I noticed when picking up this week's pile-o-manga that TenTen volume 4 (didn't buy it, just saw it on the shelf) had an all new cover design/layout. The CMX name/log was MUCH smaller than the older CMX titles.
Didn't notice any other new CMX titles there to be sure, but I assume this means other CMX titles will get redesigned a well.
So much for series matching... /images/graemlins/sad.gif

That idea of spines matching from CMX went out the window with the last volume of Gals! New spine has a flowery Gals!. Old spine was just black text.

I hope in second printings they re-do the covrs of Seimaden, I can't stand the current ones. . . .

They said they were going to do this in their recent interview (although maybe it wasn't as prominent because everyone was concentrating on the rest of their plans to screw over loyal fans).
Basically, their logo was so huge that stores assumed it was an author name or something and filed all their titles under 'C', so they are fixing it.

I love the new covers. They show even more art than the original Japanese covers do, because those are usually obscured by a publisher's frame. All the new CMX releases have more art-centric covers with smaller logos. There is also some variation among different series, so its interesting that they aren't sticking to 1 certain type of "new" cover.
With that looser spine and more pliable pages, their new books are just awesome. Its the first optimistic sign I've seen that CMX can change to fit what consumers (or confused vendors?) want.
Let's hope the trend continues.

I like the new style of covers too. *drools over KKJ vol. 1 cover*

All agreed. I feel good for CMX's direction recently. Though they've been mute on it, I have a feeling they wish the TenTen thing never would have happened any more than their customers. Little they've done since follows the pattern many thought that would have laid out.

Yeah, there haven't been any other really doinky releases from them aside from TenTen. And while they cut out a panel from the first volume of Sword of the Dark Ones, apparently the subsequent volumes are uncut.

While I agree with many that the designs are much better (more art, no diagonal framing), I'm finding that, well, I'm having a hard time finding them. I'm so used to the rather inelegant ones that I just don't see them (I passed over KKJ three times today).
The unintended problem is that the older titles and even earlier volumes with the inelegant spines are still being misshelved.... There is still a CMX section in some of the Borders that I go to and the new volumes of the titles are shelved correctly. So, yeah here's hoping the reprints also have new spines.
