For me, I've found the optimal thing to do is order two discs at a time. That's small enough for them to put the order in a padded envelope so it'll be ignored in customs, and I don't even have to go to the post office to get the stuff. I tried doing one disc at a time but for some reason always ended up with broken keepcases that way.
[/ QUOTE ]
Two standard size discs? Oy, GITS: SAC SE for sure ain't standard size.
[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah, I meant two standard size keepcases. If it's a bigger SE or a box it'll either go alone or I'll order from another (customs safe) store.
... hmmm... this seems like the best place to ask...
SO, I've been going to DDD for a while, but now that the site is all screwy *hell, I can't get in now... I wonder what happened to my GENSHIKEN order?*
... I've been kind of thinking of going here... it also seems that it's cheaper...
But I have two questions...
-Can someone please explain the shipping policy?
It's really confusing for me for some reason... so they ship by weight? Or by number of discs?
So... if I order that upcoming TRIGUN set, that's 3 ITEMS?
-Also, what has been your track record with the thing? What have been the common problems?
... Yeah, I think that's all
Thanks in advance
Shipping is based entirely on weight, but to make it easier to calculate, the weight is counted in "items" instead of the usual units (lbs/g/etc.) I'm not sure how much it is exactly but I think it should be around 0.4 lbs = 1 item. (As 0.4 lbs is close to what a single disc in a keepcase weighs.)
So if you order 2 normal discs in keepcases, expect to pay shipping for 2 items, if it's a 7-disc boxset with the original cases (such as the first Gungrave box), expect to pay shipping for 7 items. Tins weigh a bit more so you pay more, thinpak collections weigh less so for those you also pay less.
Hope that helps.
As for problems, the major one which seems to bug people (and isn't really a problem if you know what you're doing) is that when pre-ordering, all items are counted as 1 item for shipping purposes. This is because they cannot possibly know how much an item will weigh until they actually get it in stock.
So if you pre-order say a 7-disc box, during checkout it will only list shipping for 1 item. This however does not mean you'll be charged shipping for just 1 item; the rate will go up when they get the box in stock (in this case up to the expected 7 items.)
If this is a big issue and you want to be on the safe side, don't pre-order anything and wait till they get the items in stock. That way you can see exactly how many items worth of shipping you'll be charged for during checkout. Just put the item(s) in the cart and go to checkout, and it will say how many items and how much shipping will be. Then simply cancel the items or go back to the main page if you feel it's too much or you just wanted to check (do this for the Trigun set and it should show up as 4 items.)
Also, their packaging is not the best (though certainly better than DDD) and I've had a couple of ruined artboxes. If this happens to you, just get in touch with their excellent customer service and they'll send you a replacement after you've sent in yours (you'll even get credit for your shipping expenses.)

ummm shipping is NOT based on weight alone.
you can have a standard dvd case that has dual hubs and holds 2 discs... and get charged for 2 discs not 1.
shipping is based on the # of discs the item has and also weight if it exceeds a certain limit. also additional charges for abnormal size if the item has special packaging.
Wow, thanks a lot... that was very helpful!
I'm gonna give it a shot next month

It seems you are right about this (I think they may have changed their FAQ since I last read it, which I admit was a long time ago...), but in effect it doesn't change anything. You can see it as a 2-disc set, e.g. Planetes, shipping as 2 items because the extra disc and hinge makes it go over the weight limit for 1 item. Full boxsets with keepcases (such as the aforementioned Gungrave, or Paranoia Agent) still work out to the amount of discs in it.
The ones that seem somewhat arbitrarily set are the thinpaks and bricks. For example both the Chobits and Mahoromatic thinpaks are 8-disc sets and count as 4 items while the EVA thinpak, which is only a 6-disc set, counts as 6. Either way this is all mostly just a matter of chump change, and after a while you learn to guesstimate with a fairly high rate of success.

For those who have lost packages by the Post Office, how well does DVD Pacific
handle replacements? Will they replace what was lost or will they be assholes
and claim no responsibility?

At the moment my current invoice has exceeded the 12 disc limit and is sat with 18 discs awaiting dispatch. However they haven't moved to being charged yet, just sat their waiting. Normally it automatically bills you once it hits 12 but it's not done it yet. When they do ship though I'm seriously hoping that customs miss this one, $270 worth of stuff coming my way and I've a feeling it will be 2 boxes worth because 2 of the items are the Scrapped Princess LE's (Volumes 5 & 6 /images/graemlins/happy.gif ).

