Continuing on here from the previous threads... 1 (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1164305) 2 (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1172195) 3 (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1179878) 4 (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1192382) 5 (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1207367) Well... the by-episode discussion is getting close to an end, with the end of the third season and then the second movie, so the topic is getting close to free-for all mode now. This may be the last discussion thread, but if we hit the limit again I'll make another (nothing stopping me, even if we aren't following an episode pattern /images/graemlins/wink.gif). Once again, I hope all of you have had fun watching and discussing this great magical girl series.

Some general notes on subthreads and spoilers:

Subthreads: Each episode will have a subthread that gets started on a certain day and we go at a rate of on episode per day. It may be started at any time as long as it's the appropriate day (past midnight in Central Time, for me to more easily keep track). I will usually start it early, but for those times when I don't someone else can start one up. As of 12/16, we're on episode 66. You may also start a subthread on a previous episode or a non-episode related subthread if you wish.

Spoilers: Please try to avoid discussing plot events or characters that have yet to come up at the current episode. If it's needed, you can still do so, but make sure to use spoiler tags and indicate the importance of spoiler if possible, to make it easier for those who are watching for the first time to participate. If you want to AVOID spoilers, then make sure you have at least seen up to the episode where we are at before viewing the thread. We are almost near the very end, and when we get to Movie 2 this will be a free-for-all topic, so this is very important.

Yet another episode with some important events, as Sakura finally confesses to Yukito, and she also briefly discovers that Eriol has magic powers.

The scene near the end of the episode always gets me teary-eyed (actually am a little already thinking about it). Maybe he was just trying to stay on Sakura's good side, but I thought what Shaoran did was pretty cool.

First a comment from the last thread

[ QUOTE ]
I'm no shounen-ai fan, but this episode was very sweet. Although, when you think about it, Touya didn't really give up that much. He doesn't mind losing the ability to see his mother, and other than that, he's just losing the ability to sense magic power.

[/ QUOTE ]

Um, Touya's power goes beyond "just" that. He can see more than just his mother, but all ghosts and other "non-human" things (he obviously knowns Yukito and Naruku are not human and he seems to be able to see Mirror's true form in some way "under" her Sakura disguise to know she has long hair). He also seems to sense/know when Sakura is in danger from comments made to Yue and Mizuki. Its only vaguely hinted at the anime, but in the manga he also has at least some mild precognitive abilities <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> he knew exactly how things would end up between Shaoran and Sakura and his leaving and that he would make her cry and his having to rush her after Shaoran to give him the bear, etc.</span>

Episode 66
Multi-tissue episode! Sakura's sweet confession and Yukito's gentle rejection and admission of Touya being his #1 is just awesome. Sakura shows so much maturity in how she handles things, way more than many adult females would have. It was also cool to see her stumble on Eriol only to supress her memory of it (though it seemed like he was only barely able to do so since she still remembers everything but his face).

The ending sends me bawling everytime, though, as Sakura sits on the swing telling Shaoran what happened and his facial expression when she tells him she was rejected. She held it together all that time, and even Tomoyo didn't seem to notice, but finally telling him, she can't stop her tears. Her crying isn't the heart wrenching sounds that Meilin made, but still just makes me cry too. Shaoran's reaction also is really telling, in that he cared more that she was hurting than thinking "yahoo, she's mine" /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

This is actually the first time we officially see "gentle" Shaoran as he's this way for <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>majority of Movie 2</span>.

Wow, that long? /images/graemlins/stunned1.gif /images/graemlins/tongue.gif I had read so much around the internet that I pretty much knew it from the start. I have been saying it's rather subdued for the most part, though, so I can see how someone would miss it all the way up to the point where it's explicitly stated here.

Yeah, I'm pretty slow /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif. My only defense is <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>I was hoping Touya and Miss Mizuki would get back together. </span> Therefore I tried to ignore this possible relationship. Although that's still not a very good excuse /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif.

GREAT EPISODE! *like the other 65 episodes and the movie /images/graemlins/tongue.gif *

As what everyone else has been saying, I really liked the end of the episode where Li comforts Sakura, my god he's so kind... it's the reason why I routed for him so hard when this episode first came around for me /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

I really liked the Platinum instrumental too, it was great and helped convey the moment better

And Sakura is so strong, able to not show Yukito that she'd cry afterwards... she handled herself admirably *like what everyone else was saying*

Man, I need to marathon the series over again (I was just letting it cool down after my second go through of the second-half...)

... yeah, there's a ton of time to do this!

Onto ep. 66:

[ QUOTE ]
Yet another episode with some important events, as Sakura finally confesses to Yukito, and she also briefly discovers that Eriol has magic powers.

[/ QUOTE ]

Naruku just about gives herself away, as well, when she comments on Touya being sleepy. Interesting as well as Eriol continues his guidance to Shaoran when he tells him to do his best, most likely in reference to him comforting Sakura later.

