View Full Version : 2005: Good Year for NYC Dubs?

I have a question on the end of the year: despite the unfortunate editing on One Piece (which will cause another 9/11 thanks to 4KKKids' scissors), has 2005 been a good year for NYC dubs and their actors?

I certainely would say so. With such awesome dubs such as Midoris Day, Genshiken, and Ah my goddess! it was a fantastic year!

And of course, I'll add Shingu to the list of excellent NY dubs from this year; a title that not too many people have talked about, but nonetheless has a very nice dub; I love many of the actors on the show, including Billy Regan, Angora Deb, Daniel Kevin Harrison, Lisa (sigh)Ortiz, and Rachel Lillis.

Of the '05 NY dubs I've heard, I think it was a good year. Giant Robo, Midori Days, and Shingu are all high quality dubs (only seen one vol. of Shingu, so I'm assuming it doesn't get worse). I've heard good things about the AMG and Genshiken dubs, but haven't gotten around to them yet.

As others have mentioned: Midori Days, Ah! My Goddess TV, Giant Robo, and Genshiken were all excellent. I haven't heard them yet, but based on the buzz they are getting, I plan to get Piano and Shingu eventually as well.

From what I've heard of them, Seven of Seven and Shrine of the Morning Mist are also quite good as well.

Good to know. Out of curiousity, is anybody embarrassed by the 4KKids' dub of One Piece and wish it would go to another NYC distributor like Central Park Media?

I dislike the fact that MARC DIRAISON is in it...

He should be in other shows dammit! >_> *he doesn't seem to be in a lot... I hope I'm wrong*

Hey, it's work. And he's been in quite a lot of stuff this year.

My favorite Diraison role was Kenji Murasame in Giant Robo. He rocked.

Yeah... work is work, you're right ^_^;

... anyway, it seems that I'm not watching whatever he's in >_> *hence my line of thinking*

...

he was in NARUTARU? *haven't been watching it dubbed...*

... but of course, I loved him in SHOOTFIGHTER TEKKEN... that show was awesome

Diraison's been in many of the highlight dubs already noted in this thread... from Giant Robo to Piano to Shrine of the Morning Mist to Midori Days to Ah My Goddess! TV.

In fact, I'd say he's easily had the best year for male talent in NYC apart from Drew Aaron.

NYC dubs I saw this year: Shingu, Piano, Giant Robo, Genshiken, Shadow Star.

I was kind of disappointed with all of them, except the dub for Giant Robo, which was a good dub, but I lost interest in the show. There wasn't a stellar dub along the lines of Boogiepop or His and Hers this year...maybe those highly regarded dubs spoiled me (both are in my top 5 favorite dubs), since they were among the first three or four NYC dubs I heard. And I guess I sort of expect that level of greatness from NY dubs and feel disappointed that none of the ones I've heard recently come close. In the end I'm left a little anxious to hear a NY dub go all the way again.

I hear Midori Days is real good dub, but I'm not that interested in the show.

From what I've heard of them, Seven of Seven

No, sorry sorry sorry but Seven of Seven was a terrible show from top to bottom. Veronica Taylor did some great work with voicing seven versions of the same character but the dub was still terribly annoying and grating.

I have heard some great NY dubs this year though with Shingu, Girls Bravo (though the series is pretty bad), La Portrait De Petite Cossette and a few others though so yes, NY had a very good year.

Hard to say really. Giant Robo, Genshiken and AMG were or are good. I've heard reasonably good things about Shingu, Piano, Midori Days and even the Tom Wayland directed Mew Mew Power from 4kids. So Media Blasters and Right Stuf did well enough by the talent base.

But while Kakurenbo from Tripwire was solid (though not dialogue heavy anyway) CPM showed a more troubling picture. The long enjoyable if sometimes spotty Patlabor dub was cut short this year, and one of the few new shows from the company in the last 24 months, Shadowstar, was a poor, under-funded effort. In the upcoming year, Outlanders from Tripwire again I know will be good, but also again short. And Votoms would be overpriced for its niche market if it had a dub, so a dub it does not have--which makes it an unfair point to bring up in my mind, but since it's seemingly the most high profile upcoming release from CPM for the first half of next year it stands out in a most unfortunate profile.

A couple years ago we had TRSI putting out a couple stellar Headline dubs and MB was heating up NYAV post and CPM had some small projects left and right from in-house to Mercury to Matlin to the remnants of TAJ. And 4kids, if still questionable in business still produced some enjoyably listenable work. But while things have slowed down, NYAV seems to have become the leader and produces fine quality I think along with a larger load of MB shows plus some now for TRSI, and Headline as well is producing for both companies. Wayland's Tripwire is starting small but I hope it carries the majority of CPM's work from here on out.

So this year was the definition of hit and miss for NY in my view, but the future has good promise. I have to hope after all. If I can't hear the likes of Rachael Lillis or Angora Deb at least two or three times a year I don't know what I'd do. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

You need to hear Piano. His Mr. Shirakawa is an amazingly deep and complex performance.

That's a good summation of the New York scene. I must add Kujibiki Unbalance which we all know is within Genshiken as a great little NY dub. And kudos to Mandy Bonhomme for her excellent portrayal of the pink-haired Komaki as she has not yet been mentioned in this thread. I consider her to be one of the most versatile New York V.A.'s I've heard. I hope they make more Kujibiki Unbalance episodes.

ManOfLaManga

PS. Someone also mentioned not wanting to see Midori Days - well I sure recommend it - great show, hilarious, and a very nice dub.

I love Komaki! My favorite of the girls in the show. And Bonhomme's performance is a joy to listen to, with absolutely everyone else in Kujibiki. (I also like that we get a low and cold Rachael Lillis in that, and then her sweet and shy Ohno in Genshiken on the same disc.) I dare say it's almost better overall than Genshiken itself, but it's hard to compare since they're so different and they're having so much fun with the ever irreverent and delightfully derivative Kuji-un.

I think I said it before, but if Kujibiki was made into a real show I would probably buy it. Provided the VAs stay the same. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

I thought it would be everything I avoid in anime--but that's exactly its point. The ultimate and brilliant derivativeness of the whole thing is just beautiful, and funny as hell. But yes, it must have the same dub!

Sorry if this sounds bombastic, but doesn't any New York fan care that I want One Piece to remain dubbed in NYC? I can't stand it being dubbed to ruin by California or Texas mostly due to the fact I can't afford to move or stay at either of those places to do voice-overs. When I first heard that One Piece was coming to NYC for dubbing, this would be a chance for me to debut in anime voice-acting. Sorry again if it sounds pompous, but it's true. Besides, I still blame 4Kids for ruining One Piece and giving NYC a bad name.

...is there even any risk of One Piece switching studios?

I have no probs with the One Piece dub.

I liked it & its funny at times despite the edits that 4kids are doing.

(Beside Lisa Ortiz doing the voice of Tony Tony Chopper;))

I doubt 4kids will change studios.

Thats my 2 cents.