It'd be nice if they could come close to shipping by the time the item(s) street. Lately, I have been getting orders that don't ship until up to 2 weeks after the street date! This has never really happened in the past, only within the past month or so.

It happens to me regularly (I always wait for 12 item packages to save on shipping). It's just when they are busy, this sort of overfill stays around for one or two days until they have time to sort it out. What I usually do is make a pre-selection of 12 items, and keep the rest around for later. When I mail them a selection, they usually make it on the spot, but it can still be a day in between until the package is actually shipped out.

Bandai's (hopefully) new price point for anime is definitely a good thing... somehow, getting a DVD for below $15 makes it a hell of a lot easier to justify.

It's not really their fault if they don't receive the DVDs on time though - that's down to distributors. And this sort of thing happens a lot around Christmas time in my experience, especially with anime.

I use the international airmail option ($4.99 + $0.99 per item), the most I've ever paid in customs fees has been just under £20 which on working it out was cheaper than paying for the individual postage charges.

Just to let anyone interested know that may not preorder, I had the following items (not scheduled to street until 1/24) already ship to me as early as Thursday the 12th. So even though it says Pre-Order, they are actually in stock and will ship immediately.
Scrapped Princess: Pacifica's Destiny - Volume 6 (With Toy, Limited Edition, Collector's Edition)
Princess Tutu: Erwachen - Volume 3
My bandai titles from 1/24 haven't shipped yet, but I expect them to very soon.
Sorry if Tutu was already mentioned.

I think this might be beacuse the card I had as default when i ordered is no longer being used.
However, I have contacted them since advising them what to do but nothing has been done. They have not even replied to my emails....i'm worried it's gonna get cancelled on me...

Odd. I had a similar problem once where my internet connection went down so I couldn't activate my e-card for a purchase (and so the card was declined.) When I got my connection back I simply mailed their order department with the information and said that I had activated the card and that they should try charging it again. I once cancelled an order with them via email and it took two days of worrying that they hadn't replied, so I emailed again to a different address, only to get a cancellation email and then another email from somebody who couldn't find my order...
They were very helpful getting me my spur-of-the-moment Zeta Gundam set a week before last Xmas 04.
Hmm - Birmingham?

Just to let anyone interested know that may not preorder, I had the following items (not scheduled to street until 1/24) already ship to me as early as Thursday the 12th. So even though it says Pre-Order, they are actually in stock and will ship immediately.
Scrapped Princess: Pacifica's Destiny - Volume 6 (With Toy, Limited Edition, Collector's Edition)
Princess Tutu: Erwachen - Volume 3
My bandai titles from 1/24 haven't shipped yet, but I expect them to very soon.
Sorry if Tutu was already mentioned.

Ok, I have a few questions before I start buying from DVD Pacific:
How much better are they compared to DeepDiscountDVD and VideoUniverse?
How quickly do they process and ship your order after you order something compared to DDD and VideoUniverse?
Why does DVD Pacific have a 12 item limit?
When you preorder something, when do they charge your credit card?
I also see that Scrapped Princess vol. 6+LE figure has shipped from DVD Pacific. I wonder why TRSI hasn't recieved their stock yet? (The same goes with Avenger Complete Collection)

They charge your credit card when the item ships. I can vouch for DVD P's extremely great customer service. All e-mails I send to them on weekdays are usually answered within 20 minutes. Sometimes, a rep even works late to 11 p.m Pacific Time. The shipping charges are rather expensive, but even with shipping added, DVD P is still quite cheap.

