The 2005 Jump Festa Anime Tour Bleach OVA might be an example of what the production team would do with Bleach without following Kubo's storyline. The OVA is the production team's original story, with Kubo only contributing the character design for the new primary antagonist.

The link has a spoilerific pic, so I'll quote:

Shinigami in high school! Yes, the arc that follows from the SS arc will be animated. BUT! Not so soon. First, the anime series will go into original scenarios, as already mentioned plenty of times on this comm. After the manga has progressed enough, the series will go back to following the story. The original scenarios will take place in the human world, not Soul Society. But, will shinigami still appear? Wait and see!
(Yes, that means that the above image is purely fan service for this article.)
Upcoming anime schedule:
12/20 ep62
12/27 break
01/03 break
01/10 one-hour special (ep 63-64) * end of SS arc
01/17 original scenario begins
Lastly, the Bleach movie is confirmed for release in December 2006. Still no further details for now

Gak.
At least when when we get to the 10th, it'll be a double episode.
It'll be interesting to see how they handle the filler eps, but if Kubo is involved in the planning, they should be good.

I was wondering what the whole filler arc could be about. I'm hoping for generic hollow battles, rampant humour, and a small dose of don kanoji.

Okay...so let me get this straight?
The pictures in the first post are from an OAV that's going to be released?
A Movie is coming out by December 2006.
The Soul Society Arc ends January 10th and the filler arc starts January 17th.
Okay.

they probsbly didn't have time to do the designs for the other three guardians. They might be busy doing new character designs for new characters for the new arcs /images/graemlins/happy.gif. It is probably a lot of trouble for just the short time they appear.

A focus on Orihime? I didn't know about the filler eps after the hour special until I watched ep 62 (great episode btw, even had me feeling a bit for Byakuya which is something I thought I'd never do!) but there's that point where someone refers to 'Hime's powers of healing.

The special is divided into two parts. One is the normal thing you'd expect to come from the B-Station series (but with Kon doing it). However in this case it was done to showcase the fights and a summative view/commentary of those fights by the characters done in a puppet-like show. In other words, a cheapened view.
The second part follows the original story's closure. Not much to say here, really.
However, the real treat comes with the preview for the next arc. It's a filler arc, but it does look highly budgetted so we'll be getting some quality stories (hopefully). Plus, Orihime DOES look like she's playing a large role.

Kenny is actually an appropriate adaptation for Ken-Chan. VIZ's Jump titles don't carry over honorifics, and since -chan usually carries a familiarity, or cute nickname with it, calling him Kenny is a very good translation. My co-workers might call me Ken, but my girlfriend calls me Kenny.

Isn't Kubo Tite supervising the story for this filler arc, along with the new character designs? That alone should ensure a smooth integration when the main story starts back up again.
Part of me does wish that the anime side had taken things a wee bit slower, but their planning had probably included a filler arc early on.

Although they didn't really show them in action, the trap that they lay and the gate similar to the gate to Hell show that they have spiritual powers... I don't think they are human.
It looks like this arc is the save Orihime arc. Basically, everyone's back to school and Renji is made the "tanto" or the shinigami in charge of the Karakura area. Orihime is down about not being any use in their jaunt to Soul Society, which leads to her abduction.
The art quality didn't seem up to par; everyone looked kinda elongated or mishapen a bit. There were a few LOL moments (usually involving Kon). I think this arc shows some promise, though, and should be a good filler till they finish the current manga arc.
Also, there seems to be a funky new ending song/animation... but I'm not sure if it was introduced in the last episode because I didn't realize it was an hour long special and I only recorded half of it... /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

Is this OVA the basis for the new PS2 game? I looked at the coverart, and it features an character not disimilar to the bad guy of the OVA.

Have you noticed that most of the characters have now a shadow under the chin? This has been going on for the last 10 episodes or so, did they change animation studio or something? The real young characters don't have the shadow tough, even Orihime doesn't have it.

Off topic but I couldn't help to comment.
That is a sweet Avatar rogueman! I think I watched that episode like more than 10 times for that scene. Too bad the boy chickened out when Motoko offered him a taste.

Once the JF-AT wraps up, it'll be released on DVD. People have been guess-timating June-ish. Currently, the only way to see it is to go to a JF-AT location. They're very diligent about searching for recording devices.

I think you're confusing this OVA with the first OVA that covered the Memories in teh Rain storyline from the manga. The OVA they're talking about is a completely original story staring Ichigo, Renji and Hitsugaya, IIRC.

