara Maoh stuff in the dealers room. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif I never even knew they'd made any KKM merchandise.

5) The feel of the whole event. Even tho there were like 9,000 people, it never felt crowded, it never felt stressful, no one was pushing or shoving, everything was so laid back. Even the staff was low-key. As lines were filing into panels, the staff at the doors just held up their badges as an indication that the attendees should do the same. At other cons, staff is always shouting instructions like "show your badge" until you are just tired of hearing them, which just adds to your stress level. It was actually kind of amazing how relaxed everything was.

Lows:

1) Panicking the whole 7.5 hour drive from NJ because I'd just read on the AB Forum that if you didn't show up by 8 pm Friday night to claim your pre-reg badge, you couldn't go to ANY Friday night events. I made it by 6:30, but the Memorial Day traffic (yes, I did sit in traffic for over an hour) could have easily caused a big disaster to my weekend. I'm not sure where this policy came from, but, geez, if you've paid and the event is still going on, you're definitely entitled to get in.

2) Being told they were all out of schedules when I arrived Friday. Between that and the panic over registration closing time, I was initially forming a very low opinion of this convention. Fortunately, it didn't last.

3) Being there when they announced SpeedGrapher won't have the original opening theme. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif

4) Trying to buy a $9 manga at the table in the dealers room where the idiots kept yelling "20% off manga" and being told, "That'll be $8." I said, "That's not 20% off." She said, "Oh, we're not DOING change." I put it back and bought a $10 manga instead, which had the correct discount. Of course, the seller was cosplaying while working at the table and her gloves got all tangled up in the money and she gave me too many bills back out of my $20. I guess I was an idiot, too, cuz I gave her back the extra money.

5) Having too many things shown in English in the video rooms. The staff must be all dub fans.

It was also interesting to note there seemed to be more girls in attendance than any con I've been to. Also, more people in my age group (between 40 and death) than usual. The FuniGirls party was good silly fun, altho I hope the reps figure out how the Fruits Basket card game works before the next time because no one in my group was motivated to read and interpret the actual rules. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif

So join me in suggesting to AB that they let Mr. Williams and Mr. Greg Ayres (whom Mr. Williams mentioned in this regard) do a panel on fansubs. ^_^

Personally, I also liked the shoujo manga panel ("Shoujo Manga of the '50s and '60s"—actually 1954-63 IIRC), and I hope that the presenter, Nadia Mehady, is given a chance to do another panel next year.

Oh, and the "Asian Film Licensing" panel was also very informative. IMNSHO, the sole panelist should be given the opportunity to do it again next year, with an hour and a half slot (he ran over by at least 15 minutes), and one or more anime industy members to add perspective.

Hello! How often do people meet each other in person and then meet again online? Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? /images/graemlins/shy10000.gif
I hope your friend-pile managed to get some zzz's. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
We did all three days this year. Last year we did two. The year before that I think we could only do one. So, I guess our track-record suggests that we're spending more days at AnimeBoston with age. /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif Usually, my hubby covers E3, so our expenses seem to soar around this time of year. But it's still a lot of fun and we really enjoy it. One of these years we'll actually bring our kiddos along, too. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

I arrived very late to the FuniGirls party. (My poor hubby sat at the back of the room, as if we were infected with girlie cooties.) /images/graemlins/shy00000.gif And I'm one of the ancient ones, too, although I'm only 36. lol.
The Furuba card game was very cute and fun. I asked the FuniGirl rep where I could buy the game but she wasn't really sure. I checked the booth on Sunday but she'd already left for the airport. It wasn't available for sale at the con, either. No worries. I guess I'll find it online. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
Actually, I spent a good 30 minutes learning how to play the FMA card game at the Funimation booth. I ended up buying a couple of decks which my 10y.o. son loves. For what it's worth, the FMA tcg was much easier for me to play than my attempts at using the advanced Yu-Gi-Oh! tcg. And the FB tcg was far less complicated than both. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Oh! I think you were playing Rich Man Poor Man with us with the Furuba deck? I remember you joked that you were old and I was kicking myself later that I didn't ask how old. I'm even more ancient (45), but no one seemed to care....we were all just FuniGirls!

/images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif Yes, that was me. I thought it was a fun game, too. I still haven't picked it up yet, though. I checked a few local places but no joy. I think my 9y.o. daughter would really like it.
My 10y.o. son loves the FMA card game, though.

I was told by another forum member that Sumi Shimamoto (Japanese seiyuu) might be at Boston.

Was she there, & if so did anyone get to hear or speak to her? Or even an autograph?

(Sorry if its been mentioned, long thread)

Yes, Sumi Shimamoto did appear at Anime Boston along with character designer Shuzilow.HA. I went to her Satutday panel, and I asked her about her work in Meitantei Conan/Case Closed. She did not have too much to say about it other than to explain that she did play Kudo Shinichi's (Jimmy Kudo's) mother in the anime, and that at her current age, she loves being cast in motherly roles, and as she gets older, hopefully she will be cast in roles where she plays a grandmother.

She also clarified that when she said that she was a RPG fan, she actually meant to say that she is a big fan of the Final Fantasy games.

Both Sumi Shimamoto and Shulizow.HA promoted the anime Solty Rei, on which they both worked. Shulizow.HA is the main character designer for Solty Rei, and Sumi Shimamoto voices the lead role. They passed out ads advertising the R2 release of vol. 1 of the anime on the Japanese market.

I bought a copy of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind for the convention, and had it autographed by Sumi Shimamoto herself.

What???

You brought Nausicaa, but you didn't bring your Maison Ikkoku copy to get autographed by TEH Kyoko Otonashi herself?!!

What were you thinking!!! /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I don't have Maison Ikkoku in my personal anime collection (my personal collection is quite limited compared to the collections of other AOD readers), but I can't deny that Maison Ikkoku is a good classic series. BTW, who said or implied that I had Maison Ikkoku in my personal anime collection? If I had Maison Ikkoku in my collection, I would have had it autographed. I would not be surprised if someone brought his or her Maison Ikkoku anime DVDs to have them autographed, but if it happened, I don't recall witnessing it.
