Damn. Nice price too. Guess I'll be picking this up at some point since ADV will probably never finish the series.

Yes it is. Not only does this release finish the gold saints arc that ADV left off, but it also finishes the Poseidon arc. Yesasia carries another version of the R3 set in Cantonese, so that is another option, but it is a little more expensive. If you don't understand Japanese, Mandarin, or Cantonese, then it doesn't matter which set you get, just go for the cheaer one, lol

I would/might go for a Japanese language version. Japanese is the language it was made in etc. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
Sorry to be off topic, but can anyone explain the official story behind why ADV doesn't have the ending of Saint Seiya? I tried a search and was unsuccessful (I remember a post that gave some explanation but I think it may have been deleted by now).
Anyway, that set looks cool but it's too rich for my blood. That, and I wouldn't understand what's going on anyway /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

"We released all we had" is the official story. To go beyond that, you require speculation. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif Just remember that Toei Hates Us.
I remember someone saying something about a sub license....or something. /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif

Too rich? The set comes out to less then 16 dollars a DVD. If anything, that set is extremely cheap.
Yeah, sorry. I'm so poor, I can't afford to spend over $300 on a blind buy. That's chump change to most people, isn't it?

Not at all. I have to earn what I spend. Any chmpiness maybe would be people buying the whole lot just to complete the R1 stories, if they were happy with ADV's releases, because then the unlicensed episodes are what they really want and dividing them by $300 would be a much higher average.

Not at all. But considering that an average 26 episode series can cost anywhere from 100-150 dollars, the fact that you can get 114 episodes for little over 300 is a steal.
An even better deal! (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000B8V97E/qid=1133482136/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl74/002-4293109-7290405?n=507846&s=dvd&v=glance)-- $1449.98 for a 237 disc set! That's $6.12 per disc!
Of course the point is that it's the lump sum that's expensive, making the individual cost of the discs irrrelevent since dvd stores don't let you pay things off in installments. Which was my original point. /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif
Saying something is "too rich for my blood" doesn't imply that it isn't a good deal. It just says that I don't feel like blowing in $300 on something I've never seen, regardless of the inherant savings. And there are advantages to getting things in separate volumes rather than a complete set; you may pay more in the long run, but it's more advantagious when budgetting out for things like, oh, say, food. Or rent. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Yeah you can, it's called a credit card. With the absurd argument being pulled out, I'm done here.
Eh, it's not really absurd. You simply fail to grasp the difference between something that's a good deal and something that's affordable for the average person. It's nice that you like Saint Seiya, but you can't apply your own standards to everyone else.

Saint Seiya was licensed by DiC and ADV only has home video distribution rights. DiC only licensed up to episode 60. Since their "Knights of the Zodiac" version bombed on TV and the Bandai toyline was unsuccessful, it is doubtful DiC will license more episodes.
Basically, Saint Seiya is a dead license in the United States.

It was all they had the permission to license, apparently. It seems Toei wanted to test the waters and also licensed 40 episodes to DiC to release a TV butchered version. The TV version bombed, and it seems the real version didn't do that well either.

It's five boxes, but still on par with the R2 release, except without the overpriced reprints of old 80's action figures (the new toys look amazingly better, anyway).

Hey, Tablet, do you own this R3 set? If I'm going to buy it I'd like to make sure that it's a legit R3 set using the remastered R2 video masters and not the old '80s masters used on the Japanese VHS, HK boot discs, and ADV's release. I'm a bit concerned that the cover art is different from the R2 release. Thanks.

I'm quite confident DiC did not acquire the remastered R2 video since the print damage exists in the all the same places as the VHS tapes.

Well your confidence would be quite wrong as I've seen the R2 DVDs and have compared them. The video is pretty much identical even down to the grain. Having film damage in the same places only means that the film prints used for both the new masters and the old masters were identical. Considering the complete lack of composite artifacts, the level of detail in the transfer and other things it is completely impossible that they used anything but the same masters as Toei's release. That is unless DiC is able to perform magic and make 20 year old composite masters look identical to the new component masters created by Toei... /images/graemlins/icon_rolleyes.gif

Toei: "DiC, I don't want you to waste your money. Please license only 60 episodes and if it's a success you buy the license for further episodes".
or
DiC: "Toei, I'll buy just 60 episodes now. If it's sells well, I'll buy more".
I guess the second option is much more probable.

Agreed. And the fact that they didn't even license the whole arc is even more baffling. It sucks enough that we probably will never see anymore R1 Saint Seiya, but the fact that it stopped 13 episodes before the end of the Sanctuary Chapter ends is even more annoying.