And wasn't the use of both Maze and Illusion a little overboard for the situation? /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif But, hey, Sakura's powers are growing in leaps and bounds (and Shaoran's as well, as Yue intones). As for Eriol being revealed, I wonder if that was this particular task itself--testing Sakura to find him as the source of the disturbance. (Though I think the ultimate objective was to help define and focus Sakura's capability of love, in regards to her Guardians as mush as her friends and family.)

Maybe, but it was pretty cool anyway. /images/graemlins/happy.gif On a trivial note, I think one of the random girls that walked in on the maze was voiced by Rie Kugimiya (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=808).

Not as good as the last one, but Sakura had yet another nice "angry voice" here in response to Touya's latest kaijuu comment (never took serious not of it before, but Tange does seem to have quite a variety of angry sounds and hoe's. Nice that they're not the exact same all the time).

I don't see how Sakura's feelings toward Yukito were "similar" to those she feels towards her father. Familial love is a very different feeling than romantic love, and you don't get lovesick over family(as Sakura did repeatedly over Yukito in the first season).

Still, the last scene with Shaoran was gorgeous. I like Sakura strength and maturity and I like that Sakura has grown close enough to Shaoran that she can confide in him like that. If she had confessed earlier, she probably would have gone to Tomoyo.

Sakura knew this herself, and said as much to Syaoran on the swings. Yukito was just trying to be as gentle as possible when he rejected her, and maybe help push her every so slightly into the arms of someone more than willing to love her back. ^_^

After two episodes with some really important plot events, this one is kind of a breather, dealing with the aftermath of what just happened previously. Won't be like that for long, though.

Sakura decides to give Shaoran a present for being kind to her at the park and ends up losing quite a bit of sleep over it. Yukito is a bit worried about seeing Sakura again, but of course things turn out alright. Touya gets surprised at Sakura showing up this time, being unable to sense her as he had been able to do in the past.

I was actually very fond of the "lunch" analogy Touya used...

ALSO, I really liked the last few minutes of this episode, it was directed with a very delicate touch with the lighting and music.

I like the bittersweet tone that came out when Li clutched one of the glow particles, it was all really neat.

Well, we're almost at the end... it's making me sad, but hey, it was a fun journey right?

Turns out Yukito was aware that Sakura's for him and her dad weren't "completely the same", but I still think that's a big understatement in terms of the difference between the two sets of feelings(well, unless we start talking about Freudian psycology /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif)

Anyway, this episode is where we start getting hints that <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> Sakura might be starting to return Shaoran's feeings, what with her staying up all night over the course of a week to make Shaoran a present.</span>

On the final volume now...

In order to find the source of the strange occurrences, Sakura decides to go the past and meet Clow Reed. In order to do so, she must use take the risk of using the powerful RETURN card's magic.

I think this is the episode with the insert song, "Mienai Chizu". That's yet another one I've gotten hooked on (CCS definitely makes good use of insert songs for certain scenes).

bctaris

Curious little tidbit: in this, effectively the last time Sakura and Shaoran work together in battle before the upcoming finale, Sakura uses the card (Thunder) that they captured together the very first time they teamed up (though Shaoran probably wouldn't categorize it like that at the time /images/graemlins/wink.gif) back in early season one.

And I thought it was interesting that Tomoyo looked visibly sad when Shaoran said he would not tell Sakura his feelings when they arrive at the festival.

Time for the last big confrontation of the series as Eriol finally reveals himself to Sakura at the entrance of Tsukimine Shrine. Eriol challenges Sakura to defeat him, and if she doesn't, everyone will fall into eternal sleep under Eriol's magic of darkness. The LIGHT card is what needed, but Sakura finds it very difficult to transform the last two cards (LIGHT and DARK) on her own. Kerberos, Yue, and Shaoran are all there to lend a helping hand in helping Sakura overcome this final obstacle.

Ahh... this episode is pretty cool. I was wondering when we would finally get to see Ruby Moon and Spinel Sun fight, so seeing that was neat. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

bctaris

Not much to say on this one, I guess. This does tie up a couple plot points, though. And it gives some insight into Yue's personality (which will be further resolved in the next two episodes.) But on that point of Yue being very set against anyone other than Clow being his master, it makes me think of why he was so rough on Sakura during the trial. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

And it should be noted that starting last episode, the animation goes into "end of series" high budget mode. That so much of it is used simply for facial expressions or interesting little things like Sakura turning over in bed is great. I love the sort of dream world atmosphere in Clow Reed's past, rendered like an Impressionist painting.

And the evil flying snowman army is the best thing Eriol came up with since the plush sheep. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Episode 68: Sakura, the Past, and Clow Reed

Excellent episode (again… as usual… I need to open with a more effective sentence).