I'm very satisfied with DVD pacific and their customer service. There isn't a 12 item limit for ordering, but there is for shipping. As they charge a shipping fee per package ($2 or $5, depending on surface or air mail), there is a limit to how many items you're allowed to stuff in one package, which is set to 12. Item count is usually 1 per disc, so 1 for most DVD's, but can be 5 or 6 for a season box set, depending on weight. Avenger complete was 3 items, for instance. Tins often are more items.
I keep all my preorders in one big invoice (the hold and combine option), and as soon as 12 or more are available for shipping, I email the order department with my preferred selection of 12. They will ship out and select automatically (usually alphabetically) when the items hit 12 anyway if you don't send a preference.
Anyway, by shipping per 12 items, shipping costs are minimized. Of course, if you live abroad, VAT considerations can still make you prefer other options. My country is relatively lax with VAT seizures, so I can afford to send over bigger packages.
As for shipping out early, they ship out as soon as they receive stock. DVDpacific is often quite early with Geneon. Media Blasters, Funimation, Bandai, Viz and ADV vary between weeks early to around shipping date. I'm afraid it's hard to predict. ADV was rather late in the 4th quarter 2005, but past week they shipped 1/24 titles, so you never know. Media Blasters can be several weeks early, but Otogi Zoshi shipped only a few days early last week.

From the pictures that I've seen, it looks like it's going to be a slipcover thing like they did with GitS.
Some new stuff from Media-Blasters:
Gunparade March Complete Collection (http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=707775)
Loveless Vol.3 (http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=707779)
Otogi Zoshi Premium Box (http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=707758)
Chris lists Otogi Zoshi as box 1 of 2 and only 325 min. DVDPacific has it at 6PC though and anything else just wouldn't make sense so I'm guessing the latter is the correct one.

I agree that Chris seems to be wrong here, a SRP of $129 wouldn't make sense for 3 discs. It has to be the complete series. Besides, Media Blasters only puts out 2 sets for series with more than 26 episodes like Kenshin and 12 Kingdoms. No sign of Riki-Oh animated that was announced in the same batch... all they seem to have at Pacific is some old live action version.

I'm not sure exactly why it says on order. My guess is they don't "pre-order" things that were previously released. If I'm not mistaken they did the same for Now and Then Here and There when it was repriced. It should get to them on the release date though...

I recieved this, Melody of Oblivion vol. 1+box and Maison Ikkoku boxset 4 from DVD Pacific today (ordered Feb 10th). Yeah - but still just an increase of about 30p, which is much better than paying VAT plus the extortionate Royal Mail "handling charge". I've recently taken to combining my orders for one disc + a cheap disc like Lain, Dunbine, etc. Sadly this now means that my FMA 2 and Gundam Seed 3 are held up by the seemingly unavailable Dunbine 11 and 12. And the later volumes of both series have already started to turn up....

Neither can I. I always order volumes two at a time though, and 25 cents more per DVD is not all too bad in my opinion. For me the exchange rate is complete suckage right now and ends up being a much bigger factor in the final price anyway.

Naturally the exchange rate is crap for me as well (and has been for too long), but at least I can order up to 8 "items" at a time and still feel safe from teh import duties. I just don't know why they suddenly felt they had to charge more for shipping. I hope they don't plan to make this an annual event or something like that.

Probably because the box was too big. At least with a larger than normal box is the only time I had to pay customs when ordering from DVD Pacific.

for sure, you right. only after the order shipped did i start thinking maybe the box would be too big and heavy but, alas, too late to change
in the future, i will definitely try not to stick so many SE's and LE's in one order. my first two DVDP orders earlier in the yr were mostly singles and came through untouched. also, i'm loving this 3-4 day delivery, i've never gotten anime so fast from an e-tailer in my life!

I also had that three day thing happen last week. Shipped Friday, received Monday /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif I was worried I wouldn't get it for the following weekend /images/graemlins/wink.gif I've never had anything from outside the EU take less than four days, except for stuff shipped by EMS and the like, of course.

Armored Trooper Votoms stage 2: Kummen Jungle Wars (http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=718794)

Shocking to have to ask, as I've obviously been using DVDPacific so long I've forgotten, but who is the 2nd choice etailer for us Europeans if Pacific cannot supply an item?
Just had an email to say that Dunbine 12 is discontinued and they cannot supply it, and I'm expecting another email about Dunbine 11 soon too. ADV's fault for selling off discs 1-10 in their sale. So I think Deepdiscountdvd has disc 12 in stock and I've ordered it there.
And then I realised that the Fullmetal Alchemist second tin was no longer listed at Pacific too! My choices here are amazon (expensive, customs magnet), Deepdiscount (out of stock, just over customs when you factor in shipping), or Movietyme (unreliable, not stock measure)
Anywhere else? And don't say rightstuf. If I wanted someone to have a copy of my signature and a copy of my card stored in their filing cabinet I might as well give them the card...