I finally got a look at the new episode and I'm pleasantly surprised so far. It seems this filler arc could deal with the hell side of the afterlife, considering the gate that Orihime was taken away with. This is certainly interesting enough. The only downside to it (if it really is a hell arc) is that the chances of hell playing an important part in the manga are greatly reduced, since Kubo must have greenlighted this to not contradict future developments. Renji in the real world is hillarious. Especially the "freeloader" and "demotion" scenes were great. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif One thing that looked especially cool animated to me was whenever Ichigo entered/reentered his body. Nice visuals. Sadly enough Orihime on the other hand didn't get much animation love IMO. More often than not she looked rather odd, compared to the other characters (build, facial features). No opinion on the new villains yet, since they haven't done much. As for the new ending, I think it's great. I like the song and the animation to go along with it is entertaining. Those...things look like something that Rukia would have come up with. /images/graemlins/happy.gif One thing that struck me was how nicely choreographed it was to the music, like the chorus of the 3 Rukiamons singing or the cute "villainess" counting to 3.

I don't think it's hell though. Renji says, "It's not a hell's gate..." although it may look similar to one. It's probably some other dimension.

The animation so far does leave much to be desired. I'm hoping that they're skimping on these episodes so when it goes back to the manga storyline it'll look fantastic.
I really don't think it'll be too much trouble transtitioning from the filler into the manga story again since the only real thing they've really changed is Renji. Everything else is still more or less in line for the manga storyline.

I thought the animation or art quality on this episode was better than the previous episode (although there was one scene when one of Ichigo's eyeball was looking up and the other looking down @_@). The quality may not be so great because the animators have to create original artwork instead of having great Kubo manga images to base things on.
I feel confident also that this arc shouldn't disturb things too much, and they'll be able to smoothly transition on to the next manga storyline.
As for this episode itself, the interactions between Renji and Ichigo were funny as hell.
And at last we have names: Kurouda (the blondie with the hat) and Nova (the red head whose head is mostly hidden) and Ririn (I think... for the little girl). They also have mysterious powers, as they seem to be able to teleport or appear/disappear at will (unless they were just illusions).

The guys over at bleach7 have reported that the filler will end with episode 69. I myself thought they'd be making it run quite a bit longer to be honest.
Anyway, if you look at the episode titles, it makes a lot of sense, with episode 70 being a definite manga title episode.

Well that sucks. Considering that they even made a custom ending just for the new villains, I was hoping they'd at least get 12 or 13 episodes at least. I was really hoping they'd be exploring more of the 'Hell'-aspect of Bleach, at the same time, flesh out the new villains...

I don't think it will be the end of the filler, since in the ED there are two groups of villians and we've only been introduced to the first one. I think in ep 70 they'll just bring Rukia in to join Renji. Since it makes no sense to say the rest of the shinigami coming is a 'revival of the team acting as agents', 'cuase none of them were 'agents' of anything before. I think that last part probably is for the villians of this arc.

So...does the manga explain things better than the anime?
I dunno...the pacing is usually pretty good, but from about episode 54 till the end of the Soul Society arc, it just felt waaaaaaay too fast.
-What was the point of the Genryuusai/Shunsui/Jyuushiro "fight?" Was it just so we could see the transformation sequence, and the subsequent release of the 3 Zanpaktous...is there actually a fight in the manga?
-Do we get an actual fight between
Kira and Matsumoto?, and do we actually get to see her zanpaktou in action?
-Is it ever explained why Aizen is so damn powerful? It can't be entirely because of his zanpaktou. I understand that he will become powerful after taking the Hougyoku out of Rukia...but that doesn't exactly explain why he's dominanting everyone in the meantime.
-Jidanbou and Kuukaku seem to just pop out of nowhere...is this explained?

The anime mimic the Manga quite well actually, everything that was seen was drawned, even the pacing.
To answer your questions to the best of my ability,
1. Its basically to show off their blades and the relationship between the 3 captains.
2. We do not see Kira's and Matsumoto's fight right after she releases her shikai. This is also the same for the manga. It cuts off when she releases it then comes back after she finish beating him.
3. Aizen is a mystery. His shikai is quite powerful and since he is a captain level, he does not have ot say the sword's name inorder to release the shikai so I'm assuming he's using it without anyone realizing he is. Another point, since he's been captain for quite along time compared to the others he fought (etc: Hitsugaya or VC like Renji) so there could be a power difference due to experience. Another point, all besides Hitsugaya were not at full strength, all injured/tired from their previous fight.
4. Jidanbou and Kuukaku event was not done well in the anime actually. This part they rushed to the extend that scenes were not included. Basicaly in the earlier episode, Kuukaku visits Jidanbou in the house and says she wants to pay back the "bitch" refering to nekko-chan ,lol. THis implies they went inside to stop the execution or help. What wasn't animated was the fight between Jidanbou vs. the other 3 gatekeepers.
Hope that helped.
I felt there is no need for spoiler tags since its these events have already but who knows...add if need be mods, lol.