I really like how they put emphasis on how distinct the relationship between master and guardians were in the two time periods that the guardians have lived through, yet it is shown that one is not more important than the other. Yes, Yue and Kero were happy with their lives with Clow Reed, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they aren’t happy now. Yue and Kero love their new master, just differently from how they loved Clow. The whole thing was summed up by Clow himself: Sakura is Sakura and Clow Reed is Clow Reed. But what really matters is who Yue and Kero are with right now, in the present, and that Sakura makes sure to pave a road to a future she chooses.

A very insightful episode; Clow even uses a cool analogy between the changing of seasons and the overall passage of time that leads into the beginning of the next generation. He elaborated that while it’s sad that people die like how seasons always move on and change, with the passing of time, a new “spring will always come forth; a new generation is always there to take over and make a path for itself into a future that has yet to be decided.

It was all really neat. The color-scheme given to the past was pretty nifty too. And I really enjoyed the sequence where Sakura was running through the autumn leaves. It conveyed the fleeting of Clow’s presence in the world really well.

Episode 69: Sakura meets Clow Reed

Oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh… Li totally admits that he’s in love with Sakura at the end of this one (finally)! o^_^o

I really liked how this episode went. The animation was just godly for TV too; all the action was just intense and so smoothly animated, I can’t believe some of the things they pulled off. Madhouse is awesome (again)!

In this episode, Eriol decides to cast a spell that will forever put the town of Tomoeda to sleep unless Sakura can gather all her strength and defeat his magic. There was a good amount of tension and when the solution finally came about, it was hard to accept it considering that Kero and Yue might not be able to come back anymore should Sakura fail in transforming light and dark. The best part of the conflict though was when Sakura was just about to fail, Li jumps in to save the day and they end up transforming the cards together (something I really preferred over how the manga did it)! And the music is great too when you see the light break the darkness away.

At the end of all this though, Eriol pulls a fast one over the crew and leaves without answering any questions.

Oh yeah, and Li finally comes out with it; the look on Sakura’s face is priceless.

I had a cool Cardcaptor Sakura moment today, and thought I'd share.

In my last class of the day teaching the 1nensei how to make Christmas cards, I spotted a Cardcaptor Sakura pencil sharpener near the window. This was a big one with a crank to sharpen your pencil.

It belonged to one of the female students (surprise!), and we started talking about CCS. We talked about our favourite characters and merchandise from the series (she was more than shocked to learn that her English teacher owns both of Sakura's wands).

Then we chanted Sakura's RELEASE! speach together! "Yami/Hoshi no chikara wo himeshi kagi wo..."

All in all, very cool. And as I'm leaving the school on Thursday, hopefully it gave the student good memories of me. ^_^v

Episode 68--Does RETURN allow the user to physically return to the past, or just to see it?

Episode 69--This episode was so great. Personally I think Eriol never had any intention of putting the town to sleep forever even if Sakura failed; I remember how he stopped his own avalanche in the skiing episode when Sakura failed to stop it. He probably just said that to put a sense of urgency in Sakura.

And of course, Shaoran was great, using every bit of power he has to help Sakura, and then admitting he loves her...I mean "likes" her. /images/graemlins/relief1.gif

Well... here we are at the last episode. This one wraps up some of the issues after the confrontation of Eriol, as Eriol (along with Kaho) clarify his purpose. Sakura has to deal with how to handle her response to Shaoran now that he's finally confessed.

Things aren't quite over yet, though, as the second movie provides the conclusion to the anime. The "nameless" card which Sakura receieves at the end of this episode <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>will play a role in the movie</span>.

Things aren't quite over yet, though, as the second movie provides the conclusion to the anime. The "nameless" card which Sakura receieves at the end of this episode <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>will play a role in the movie</span>.

I'm very glad the second movie exists, without it this episode would have been EXCEPTIONALLY annoying.

This drives home the plot development of recent episodes about Kero and especially Yue growing in their love and respect and dependence for Sakura. And similar to how Eriol will explain with the Cards next episode, a big part of this final task was to cement that bond of Guardian to Master, which Yue was questioning. Spinel certainly noticed it in his comment to Ruby Moon.

And I wonder for Japanese experts here... I'm guessing the equivalent of "I like you" carries slightly more weight in the language and culture than it does in English? Or is there too much reading in to that? (Movie 2 Spoilers) <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Though Sakura and Shaoran take it up a notch in language in the movie to come.</span> /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I don't think he even thought that far. I think he knew without a doubt that she would succeed. And that Shaoran would be her "bells". Or, if not...maybe he would have erased everyone's memory and started over. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have to admit, while I love the anime, I much prefer the way the manga handled things at the end of things. I always found it odd in the anime that after the main fight they all just go home and to school the next day. I felt the manga's running right over to Eriol's made a heck of a lot more sense than just waiting a day. I also much prefer how things ended with Shaoran and Sakura in the manga over the anime <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> though the whole hope card wrap up in the second movie is fun </span>.

