Apart from Evangelion & Gunbuster, which other anime titles have had a 2nd, improved, release on DVD in Japan?

Urusei Yatsura movies 1,3,4,5,6 were all remastered and re-released by Kitty Films. There was the Giant Robo Premium Remastered Edition that came out last year. I'm not sure what was improved but it had LPCM audio and I believe the original box didn't. Wicked City and Cyber City Oedo 808 were recently remastered and re-released by Geneon. That's about all I can think of at the moment.

Anyone ever order that can give out any info about it. Next month I was planning on ordering but wanted to make sure it was worth the buy.

I have both the old and the new R2 of Roujin Z. The new one is 16:9 downconverted from a new HD transfer. It looks good, but considering that the animation isn't as detailed as most of Ootomo's other movies, it probably won't blow your mind or anything... still, no complaints. Definitely the release to get if you want the movie. No subtitles though, but there are some scripts for it at ScriptClub...

CCS TV also had a remastered re-release. Nadesico TV will also be (has been?) re-released. Wasn't there something about the Rayearth TV series as well, or did I dream that up? Also, some of the MOE TV series have had multiple versions released with different audio options. And then there's the multiple versions of Akira, and the box set containing the Utena, Nadesico and Cyber Team in Akihabara movies. There are more...

Cowboy Bebop: Originally in DD Stereo, there is now a DD 5.1 audio box.

I think there were a few additional extras as well, such as staff and cast commentaries, which made it over to R1 along with a lot of the extras.

Okay. I have the old CPM release and suffice it to say that I'm less than impressed with the quality so this sounds good.

No you didn't dream that up. It was remastered earlier in the year for a new Memorial box and is now being re-released in singles. This has reminded me that I need to buy it.

I'm hoping for an Utena remaster as it hits it's 10th anniversary myself.

Rurouni Kenshin the Movie "Ishinshishi no Requiem"

Perfect Blue.

Steel Angel Kurumi volumes 1-6.
Remastered. Now has LCPM audio.

I can't comment on Kurumi as I haven't watched the new DVD version, but you definitely can't go wrong with the Kenshin movie and Perfect Blue. Very high quality and nice packaging too.

I believe all of the Rondo Robe Selection discs are re-authored onto dual-layer discs and have any English dubs removed so they shouldn't have the compression issues that plagued many of Pioneer's early DVDs.

I don't think they have any on-disc extras either, as I just got the 1st Pretty Sammy TV box and none of the extras are present on it, but perhaps they'll be on the 2nd box. Anyone know for sure if any of the Rondo Robe Selection discs/box sets have extras?

I will be anxiously awaiting your review on this once you get your hands on it. *sparkling eyes*

Wow...I just finished looking at the DVD cover art for the singles you talked about. Being the Rayearth hardcore fan I am, I can easily tell it's brand new art. Hikaru looks so lovely on volume 1 with that white outfit, but she never used it in the story.

Pay attention to the pink strips that surround and connect her with Mokona. There's a huge meaning implied in that picture. Most likely that Hikaru turned into some kind of deity, just like Mokona.

Now if they only added some more animation to each episode or remade some scenes to make the show look even more vibrant. Ahh...dreaming is nice.

I completely forgot about this. Yes the re-released version by Geneon was utterly beautiful. Manga's overly bright, badly contrasted, badly colored, composite artifacted riddled, overly edge enhanced, blocky at times, non-anamorphic transfer pales in comparison. The only disappointing thing about the R2 is that it is interlaced, but it has a clean 3:2 pattern so its easily IVTCed. I reauthored my disc so it now has subs and is progressive. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Answering my own question here...

I asked a Gamers employee, and it looks like the Rondo Robe Selection discs/boxes don't include on-disc extras. Oh well, I already have the LDs of the series I'm buying so I already have the extras, and it doesn't look like remastered versions of things like Tenchi Muyo TV will be coming out anytime soon, so I'll continue to buy them.

Gundam 0083 is being re-released with 5.1 audio (from another post I made).

I guess the LE DTS versions of AMG movie, YUA movie & Steel Angel Kurumi 2 count as all had standard versions as well.

How? The LE versions weren't re-releases of an original version, the two versions were released simultaneously (at least in the case of AMG and YUA movie have no clue about Kurumi).

The R3 version of Perfect Blue also looks really good (not sure if it's progressive) and has English subs to boot.

IIRC, the Patlabor movies were also re-released with upgraded sound.

I have this box (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=KIBA-9979) which contains remastered versions of the Nadesico movie, Utena movie and Cyber team in Akihabara moive. Also, the complete Nadesico series will be rereleased next year for a hefty pricetag. Look for yourself. (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=KIBA-91311)

No they weren't. The re-release was only a priced-down reissue of the same discs. There is no difference between the '99 DVD release and the re-release from 2004.

How good are the Perfect Blue subs compared to Manga's?
