View Full Version : Howl's Moving Castle

Howl's Moving Castle is out on DVD today here in Japan. Rushed to Yodobashi and grabbed a copy along with the Ghibli Short Short DVD. To my surpise I got the limited 1/24 second movie frame trinket. The usual table of Anime DVDs was covered with only Ghibli stuff and they just had large boxes full of Howl behind the counter. About half the poeple line was there just to buy it.

This is my first opportunity to see the film, as I was in all the wrong parts of the world for the theatrical releases.

The short collection has no english subs but it does have an english dub for "On Your Mark".

Can you elaborate a bit more on the English dub for On Your Mark? I thought it's just a music video...

I'll get back to you after I watch it tonight, It seems strange to me too. The insert page that lists the technical specs for all the shorts has Japanese 5.1/Japanese 2.0/English 2.0 for Audio options for On your Mark. The booklet (which is quite extensive) calls the english 2.0 track "Castles in the Air"

Is On Your Mark anamorphic? I'd expect it to be, but you never know.

Yes it is. Actualy all of the non 4:3 stuff is anamorphic. which accounds for about half the content.

On Your Mark does indeed have an english version and japanese version. The english song does not seem to be a translation. It's very hard to tell if the songs themselves are the same regardless of language or not becauase the authoring does not allow on-the-fly switching, but they are very similar style-wise.

The english version is also missing japanese title frames and appears to be made specifically to be shown to an english audience.

The majority of the rest of the content of the DVD has almost no dialogue. The Portable Airport and Space Station series of short films pretty good too and are all music.

I always get the special item when I buy my Ghibli DVDs from Bic Camera, that's why I don't bother with preorder. From what I observed so far at Bic Camera, sometimes these special items are still available days or weeks after its release date. This is the benefit of living in Japan. I always smile when I read people in the forum worrying that they may not get the special item because they did not preorder earlier. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Don't know whether this is limited to Bic Camera only or not, if you buy Howl DVD, you can get 461 yen discount of a different Ghibli DVD plus a Howl's Castle mini figurine.

I saw this movie and I have without a doubt to say that this is the best Ghibli movie I have seen imho. I loved the story and more the character of Sophie.

Amazon has the various releases listed still:
Standard Edition (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000ARV0FW/) (if you are just getting the standard edition, I would wait for the Disney release.)

with 1/24 film (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00009B8MC/)
DTS (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000AOXE0Y/)
with Ghibli ga Ippai (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000AOXE18/)

You can also check out the CD Japan (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/anime/essentials/howl/index.html) page for more information on each release. All versions have english included.

Unless you need the movie now, it would be cheaper and more convenient to wait for the US release next Spring.

Forgive my ignorance but are all the English Ghibli dubs done by Buena Vista/Disney now? I'm not sure what the agreement is.

If so I'll probably just wait for the R1 release because I wouldn't be missing out on anything that way, unless there will be significant difference between the subtitles?

I don't know really, I don't buy releases directly from Japan that often. This does look interesting though how it has so many languages.. I take it that doesn't happen very often?

To find the cheapest price, just go to each site and set up a mock order and see what it comes up to. Remeber that the fastest shipping costs the most, though it will get items from Japan to North America in 2-3 days.

Yes, Disney has been doing Ghibli dubs for a few years at least. I'm not the dub expert, though I know there have been a few Ghibli dubs in the past done by other companies as well. Though it appears to be exclusively Disney's domain now.

Disney's release will probably have English subtitles, dubtitles and dub if that sort of thing matters to you. (The Japan release appears to have subtitles and dub only.)

As to the number of languages, it's typical for Ghibli titles to be dubbed in many languages for international releases. Though having all the dubs in one big release is quite uncommon. It is also uncommon for Region 2 DVDs releases in Japan for the Japanese market to have English subtitles, and very very rare for them to have an English dub.