John, if you don't mind possibly not getting the OST and getting the R2 play.com have the UK tin (should be pretty much the same as the R1, although possibly without the OST) for £15.
Failing that I used to use DVDBoxoffice.com who were pretty good most of the time (free shipping offsets the sometimes higher prices), although their stock indicators from memory were not always that great.

Well I would, but I'm trying to stay consistent in my regions for once. If I ever have to sell up, people are more likely to buy an all-R1 set of FMA than a mixed set.
And Dvdboxoffice - I used to use them a few years ago, but they tend to order stuff in so backorders took forever. Might be worth a go. I'm kicking myself really - I struggled to find the first set last month. I got married in November so I completely missed the FMA boat with all the planning and expenditure, and after I finally got hold of the first tin I swore to myself that as soon as I had more money I'd order the 2nd, even though I haven't filled the first one.
Might just make more sense to order a few goodies from amazon. that way the inevitable customs charge is split over more than one item.

If I really have to have it, and dvdpacific can't get it after I talked to them, I usually try www.archonia.com. (http://www.archonia.com.) They're horribly expensive, not much % off retail, and 21% Belgium VAT as well, but if it's only for one or two items a year, I can manage. Notice how they still have the R1 Fullmetal Alchemist 6 tin in stock, but for around €39 - it's not cheap I guess.

Edit - I've cracked it now. Some strange interaction between the cookies and mozilla firefox perhaps.
They had Dunbine 12 in stock too, which cushioned the blow of paying so much for the set. And just watch - it'll come back into stock at Pacific too.

Just to wrap this up and try to drag the topic back to Pacific.
the ebay retailers, from looking through their feedback and their small print, may not actually have everything they list in stock - if they're going to distributors then they will have the same problem that Pacific has had - once they place an order the distributor gets back to them to say they're out. Because this process can take up to a month (it did with Pacific) this usually means, especially with ebay sellers, you can't order elsewhere. United Publications, if I remember rightly, don't keep a massive amount in stock either.
In any case - my order for Dunbine 11 is still nmot cancelled at Pacific, and I've ordered 12 from Archonia.
Bit sneaky of ADV to sell off all the other discs, knowing full well the conclusion is out of print..

I'm sure they are. It probably means they didn't manufacture as many of the later discs because sales were so poor. I originally stopped buying it when I found out it was going to be 12 discs of 4 rather than 10 discs of 5 (give or take 1, as its 49 episodes). I only started now because a friend helped me get discs 2-10 from the ADV sale.

It's as simple as space and money and Gantz in it's original release proved that. I realize that's an EXTREME example. But even than it comes down to this one reality how bad does a person want the series? If they really want it at that time they will buy it if not they won't it's that simple.

Nah - it was purely financial - an extra 60 dollars (remember, they only lowered the price of Dunbine halfway through) on a series that, after disc 1, I wasn't sure I liked enough to continue. I'd factored for 10 discs in my budget, and finding out that it was 12 was enough to suggest I should spend my limited anime budget elsewhere, especially as I was saving to get married at the time.
Glad I waited and tried again though - I'm really enjoying it. And to drag this thread back on topic - i hope Pacific find me a copy of disc 11 as its in the same order as my copy of Full Metal Alchemist disc 2!

Why not trying to find vol. 11 on eBay. There are a few copies on there. And FYI, even if it was an extra $60, no smart person would pay full SRP, so you would have only had to spend around $30-36 extra if you found them online.

Oh, I didn't notice that. I don't think that Pacific will get vol. 11 in, especially since TRSI says that vol. 11 is "no longer available for purchase" after I bought my copy. Oh, and vol. 12 has been removed from Pacific (search for Dunbine does not bring it up), and I also had it in my wish list.
BurtKenobi
03-04-2006, 05:20 PM
Yeah - they removed Dunbine 12 because when I ordered one they eventually got a report saying "out of print" and cancelled my order and deleted it from the catalogue. Strangely I ordered 11 a few days before and they're still waiting for a report for that one.
And that was the trigger for this whole discussion - I then checked FMA 6 and found that it too had been removed
kusanagi-sama
03-04-2006, 10:03 PM
Which FMA 6? The tin? The tins are limited, so once FUNimation sells out of them, they are no longer available.
Also of note, they credited my account for what it cost me to ship the shipping Tenjho Tenge box, so I should expect within the next week or so. (I sent it Feb 22nd, so I should recieve it around March 10-13th)

Perfect, then. I'm not particularly in a hurry, so I can save some money now that I have to split my orders in more shipments so the value declared on the parcels is below the maximum non taxable.
Ah... /images/graemlins/relief1.gif I miss the good old days when the postal services didn't care to ask me the VAT...