From what I've heard (which may not be right, my knowledge of Japanese is very limited /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif), saying "love" is kind of taboo in Japanese even if you really love someone. That's which it's mainly "suki" (like) or "daisuki" (really like) that's heard.

It does play as the first act of the final story. But on it's own, on the second viewing, it is a great "final" episode beside, and it actually ties up more loose ends than the movie does.

Number of great things here that also hearken back to the whole of the series:

- Kero losing his appearance of control when sweets are in the room is our last comedic moment of the series (drop kicking a couple cupcakes into Suppie's mouth was too funny.)
- Tomoyo, of course, understands exactly what Eriol wants to keep secret. I also liked her reserved look in the classroom in the beginning in regards to how Shaoran and Sakura were acting with each other.
- The sub-plot in the third season of Yue's torn feelings towards his two masters is tied up here in an excellent scene. Yukito later on telling Touya how grateful he is on his end of the dual-existence is also nice.
- The last scene in the classroom in that minimalist style was quite cool, reminded me of something from Kare Kano a little. As a last dash of great animation the bridge meeting next scene was beautiful.
- The new Sakura card was a cool surprise. (Now secure with her abilities, it would make sense that she would start creating her own magic at some point.) Yeah, if they had ended the episode without showing what was on it, it would have been disastrous. /images/graemlins/wink.gif It still plays as a teaser for the movie, of course, but it can be guessed looking at that it represents something of true love, companionship...and all that. More in the movie.
- Wei is cool guy, eh?

And that's that. Series over.

I thought the way the anime did it was good--it gave Sakura time to process what happened and then go to Eriol when she was ready. Did Shaoran confess before or after Eriol explained everything in the manga?

I love the montage of Sakura and Shaoran at the end. My only problem with the ending was that Tomoyo kind of faded into the background in the end--she really didn't have much more importance than Rika, Naoko, and Chiharu.

Well, that, and the fact that it's the end of the TV series. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif

The grand finale for Sakura comes in movie form, and probably one of the best ways they could have ended it in my opinion. If you've watched the whole series and haven't gotten the movie yet, make sure to pick it up ASAP. I found it to be quite an enjoyable experience in addition to just being the ending, and likely will become one of the most watched movies in my collection (always have a habit of watching it both dubbed and subbed when I get around to it).

As Sakura is faced with the challenge of responding to Shaoran (which get forestalled several times in the movie, despite Tomoyo and Meilin's plotting /images/graemlins/wink.gif), Sakura is also confronted with yet another powerful magical enemy, this time a very powerful Clow Card that was created for balance but sealed away by Clow. THE NOTHING has the ability to make anything (people included) disappear into a void, and she also starts stealing Sakura's Sakura Cards. To make matters worse, Sakura learns of an awful price that must be paid in order to capture the card. The person that seals it <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>loses their feelings for the one most important to them, somewhat similarly to the "catastrophe of the Clow Cards" earlier on.</span>

I really like the last few scenes of the movie. I've watched the ending on its on at least one occassion in the past (which is pretty rare for me. I'm more inclined to watch the whole thing if I get a series or movie out to watch).

Now that we're at the end, this is now a free-for-all discussion. Hope all of you had fun with the by-episode format. It seemed to go pretty well in my opinion.

Oh, and Happy Birthday, bctaris!!! Neat that we got to the end on the same day as your birthday. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

For those of you who don't know, this is an approximately 10-min. short movie that appears an an extra on the Special Edition release of the DVD. It's kind of hidden. Just keep clicking down and you'll see it.

It involves Kero, Suppie, and takoyaki. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif A pretty fun little movie to watch (especially nice for some more Kero-Suppie interaction, which was somewhat limited in the series for obvious reasons)

The last lines of the movie are among my favorite ever.

<span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> Shaoran: Hold on! The stairs will return any minute now!

In the manga, the final battle pretty much happens the same as in the anime, including Shaoran's helping Sakura after she absorbs her guardians into the staff <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> though he collapses soon after from being drained and its her sadness over not seeing him anymore too that gives Sakura the last strength she needs to finish the task</span>.

Though the aftermath is different since the anime didn't include anything about Eriol's second reason for doing what he did. <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> Sakura's dad appears and we learn that he wasn't put to sleep with everyone else. Eriol then explains that Sakura's father is his "other self" as Clow split his soul into TWO reincarnations, one Eriol with Clow's memories, and the other Fujitaka. Eriol then asks Sakura to cast a spell on them to split his magic between the two reincarnations so that he, Eriol/Clow, will no longer be the strongest magician in the world.