Also, it's pretty normal for popular anime to be dubbed into English, French, Korean, German, Mandarin, and maybe other languages for releases in their respective markets.

Ah, thanks Iridium. I thought it looked a bit on the excessive side compared to a casual Region 2. I think I'll still wait for the Region 1 however, just on the less expense front alone, well unless my income increases spontaneously.

This is interesting though - I wonder if it's possible for more future Ghibli releases (on DVD) in Japan to come out in such a multilingual way.

My copy of the regular edition came from CD Japan today. I had ordered it pretty late, but I got a 1/24 second after all. It's from one of my favorite scenes, too (with Howl and his uber-fancy bedroom). Color me extremely pleased. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

I'd take a picture if I could, but I think I sort of lack the skills to get a good/clear shot. Oh well.

I just watched the movie today: I'd say the R2's presentation was excellent. I detected no faults, though my audio setup is only stereo. I still haven't gone through the extras disc yet though.

This was actually my first time watching the film, as I did not see it in theatres. As usual, Ghibli females all seem to look similar. The main character (in her young form) looked like a carbon copy of Taeko from Only Yesterday.

As to the content, it's a rare thing for my whole family to sit there for an entire two hour film. People usually wander off, but this time we were all there for the whole time. The content was engaging on a number of levels; While the story itself was full of fun, action and lots of character development, my dad was there drawing parallels between it and certain religious subjects. Miyazaki also stated that the film was profoundly affected by certain major political events that I won't mention here, so it was interesting looking at it from that angle as well. All in all, it was another case of Studio Ghibli doing what they do best and giving everyone an entertaining and very well animated ride.

Yeah, they certainly changed quite a bit from the book, but I'm glad to hear that it held up well as there were a few bits left in from the book that didn't really make a huge amount of sense as the context for them had gotten yanked.

Nausicaa.net (http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/newspro/latest_news.shtml#newsitemEEFkkEpyEkrPquGXQB) says that the second disc (with the 2.0 Japanese track) has subtitles. Have you checked it?

Btw for those interested, the MPEG-2 video on the DTS DVD is about 156 MB larger.

It is definintely subtitled as opposed to dubtitled.

We watched the R2 in English with the subs and the script differences were so annoyingly obvious that we turned the subs off. (There were even a few minor factual differences.)

There's a couple of places where the subs are a bit less literal than I would have chosen, but otherwise they were pretty good. They used the same translator as some of the other recent Ghibli releases (Linda Houglund), so if you've been happy with her other work there should be no cause for complaint.

Doesn't look like anything's listed. They've got it paired up withthe Intercontinental Video box of HK R3 Ghibli films, but that's pretty peripheral, as evidence goes. Also realized that the "cover" they have showing at this point is just the movie poster, not a picture of an actual cover. I assume they'll be putting up more information in the next couple weeks.

And just to follow up on this, if you do want to trade items, you might want to try animeka.net (http://www.animeka.net/). Thanks!

I see. Here's just the photo (http://www.smallapple.net/for_sale/pics/howl_moving_castle_1_24_film-tn.jpg) of it then.

Here's a closer look (http://www.smallapple.net/for_sale/pics/howl_moving_castle_1_24_film.jpg). If you see hot link denied (and you most probably will), refresh the page one more time to see the image.

It's a pleasant surprise to get this because by the time I ordered, CD Japan already indicated the 1/24 film first printing were sold out.

Well, it's not the best shot in the world, but i was running out of battery and thus didn't have a lot of opportunity to experiment. I still think I'd like to go back again and try it with different backgrounds etc. I'd like to have a nice shot of my film piece. But for now, I guess this will have to do (http://img454.imageshack.us/img454/6281/hmc4lv.jpg).

Not as good as the shot Pel got, but I'm pretty happy with it. ^_^

See for yourself: http://www.dvd.co.kr/good_view.asp?gd=S0512070003

NB: use IE for this site when you want to buy. With firefox you can't complete te ordering process.