It really does vary to the UK. I'd say normally about 2 weeks to me, althoug just after Xmas it was down to 5 days. I expect that was because there isn't much for the post office to do in January.

that would be my guess as well, shipping times on my spreadsheet are all over the place for DVDP, but generally there seems to be a decrease in the time it takes around January (holds true for 2004-06, when most of my orders arrived in about 5 days).
As I said, it tends to average out at about 10-12 working days for me though (20 working days is the extreme end of the scale, but that has only happened once or twice out of 90+ orders).

I ordered last monday and got my order of FMP:Fumoffu Vol. 1&2, Genshiken Vol. 3 and Planetes Vol. 1 yesterday. All were in great condition except for Planetes. I e-mailed returns and got a response right away. Now I just have to ship the disc back and they'll even pay for shipping. This place is great, I won't order from anyone else unless DVDPacific doesn't have it.
Oh, they said to just mail the disc. Does that mean I keep the case and they'll just replace the disc itself? (which is fine).

Oh my! I have to change my ordering habits again!
I have just received a parcel with books from Amazon and guess what? Now those @$$#0£&$ of the post charge 5.50€ every parcel from outside the EU (+VAT +etc if it's over the limit of course). /images/graemlins/anger200.gif
I think they still can't check everything, so I hope they charge only those packs attracting more their attention. Surely they're taking their good time and 5.50€ for a ten days delay is a theft.
I remember a user here (maybe Pyocola?) saying that DVDP uses those envelopes with air bubbles when you order only 1~2 dvd's. Can anybody confirm this? I need to experiment to find the best compromise.

Yep, for 1-2 standard keep cases they use padded envelopes, more than that and they use boxes. I've been fine with 2 DVDs per order for some time (never got hit for the envelopes), but now I'm hearing all kinds of reports that they're nabbing practically everything that comes through. /images/graemlins/anger200.gif This is part of the reason for why I've decided to cut back some, 1 DVD at a time just feels a bit too expensive and tedious. And the random values on the packages don't even help anymore, because they'll just send you a letter asking for a copy of the invoice with the real value before they send the package any further (at the same time delaying it for another couple of days of processing). /images/graemlins/depresse.gif
Out of curiosity, does DVD Pacific ever have sales or are the prices listed usually pretty much the best deals one can ever expect from DP? Thank you.
Pyocola
03-17-2006, 04:28 PM
No, as far as I know they've never had any sales. Occasionally they'll tweak the discounts but it's only a matter of cents. They did have the Getter Robo collection I think at something like 80% off once, but that was either a misprice or a one time thing.
ulkesh
03-17-2006, 07:55 PM
They tend to increase the discount on titles they (or their supplier) have loads of dead stock for; the front page even has a list of the highest discounted priced items. Generally naff, or old titles.
random obervastion
My copy of Darling arrived this morning with a post-it note stuck to it, doing a little checking it's DVD-P's item number, either it's the first in the box or the last or it's a random insight into how they do things when sorting at their warehouse.
Anyone else ever had a post it stuck to their DVD's?

It really does depend on the item and supplier in my experience. Some things you can order and will be back in stock the next day or two, other things might take a month.
I usually email them and ask if they have an idea of when things will come in if I'm waiting.

Na, I scrolled back to check. The last regular Geneon update was 02/14. I think the licensing announcement of Kamichu and Strawberry Marshmellow came afterwards. I have a handy trick to determine if a listing mentioned is new or old: if the item aspect ID (you'll see it in the page adress) is in the same range as the ones you discover and are certain are new, it's certainly new (in this case the page numbers were all between 723400 and 723700), if it's a lot lower, it's an old title that was probably already mentioned (though sometimes titles are forgotten and added later, or new licenses are shoved in suddenly).