After that, Eriol could no longer keep people away, so they headed to his house for the whole story. He explains that his great power had troubled him and that he hated knowing the future, so he split his soul but even he couldn't split his power, so he had to wait for Sakura to become strong enough to do that. Because she has become stronger than Clow, unlike him, she will only have the power to see the future if she wants to (i.e. she'll have the control Clow didn't).

The awesome result of the power splitting is that Fujitaka can finally see Nadesico's ghost, and that scene is just so damn sweet. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif As for Shaoran's confession, it happens the day after Eriol explained everything. In class Eriol announces he is going back to England and Sakura is sad. Eriol tells her than when someone else she knows says he is going away to think about how different the feelings she has are. Later that afternoon, Sakura asks Shaoran what it was he'd wanted to tell her (in the manga, before the final battle, he tells her he has something to say after, I can't remember if that was in the anime). He then confesses his love and heads home while poor Sakura is still standing in shock. Next day when she goes to take Li a parting gift from Mizuki she finds out he is moving back to Hong Kong. For the rest...read the manga, but I think its way sweetier than the second movie (though the second movie is fun in its own way)</span>

It would have been nice if we could have gotten the Bang Zoom! cast for the whole series. There were a few of the minor characters we didn't hear from very much in the movie, and I would have liked to hear what they had done in a somewhat more prominent role (since a few choices do strike me as a little iffy...) Just a few thoughts on those...

Johnny Yong Bosch seemed to lack the "youngness but deepness" quality that Nozomu Sasaki portrayed very well. May have been interesting to hear him in the third season vary between his friendly persona and his mischievous persona (both of which we didn't see in the second movie). Kaho barely speaks at all, though Sue Beth Arden does seem to have a natural voice for the role (kind of interesting, given that I mostly know Arden for energetic young female characters) Arden was great as Suppie, and we don't get to hear Nakuru in the second movie unfortunately (wonder who Bang Zoom would have cast for her? Maybe someone with a good high-pitched voice like Melissa Fahn or Lara Jill Miller... /images/graemlins/happy.gif)

He didn't really speak much, but I can always play Dave Lelyveld's lines as Kero through my head a lot. So darned cool, yet too little screen time here. Lelyveld's voice for Kero ended up being a bit different than I had expected (deeper, for one) but still fit him perfectly.

As for Sakura's friends, I'm a bit divided. Stevie Bloch barely talked as Rika, so it's not really worth being too critical here, but the voice would seem completely off to me if it had been in the series (Rika has more of a shy tone to her voice, while Stevie almost sounds exactly like Norma from Sugar here) Midge Mayes was probably the best cast of the three, as she conveys Chiharu's annoyance over Yamazaki's lying very effectively (BTW, Joshua Seth is PERFECT here. Enough said...). Mayes always seems to be a bit forced in roles this young, though. And lastly, Roberta Kim... ah... Several people were hoping she would be Sakura, and she ended up being Naoko /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif She seems decent, but I kind of expect a gratingly high-pitched voice like the Japanese version. It really kind of seems odd with such a sweet voice coming from Naoko. /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif

I'll probably have more to say concerning the dub (particularly the major characters) later.

Given what I had heard of Michelle in the higher register (which is generally not good, though I like some roles like Saga in Sugar), I was pretty worried how her Tomoyo would turn out. It was not as bad as I thought it would be, though, and her voice has rather grown on me. I'll admit while Junko Iwao shaped the character very well with her voice, it was sometimes overbearingly high-pitched.

Okay, today is tomorrow… Hooray (still kind of lazy).

Episode 70:

Okay, it’s the end of the series and such a nice little way to go. The main conflict in this episode dealt mainly with Sakura trying to figure out how she feels about Li. On the side, we have Eriol explaining in detail the things he’s been doing up until now. Apparently, he has been creating situations that would force Sakura into changing the cards. The changing of cards need to be given a good reason as demonstrated by the earlier episode where Sakura attempted change a lot of the cards at once. He was screwing around a bit, but in the end, it was needed to change the cards safely.

I really liked how she dwelled on her feelings a lot. It must’ve been a little weird for her up until now mainly since she only thought of Li as a friend. I mean, it’s not like he said anything until the day before. Anyway, it was confusing for her to think of him as something more than that since the idea never really came about.

The scene on the bridge was really cute. I like how Li admits to how foolish he’s been acting most of the time, only thinking of himself and not considerate towards others. Unlike Sakura who was always considerate of how others feel. But Sakura counters this by admitting that she was weak and pointed out all the good qualities Li had and how he really helped her out a lot during the series. In any case, Li has improved, but it’s nice to see him admit to his past mistakes.

Anyway, Sakura was about to give an answer (or lack of one), but Li dashes off before she can say anything.