Which was pretty much over in a page and a half in the manga. It introduces the other three gatekeepers, and they get immediately taken out by Jidanbou, who is upset that his friends have joined Aizen's cause.
After I saw the manga, it was no longer such a big deal. Perhaps it will be added/expanded in the DVD version? They gotta have sonething extra to sell shiny discs.

I think the best thing about this new arc is the ED song.

I'm beginnig to think this filler arc was created for the fanservice alone. But if they finish up this filler arc we'll still have at least one more to go through before we return to the manga story.
[/ QUOTE ]
Well, looking at the names of the next few episodes it's either gonna follow the manga for a bit to get the gang together, and then goto filler again, or it's going to diverge massively.

More likely the former, as we haven't even seen the other two (or 3?) characters shown in the ED. Plus, they can't just suddenly switch back to the manga's timeline. The conditions haven't been met yet (unlike Naruto's first huge filler session).

well these sets of episodes ends the current arc and starts a new one... gosh I swore I saw this arc before in YYH. :p
Anyway Rukia comes back at the end and they find out about Ishida being all limp now... so I guess Bleach is gonna pull a FMA and go to all new original materials now? Its taking a pretty big detour from the manga.
I guess once they finish this new arc of soul sucking vampires they started, they could go back to manga source or even more filler for a full season of filler before back to manga source... if they go back that is.

No, I think it's pretty much been guarunteed that after the filler they'll go back to the manga story arc. I think they're just taking little things from the current manga arc and putting them in the filler to help make the transition back to the manga story arc a little smoother.
I loved the Shinigmai Cup Golden extras this week. Poor Soi Fong missed her chance with Yoruichi and Ukitake is a little late with a Christmas stocking for Shiro-chan. XP

I actually like the filler arcs so far. For filler it sure is satisfying. I really wish the secondary characters would get a bit more into the act though. Not a complaint, just a wish. I think it'd be nice to see Sado and Inoue kick a little butt.
I don't see why people are complaining that this isn't as good as the real stuff...it can't be. The anime guys have to write a story that leaves the characters in the same position that they started in...otherwise they'll screw up the future arcs that come from the manga. Under those constraints it's nearly impossible to make something better. More powerful characters. Can't do that. Profound changes in their relationships. Can't do that. Plot twists that make you rethink everything that came before. Can't do that either...

Same sentiment here, as I'm really enjoying this filler. But if any, I was looking forward more to some altercation between Ichigo&co and Urahara's puppet crew before they revealed something like this.

so what items are they taking form the manga and putting in the fillers?

It is going to take a full Year for the enemy to get ready to strike. So probably Rika is going to show for a while and then go back. she will reappear for the continuation of the manga. I take it from the overwhelming response in this thread, people are loving the current story.
Anyway, the most noteworthy thing at the moment is the fantastic new OP that's been produced. Apart from the song, the intro brings back some of the style that's been missing from the OPs since the first one, and finally is reminisent of the manga covers again. Ironic, since the anime is completely different in tone at moment to the manga, but that's neither here nor there.
Although the writers do seem to be doing everything in there power not to directly contradict the manga, bless 'em. Such as the shinigami with the Bount worked under one of the people Kenpachi killed, but they're not revealing who that was because he may turn up later in the manga, but freely showing this guy.

Intrestingly, I find the Arrancar in the current manga arc quite boring. Although the anime story does have it's problems, namely the rubbish mod-souls, and the dull design of the Bounts' dolls. I quite like the way this arc is going though, and in terms of filler, it could be far worse.

Im not finding the current Bleach episodes too bad. The enemies seem to be a bit dull but hopefully things will get a bit more intense soon rather than the, we have to hold them off while Ishida runs away, forumla.
Still I get to see more of Abarai Renji and I just love that guy, his hair is awesome and his attitude towards Ichigo is cool too!

