First & foremost, Spoilers are quite welcome here, in fact, I insist /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Noticing all the Matsumoto talk that's been going on, and skimming through here & there with various posts, I caught the link leading to the Queen Millenia movie, which I just recently ordered & watched. Only problem being I can only pick out a couple words here & there (since the only Japanese I know I've learned from watching anime), and certain important parts of the story were lost on me.

I'm familiar with the basic story of Yayoi from reading bits over the years, and of course seeing Galaxy Express & Maetel Legend, so I easily got the parts about why La Maetal was attacking Earth (since it had lost its own orbit, and the only chance left to save the planet being to knock Earth out of the way), and I know that there's a Sennen Joo every 1000 years to keep an eye on Earth, prep it for the eventual takover/knocking out of the way, and the walkway of green floating lights & various bodies were clearly those queens, but one thing I didn't get is whether they were all previous hosts for the same woman, or each invididual people (though I'm guessing there were all individuals since they all came to Earth's aid). Also, who was the floating midget with the halo's, and what was her deal? And most importantly, did Yayoi really die at the end? if so, was she a different prometheum than the one that would eventually become Queen Andromeda Prometheum of the Machine Empire?

And was the power that gave Yayoi long life specifically explained? Or at least explained in such a way that it would explain Maetel's long life (perhaps inheriting that power)? I'm also curious as to whether or not the TV series ended in the same way (Yayoi dying). I know many of Matsumoto's series & movies don't fit together 100%, and that's part of his charm, but it would help in my understanding of Prometheum's origins to know whether or not she is one & the same as the character here.

You mean the other queens appearing in the later half of the movie? Those were all "individual queens" from Rametal, namely Himiko, Yang Kwei Fei, Cleopatra.

Ralera? She´s the Seijou (Holy Queen) of Rametal. She appeared in the original manga, TV series and movie, however differently in each (though the movie adapts the original designs by Matsumoto for the manga faithfully...the TV series had her quite differently in terms of appearance). In the TV series, she appeared as mother of Yayoi. In the movie she appears as the cold-hearted leader of her planet (up to a point you could say she was quite cold-hearted in the TV series as well). IIRC the manga (haven´t completely read it because I just own the second Wide Ban and never got around buying the first one ^_^") as well as the movie did not mention her being the mother of Yayoi, just the leader of Rametal and an eternal being that lived for many thousand years.

Well again, different incarnations and different endings. The following contains heavy spoilers for TV series and mangaIn the TV series, Yayoi sacrificed herself at the end, to save Rametal and the Earth from destruction. In the manga however Yayoi did not die at the end. As mentioned in other threads before, the TV series and the movie are pretty different from Matsumoto´s original manga. The TV series was made at a time when only half of the manga has been written by Matsumoto, so that´s why I think it´s that different in terms of story near the later half. While the movie has been made when Matsumoto already finished the Sennen Joô manga, it featured a LOT story that could not be covered by the limited length of a movie (and IMO they tried really hard to stay somewhat faithful to the manga and yet not make it appear to "crammed" and yet telling a completed story). The movie features several characters from the manga (i.e. Ralera faithfully adapted in terms of chara designs, Dr. Fara, etc.).

so far

Cool. Thanks for the help. Now if we could get some magical futuristic technology that automatically creates subtitles for any language. Aside of course from DVDsub software, I hate watching DVD's on my computer, and doubt there's a translation for this movie or the series.