I think the action that really sticks out here is that Li doesn’t tell Sakura that he’s leaving for Hong Kong. But when Sakura catches word of it, she suddenly realizes how she feels and rushes off to the airport (using FLY or something). I really liked the scene at the airport since they both looked so flustered; it was adorable. Oh, and the music was just great. Anyway, when Sakura finally gets there, she realizes that she’s too embarrassed to just tell him on the spot. Wei steps in and saves the day though and gives Li back that teddy he intended to leave behind. While Sakura can’t express her feelings verbally yet, she asks for the bear instead (which… kind of gets the message through… more on this later).

Hooray (boo) the series is over. Onto…

The second movie:

So… I’m kind of just gonna post my review which can be found here… contains spoilers since I look at the message:

http://www.themanime.org/viewreview.php?id=874

A few notes though about the review I wrote and everything else (wow, I ended up with a lot to say):

The thing about Kawajiri and which sequence he did was made on the basis of an assumption. But then, he does have that dynamic style. So naturally, I assumed that the final action sequence was by him… what else would they have brought him onboard for? Anyway, if you have sufficient evidence that says otherwise, feel free to put it forward since I’m interested in anything Madhouse.

The dub was pretty nifty. I would’ve gone more into detail on it in the review, but then it might get too tedious for some to read. Anyway, I really liked Johnny Yong Bosch as Eriol mainly since he could’ve just used the same voice to deliver “kid Eriol had Bang Zoom! dubbed the rest of the series. Also, if you’ve seen his role on Paranoia Agent as Yuich Taira, he has a voice that is very convincingly like a kid’s. More on this later… I’m kind of tired right now since I just spent two-three hours typing the rest of this thing up.

Okay, the thing in the review that might startle people the most is that I assume that Sakura and Li have “a tacit acknowledgment of each other's feelings. I think, from the end of the TV series, Li was already somewhat aware of it (although, still not as sure as he should be). As the movie went along, I was fairly sure he became aware of what the answer would be. The problem though is that it is eventually revealed that Sakura may have to forget about her feelings for Li because of the card’s contract to be captured (more on this later).

I like how the movie actually sort of parallels Naoko’s play to convey its wonderful message. While Li and Sakura aren’t from warring factions, the general idea is pretty much the same. There are circumstances involved in which the “princess (Sakura) cannot convey her feelings. In fact, the movie was mainly concerned with the importance of physically conveying our feelings (as pointed out in my review). It was something Sakura had her heart set on doing, but she eventually backs down and asks Li to forget about her (as shown by her by her exceptional acting in the school play… okay, it’s sort of implied, so there). “The prince (Li) even goes on to ask her if she detests him because of all the pain his feelings are causing her. While sakura, being who she is, was being considerate of Li, and even though it was tearing her up inside, she could not bring herself to admit to such a lie (like the princess). Anyway, telling him the truth about her feelings would only hurt the both of them at this point.

The final conflict with the “nothing card (or whatever name we’re going to use at this point) was very interesting in how it wrapped up. Once again, Cardcaptor Sakura (or CLAMP work in general) proves that there are no real enemies in the world (CLAMP world). Which is nice, since everything just feels more positive. The card was unjustly sealed away by Clow. It was cold and lonely, so naturally, it’d aspire to be with its friends after such a long time in the darkness. But as Sakura points out in the end, taking people (cards) away forcefully isn’t what friendship is all about.

At this point in the movie, I really liked how they showed how considerate Sakura really is about other’s feelings. When the cards abandoned “nothing and it began to weep, Sakura realized the pain it must’ve felt when it was all alone. Because of this, and with the gentle prodding of the cards, she allows to herself to convert “Nothing not on the basis of simply defeating the card and bringing everyone else back, but on the basis of allowing her to experience what it’s like to be with everyone and not feel lonely. Sakura did so even if it’s at the inevitable cost of her feelings. At the end of the hard journey though, she realizes that she now regrets not telling Li how she really feels (kind of like how the princess regrets not telling the enemy prince how she felt before he died).

Anyway, a desperate silence ensues, but the whole thing is turned around because of Sakura’s blank card merging with “nothing to produce “hope (Ha-ha!). I also think that the reason “nothing gave Sakura a chance was mainly because of how considerate she showed herself to be (as I expanded on earlier). In the end, “nothing became a friend, and not just some tool.

So, wonderful symbolic ending in which all involved (cards included) are happy… what could be better?

One might wonder why “nothing was locked away in the first place… Well, I’ll just say that Clow Reed made a mistake, plain and simple (I mean, it happens). And it’s up to the new generation to shoulder the burden of the past. As for the contract to capture… remember that it takes a lot of energy to transform cards? Well, this would be another way to get around that, so it makes sense (and it resembles the thing earlier in the series, so at least there’s a pattern). Anyway, looking into the technical aspects is weird… especially considering that this is a magic-girl show… so… we’ll leave it at that.

… Man, I’m tired, I might’ve had something else to say… but I’m fairly sure this says all of it. It was a nice 2-movie, 70-episode run, but all things must come to an end (boo, nothing is over!).