Awesome ep overall. First off, a slight change in the OP. In the last episode, we got a variation of this shot (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v293/marsh-/Random%20Pics/heist.jpg) from the manga, but with just Orihime solo. This episode, it's just Renji. As for the ep itself, it starts off with Ichinose vs. Ichigo which was a nice one. I think Ichinose has one of the better shikai abilities. After the fight, it goes into his past and how he met Kariya. Kariya then takes over fighting Ichigo and whups his ass. Ururu and Ginta show up and assault the mansion, meanwhile Rukia, Ririn and co. go to save Ishida, who doesn't want to leave without rescuing Yoshino (I wonder why /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif). Our favorite "cat girl" steps in to save Ichigo and the ep ends with the Baunt watching the mansion burn.
Also, about the new ED...I like the shots of the girls, and then the group female shot at the end...but what's up with the horrible purple disco outfits that the guys are wearing in the beginning??

Bleach fillers are not having the best fan reception right now (except the ubber cool episode 33 /images/graemlins/happy.gif ). That's why they're rushing all of the filler episodes into 2 episode-specials so as to get back on the manga track. If you ask me, I like what I'm seeing, save for the inconsistent artwork, and extreme YYH-parallels.

If any, the second OAV also takes a heavy nod to YYH's own [sucky] OAV.
Also for why Ichigo's being sucky at the moment, do remember where he is right now: our (dimensional) plane - Earth. Fighting in SS and fighting on Earth can produce two different results. For one, don't expect to have a quick recovery, or amplified power when you're on Earth. For further information, see Mayuri's reference during his battle against a decked out Ishida. This is one of the reasons why Ichigo can't perform his Ban Kai (which is the one you guys are mostly expecting).

They should send Kenpachi as I presume this is more of the 11th Division's concerns. Of course, if they do send him in, I can only imagine the hilarity (to some extent) of him & Yachiru being lost all over town again. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
Well the filler is finally starting to get interesting for me and it looks like the battles before the end boss has officially begun. The new DVD that came out last week is labeled Bount Series 1 though, which I'm hoping doesn't mean it's going to end up being two seasons worth of filler. /images/graemlins/relief1.gif

I know how you feel. The story's quite interesting and enjoyable, but it doesn't really stand well for the long term. Not the manga's a hell of a lot better at the moment. In fact, if the character designs were better, and the story had been more throughly thought out, I'd say it would be better than manga's current dullness.
It is a little worrying though, that someone mentions that it'll take Aizen a year to do anything with the stone thing. Considering it wasn't mentioned in the manga, I choose to take that as a literal time scale.

Just to add a few things, I liked this week's variation to the OP animation, featuring Matsumoto in a red dress. Also, Ururu should be Rukia's little sister as they look similar to me (so cute). Lastly, the clips after the end of the episodes continue to be a treat. I would soooo watch a spinoff series of Bleach featuring the everyday life of Yachiru.

For an 11th Division-related issue, there is a surprising lack of Kenpachi and Yachiru in this filler arc.
And the battles begin with very spotty animation. This time it's focus on the fight Rukia and Orihime are in as well as finishing up the battle Ichigo was in. It's really nice being able to see characters like Kira and Shuuhei actually fight for a change since they weren't shown doing much of that in the SS arc.
These two episodes were rather amusing partly for the MST3K value of this filler and because of the little bits of fanservice they threw in. Next weeks episode looks entertaining as Ran joins up with Chad to fight the villian he's up against. So as long as they don't go back to focusing on the villians again I think I get back to kinda enjoying the filler again.

I agree that I liked seeing more of the SS crew in these two, especially Rukia in her shinigami version.
However, I disagree with you when you say that if they go back to focusing on the villains, it'll make it weak. I really like quite a few of the villains, and their personalitites as well as backstories are what intrigue me.
Ichinose is pretty damn cool, and I look forward to seeing how they end his storyline in the filler; wonder if he'll face off with Zaraki, or die realising that Zaraki isn't that bad...??

i can't wait for this game <it has at least 33 characters> with most of the capt, and vice capt.
it will definately be worth the price to import it.
I liked the character interactions in this episode, espceially since it focused on two characters that haven't had a lot of screen time yet, Chad and Rangiku. Also like the fact Nova wasn't completely useless like the other mod souls have been in the other battles.
It's a pity there seems to be a break next week, as I want to see the continuation and most likely end of the battle soon, even though I have the feeling it'll end like the other battles did. But I guess if they didn't do so they wouldn't be able to stretch the filler out, as I'm more than certain now it's going to probably be about 40 episodes long.
