I chose everything but horror and sports.

While there are some anime that might be classified as "horror" that I like (Miyu, Jigoku Shoujo), they tend not to really fall in the definition I personally have of "horror".

Mystery I was iffy on, but unless it explicitly means detective stuff (not that I dislike that), then I consider it a secondary element that shows up in a lot of shows as one part of a whole, such as in Lain or Zettai Shounen. So, I picked it.

As for missing genres... well, I was going to say something like "mahou shoujo" or whatnot, but that is probably too specific relative to something like "action". So I think it's good you decided to do all generic categories rather than try to be exhaustive with all the ones we consider not *unique* to, but very representative of, anime.

I like just about anything as long as it has some degree of drama or romance. So I guess drama and romance for me.

And I don't mean the cheesy stuff like Fushigi Yugi or Marmalade Boy... more like the stuff you find in RahXephon, Berserk, Blue Gender, Maison Ikkoku, Video Girl Ai, and so on.

Well, romantic comedies are definitely my favorites, so those get my votes. Yaoi is an obvious one for me not in the poll, so that also. Plus, the occasional sci-fi and mystery series is good. Especially detective shows, like Spiral, Conan, and Tantei Gakuen Q...

I'll give anything in anime a try, regardless of genre and I have favorites in all of those series, but I suppose the action, sci-fi, and comedy have some of my favorites. I feel bad since there really isn't any genre I'd turn down.

Pretty much everything but sports.

I haven't voted yet because I'm not sure what to vote for. Yeah I know I have many choices, but it's a case of I never really thought much about it. However I am definitely not into sports anime myself and not much into horror. Especially if the horror is in reality a gore fest. Although I do tend to be fond of Magical Girl, but as you say that may be a bit too specific. Still some would say that some of the better series can fall under multiple genres.

Action and drama are what get me the most excited, I guess. So that's what I voted for. It was hard to narrow it down, because I like sci-fi, fantasy, adventure, etc. as well. But after thinking about it, I came to the conclusion that I prefer, say, fantasy with action and/or drama to pure comedy fantasy. Thus, that's what it came down to for me.

You didn't have Steampunk listed so I chose Fantasy instead. I suppose steampunk is a sub-genre of fantasy though. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Wouldn't that vary by show though? I think sci-fi first when I think "steampunk", although it depends on the setting.

I'm personally a big mecha and sci-fi fan.

I always try to put 'Girls with Guns' into it's own genre, but I guess that fit's the action genre. For the rest I like comedy, mystery (I put Gilgamesh in that catagory) Sci-Fi (I'll lump that in with mecha) Drama and adventure.

I would probably say a mix of action, comedy, and fantasy. I try to explore other genres if the premise sounds pleasing.

In order of preference:
Science Fiction
Drama
Sports
Mystery
Action

I think that mahou shoujo is a genre, or at least it should be, and it would get my vote.
However, mahou shoujo does combine action, comedy, and fantasy so I just voted for them. I do like each of them, and science-fiction, as genres.

I chose Drama and Romance, I've always like them, but i find now that I am single and lonley I watch them a lot more.

I chose every option except horror, and the only reason why I didn't choose horror is because I saw only one anime series that can be classified as horror - Elfen Lied. I'm not that big of a horror fan, but I will watch anime that has some horror elements in it. I'm pretty open to just about anything as long as I can connect to the characters, and the characters are entertaining/interesting enough to keep me interested.

Another genre that I like that wasn't listed on the poll - Suspense.

Slice of life, hands down. I love shows like Honey and Clover, Kamichu!, Emma and so on. They're a nice break from the Mecha, Action, or sci-fi shows that I usually watch. Most of the the time they have great plots, and the characters are funny. I guess I like the genre because most shows are done with attention to detail(have you seen Kamichu's backgrounds?)

Well, then you have to include yaoi, bl, yuri, shoujo ai, mecha, sentai, harem, etc. This way of keeping it to general categories is easier, I think.

I'm very big on fantasy and romance. Drama is OK, as is comedy. I really don't like horror or sports stuff that much.

Comedy, fantasy and drama are usually what I tend to like mostly.

Drama, comedy and good science fiction, splashed with a little well-scripted romance.

I would give anything a try and try not to lump myself into one category but I am a sucker for long Shonen action/adventure series like Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Fullmetal Alchemist, Inuyasha etc and of course sports stuff like Eyeshield 21, Initial D, Prince of Tennis and so on.

12-23-2005, 07:26 AM
My favourite genre is definitely shoujo. Within shoujo, I like mahou shoujo (like Sailormoon and Cardcaptor Sakura), boys' love (both hardcore and non-hardcore), and drama (like Hana Yori Dango and Twelve Kingdoms).

Science Fiction, drama then comedy.
A show that works all three together well is pure gold.

I voted for them all, since I do love them all, but more specifically it would be comedy/anything, and girls w/Guns. Which may not be a genre unto itself, but for me it might as well be. /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

My personal tastes in anime are hard to narrow down.

I guess I can enjoy a little of everything, but I'm primarily a sci-fi/fantasy fan. Although,... I do have a penchant for the romance and romance/comedy anime.

 I suppose my ideal anime would be a sci-fi/fantasy/romance/comedy/drama

I picked comedy, mainly because many of the shows I like have a good comedy element to them. I don't think I've actually been into shows that are pure comedy that much, though, so I like when they're mixed with other elements (mahou shoujo, slice-of-life, and romantic elements are usually very good as far as I'm concerned).

I voted all. My top 10 list consist of atleast one of each of those genre. I'm just an anime addict.

Although, if mecha or fanservice was a genre I would not vote for them. I will occasionaly watch those but they aren't favorites.

Comedy, Fantasy, and Romance. Although I've seen good shows in each of those categories except horror(I'm too much of a wimp to like horror /images/graemlins/shy10000.gif), and mystery(there aren't too many mystery animes out there).

I voted for Action, Adventure, Comedy and Sci-fi

and you missed the Giant Robot/Mecha Genre that is by far my absolute favorite

12-30-2005, 08:07 AM
This is very difficult because the story genres are mostly ones i'll check out regardless. My main thing is comedic fanservice. If a series makes that the main selling point the show, I'm not going to like it. Over the top dreck just irritates me now... and has for some time come to think of it. Remove that element, and any show can be fair game for me.

BTW, surprised there's no 'mecha' or 'martial arts' categories. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

In no particular order of importance :

- comedy (Jungle Guu, school Rumble, Karin...)
- 'classic' adventure (Nadia, Patapata hikosen no boken, Takarajima)
- fantasy (Twelve kingdoms)
- horror (Boogiepop, Requiem from the darkness)
- drama (Glass no kamen)

But I would give most animes a try regardless of their genre, if the premises are interesting enough.