Oh yeah, the Teddy Bear kind of disappeared in the movie, but that’s okay. A lot of things disappeared during the series anyway (where’s Yukito’s watch? for example). If anything, it would’ve taken away from the blank card, so whatever.

… Unless both items were in the background and I just didn’t notice.

I’d proofread more, but now I have to head over to ANN for a Saikano debate.

I would think Nothing was sealed away by Clow because of the temptation to use something so powerful. As explained in the story, the card has to exist to counter the power of the other cards, and even combined with Sakura's new card, I wouldn't imagine that would change, though it becomes a nice way to placate the card instead of sealing it again. (Thought would "Nothing" still serve its purpose if it had "something"? /images/graemlins/wink.gif)

It probably works great if one has read the manga (which I haven't) but a lot of that is too messy compared to what the anime culled out and presented, I think. /images/graemlins/wink.gif Though that all does neatly explain the first mysteries of the story, <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>why Fujitaka would possibly have the book in the first place, why Yue was set up as Yukito before Kero had even made the selection, and even that the selection had been made out of Kero's control, years earlier with Clow's intention.</span>

Thanks for the manga summary, though. I was very curious.

Well, I should have made the following comments in one of the earlier threads, but since it shows up in every episode of the third season, I'll go ahead and make the comments here.

Is it me, or is there a lot of symbolism in the progression of the OP sequences? It seems that each slowly builds and conveys the transformation of Sakura from little girl to...well, less of a girl (I won't dare say woman as I think we would need many more seasons of CardCaptor Sakura for that! Tsubasa anyone?) During our time with our beloved Sakura she grows up before our very own eyes from age 10 to 12.

Breakdown of 3rd OP:
Sakura's 3rd OP outfit is very different from the outfits in the first two OPs as unlike those it is not completely symmetrical.

I believe this conveys a sense of duality and transition.

The right side of her leg is composed of a short lace-top hold-up stocking that gives the appearance of the standard short socks with frilly cuffs usually worn by very young girls. In contrast, the left leg is a thigh-high ultra-femme lace-top hold-up with with a very long ribbon attached to it. A very grown-up accessory in my opinion.
Obviously, Sakura has worn thigh-highs in the previous two OPs but I believe that neither were as mature and certainly did not purposely have an object (short stocking) to contrast themselves off from.

This outfit is also the first inclusion of a low cut bodice. A dress pattern typically worn by mature women but in this case respectfully covered by a very cute gold star.

Sakura's first outfit was very colored and childish while her second outfit was a bit more mature but in a tomboyish sense and was composed of an off-white top with yellow prince shorts. The 3rd OP outfit is almost bridal in appearance but is contrasted with her oversized pink petticoat to continue a sense of childness.

More important than the contrasting stockings and petticoat are her full length wings. These are the best indictor of Sakura's maturity as the previous wings have been vestigial and undeveloped. Similar to themes found in butterfly stories and anime like Utena, its significance is adolescence and its rite of freedom.

The choker is also a first and continues with a general binding theme for this outfit (a theme common place in goth-loli fashion that stresses a transitional yet overlapping and conflicting struggle between childhood and adulthood)

Aside from the very obvious growth in length for Sakura, her face is drawn a bit sharper and more oval to further signify her continued maturation. Her expressions are also filled with concern and a general feeling of angst not found in the previous two OPs which display Sakura with the general care-free expressions found in children.

Of course, we can't forget the "Platinum" theme from Maaya Sakamoto and Yoko Kanno as they bring a very adult and sophisticated feel to the OP which probably pushes the creation of the entire sequence.

I guess I probably should have started with a "Leave it to Kero!" title and a loud "Hey-hey-hoo!".

Funny how I always found Kero's breakdown of Sakura's outfits a bit creepy but I believe probably mine are coming off even creepier...since I'm not a cute plush-toy looking guardian. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

Thanks. I finally remembered to turn the notice on in my profile. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

I said last week that I was all done watching new CCS, but I did have the movie English dub left, and glad I did. More on that below.

As usual with any part of Cardcaptor Sakura that I wasn't completely sold on, the second viewing turned me around. I thought the first time that the very ending for the movie was a little rushed, and though I still don't think it's perfect, I like how it works. There's not too much to comment on otherwise, since the movie contains so many elements that we've hashed over in the series, but I do have a couple thoughts:

- It can be taken for granted that Clow had to originally seal away the Nothing card way back when. Could it be supposed that he himself had to lose his most important feeling then, too? And could it be supposed that it was feelings for Madoushi, from the first movie? Might explain how she ended up in her situation.
- Kero freaking out and going into "plush" mode when he and Yukito wake up is a good joke, but Kero did already know that Yukito knew everything already, right? /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif
- And after all these times, how's Tomoeda town going to explain what goes on here, with everyone waking up the next morning and all? Eh, but they've brushed off giant monsters and girls, meters of snow that vanishes in an instant, thousands of people mysteriously falling asleep, columns of light in the sky, etc., etc. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

And the English dub. Everyone's pretty awesome here, Kari and Michelle and Mona are a joy, Lelyveld is absurdly cool as Kerberos, but I do see what some say about Wendee Lee's Kero. It worked and I mostly liked it, but it lacked something. Hisakawa's Japanese Kero is differentiated with an Osaka accent, for one, but Lee's Kero was just an energetic kid (which works in one way because that's sort of what Kero is...) who talks like everyone else, except more annoyingly. (Lee is of course a perfect natural as Sonomi later on in the movie.)

Madellena was also too perfect as Meilin, but of the cast, I think she would have been very interesting to hear as Kero instead.

Kari Wahlgren as Sakura...this was one of her first principle roles after her debut as Haruko in FLCL, and I remember when I heard about this role that I was duly impressed by her range--Haruko and Sakura couldn't be farther apart. And there was a point when Sakura was yelling at Nothing about "taking" friends where I flashed to a certain speech from Lavie in Last Exile...who is more similar to Sakura. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Good stuff all around. And I'm enjoying some of the series-end comments cropping here, like mk2000's very cool post about clothes. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Wai!! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I love the animation style for this...though it does make for a more lolita-fied Sakura at the end there. /images/graemlins/stunned1.gif But it's reminiscent of the series endings in vibrancy and design.

In the English dub, I did actually like Wendee Lee more in this. She always had the energy down in the movie, but though we really don't see a very serious Kero in the short to compare to much, there's a slight edge to her voice here that seems to work more. And I really like Sue Beth Arden's take on Spinel. Especially how she nailed "drunk" Suppie. (LA dub for the series, who would play large Spinel? Against Arden's voice, and also compared with Lelyveld's (absurdly!) cool Kerberos, I'm thinking someone like Billingslea...)

Given that Lelyveld was much deeper than the usual voices (and he was also one that was not in the confirmed cast list provided to Dub Review), I had to run a clip by S Man to make sure it was actually him at first. I've heard some pretty deep-voiced roles from him by now (Kakashi in Naruto is a little deep for one) but I don't think any that were as much as this role. As little time as big Kero had in the movie, at least we got a comical bit near the beginning and some serious bits near the end so we could hear some range. I figured you would like Lelyveld as Kero. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

As for big Spinel, maybe Crispin Freeman. Like Lelyveld, he voices lots of younger roles but does deeper ones from time to time. I think he could make a pretty menacing Spinel voice as well. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

I'm really not crazy about this movie. It's really just an overlong TV episode with more detailed animation. THE NOTHING seems to me to be just a souped up version of ERASE. And if the card was created to be a negative force to balance the other cards, why was it ultimately the same as the other cards?

Also, the ending was too abrupt. It seems anticlimactic for 70 episodes and two movies to end just like that, with no epilogue(not that Sakura's confession wasn't good). /images/graemlins/sad.gif

THe dub was good though. I'd love to hear Kari Wahlgren as the more genki Sakura in the series, to hear Julie Maddelena as the loud, emotional, glomping Meilin of the first season.

One thing I noticed about the movie: Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention, but I can only remember one time in the whole series that Tomoyo did her ojou-sama laugh. Yet she does it no less than three times in this movie.

/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

... could be that... but then, it's still kind of cruel... hell, we could even say that maybe he wanted it to sleep... but then... it didn't o_o

If you want deep Lelyveld, far deeper than Kerberos, you have to hear Katana from Gad Guard. The man has serious range. He could even pull off a pretty humorous small Kero, I bet. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yay, Yay! My wife got me some CCS goodies for Christmas!
The CCS Illustration Collection 2 (I LOVE the art books from CLAMP)
The CCS Complete Vocal Collection.

I think I nearly died of a "Moe Heart Attack" when I saw the illustration below:

The other two links are pictures of the illustration book itself and the CD case (respectively)

Heh, cute. /images/graemlins/happy.gif Complete Vocal Collection definitely sounds nice.

I've mainly just gotten money for Christmas (with a few gifts here and there). Might have to spend some on a new CCS Movie 2 DVD (even if I get the stolen one back, I figure I could sell or give the extra copy away).

I had a CCS Christmas, too. I got the first book set and the first movie. Sometime during the week, I'll get the second set and the second movie, special edition, of course. I'm so happy /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Dang, those discs are hard to get out of those "pages." I spent a half hour trying to get them all out without damaging the discs or the disc holders. They all pop out fine now, but the initial removal was a pain.

I've already given up on keeping the label side of the discs free from fingerprints. It just ain't gonna happen. Oh well. I wish they would've put some sort of crappy silkscreen thing or something on the discs.
