It's almost year-end. Lots of '04 series ended, '05 series started and ended, and '05 series still going.

Looking back at year-2005, what is/are the best anime that you'd watched? It can be R1 or R2 or whatever, finished and/or still going.

Mine are as follows:

best harem = tie between Ichigo 100% and Shuffle TV

best shoujo = Honey and Clover

best action = Ghost in the Shell-SAC: 2nd Gig

best comedy = School Rumble

best ecchi loli-series = UG Ultimate Girl

best newly started series = I''s Pure

best Region-1 release that's completed = Jubei Chan 2

worst anime of 2005 = Da Capo Second Season

and finally...

best anime of all of 2005 to me = Air-TV and Air Movie

I was gonna ask for the single best character of 2005, but I decided not to. It's alot more tougher to decide who the single best anime-character of 2005 is. I have Misuzu (Air), Shinobu (Honey&Clover), Nishino/Toujou/Satsuki (ichigo 100%), Eri/Yakumo (School Rumble), and Tama-nee (ToHeart-2) all up there in my list. And my favorite, Hazuki (Moon Phase) still has one more dvd-only ep that'll out in 2006, so she's disqualified. *sigh* /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif

So, what're your's?

Here's to looking forward to 2006's anime!!! /images/graemlins/cool.gif

Best show released this year in R1: Gunslinger Girl, by a country mile. I've probably blotted the worst from memory out of self-preservation.

Heh that's all for now. I probably should double check and see what series I love count as being aired in 2005 or well being released in 2005. Plus I think I need a refresher course on some anime from 2005. As for favorite characters and least favorite stuff maybe in an edit or later post. Although I'm more likely to do favorite characters than least favorite stuff.

Edit: I hate it when you people remind me of series I forgot.

1 - Best anime to hit DVD in 2005 - Scrapped Princess (duh). The runner-up is Stellvia.

2 - Best anime to air in 2005 - I don't know. There were many great shows but no single show *that started in 2005* rose above them all to be THE best.

It's a problem when shows span 2004-2005 almost perfectly, like My~HiME which ran six months, split evenly between the two years. School Rumble has the same problem, as does Tsukuyomi ~Moon Phase and Bleach, except that isn't stopping any time soon so most of its episodes so far aired in 2005. Gankutsuou also made the split, although I fell away from it before the last couple episodes from being very busy and then it getting licensed. I am very eager to see it through this time as I collect the DVDs.

So, the best show to see at least half its episodes air in 2005 is My~HiME. But the best show to begin in 2005... is... well:

- When all is said and done it could be My~Otome, given its strong start and the success of HiME, but I've seen less than half of it at this point, and can not give it the prize.
- Zettai Shounen is in the running, but I have to get around to the last four episodes before I can say. It certainly has a wonderful atmosphere about it, although the second half hasn't pulled me like the first half, else I would have gobbled up the last few episodes ASAP. Still an 'A' grade show though easily.
- Honey and Clover wins for best shoujo or romance, although Futakoi Alternative takes best single relationship (or in its case, threesome).
- AIR was also one of the strongest shows overall, although not for any specific category, just as a whole. I supose it stands next to Zettai Shounen in building up a great world by sheer weight of the atmosphere around it. The 994AD arc and its Air in Summer extension also has me begging for more.
- Mahoraba was perhaps the best comedy and easily the best "feel-good" show.
- Bleach deserves a mention as stated above, especially since it began right when HiME, Gankutsuou, SR and TMP did (...uh, wow, might we say that was one of the best single seasons for anime ever?)

So.. I can't pick one that *started* in 2005 /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

Now then to get it out of the way. The letdown of 2005 was definitely Jinki Extend. Yes anime like Koi Koi 7 is in fact worse. However Koi Koi 7 was terrible from the start which begs the question. Why am I watching it? Am I into train wrecks or something? However Jinki Extend started with potential and ruined it. It's not fair. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif

Favorite Characters Aired in 2005
Pani Poni Dash: Sayaka Suzuki, Akane Serizawa, Otome Akiyama, Hibiki Watanuki and Behoimi.

Happy 7 the TV Manga: Mimi Masuko, Kokuanten, Kiku Sarasugawa, and Kuriya Kuroda

Akahori Love Hour GE: Maike Hokke, Yuko Hokke, and Aimi.

My~Otome: Arika and Mashiro (So far)

My~HiME: Alyssa Searrs, Mashiro Kazahana, Shiho Munakata, Mikoto Minagi

Mahoraba Heartful Days: Miharu, Tamami, and Sayako. (I need a refresher coure)

Shakugan no Shana: Shana.

Shuffle: Asa and Primula

Tsukiyomi Moon Phase: Hazuki and Art.

Ichigo Mashimaro: Anna Coppola and err probably all of the other girls. However mostly Anna.

Favorite Characters R1
Shrine of the Morning Mist: Chika Yurikusa, Seiko Rikiishi, and Shizuka Midoh

Bottle Fairy: Sarara and Chiriri

Scrapped Princess: Zepheris, Senes, and Shanon.

Disclaimer: It's hard to decide a cut off point for favorite character sometimes. If a character is not included it does not mean I hate her or him. Also I don't automatically hate someone just because they are capable of emotion and flaws.

The two series that have really impressed me on R1 in 2005 are Fullmetal Alchemist and Samurai Champloo.
And of course Fighting Spirit which I started at the start of the year.

On R2/fansub, the best for me was definitely Bleach.

The best show released in R1 this year was definitely Gunslinger Girl. Lots of emotional highs and lows, a thoughtful plot, a fantastic opening song and the perfect episode count, coupled with a great-looking box and banner, plus a three-disc release. Almost perfect, save for a dub that could have been retouched less (my opinion on volume three's antics pending), and a box that would only accept three Scanavo cases as a decent fit. Hey, there was even a Fuchizaki Yuriko cameo in this one!

Worst show: probably Fight! Iczer One. At least Avenger had a few interesting pieces of music, a neat male character, a decent dub and an great LE initial release.

Still being released, but definitely of a different, high quality: Princess Tutu, Kodocha no Omocha and Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo. I want to add Patlabor too, but I'm not quite finished with everything released for it this year. Stellar comedy, mech action and characters in that one.

Edit: Oh...I believe I may have to put Neon Genesis Evangelion slightly ahead of Gunslinger Girl, as I saw the latter three volumes of the Platinum release, plus the final movie this year (which I collectively enjoyed and got more out of than GG). Excellent show, with great characters, stellar acting by some of the top seiyuu in the business, and a lot of food for thought.

Best Ending Animation: Happy 7. March of the Chibis!

Worst Ending Animation: To Heart 2 and My-Otome tie for this.

Best Opening Song: Rozen Maiden Traumend

Worst Opening Song: Undecided

Best Opening Animation: Undecided but leaning towards Rozen Maiden Traumend.

Sticking to the question (meaning not limited to 2005 titles, but those I watched in 2005), my choices are:

Best Harem: Girls Bravo
Chris calls it a "guilty pleasure"--though I didn't feel guilty at all. I just enjoy the hell out of this one.

Runners Up: Tie: Ichigo 100% and Shuffle

Best Shoujo: Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
This was a surprisingly easy decision. What a fabulous soap opera. Talk about melodrama.

Runner Up: Kaleido Star

Extra: Best Mahou Shoujo: Pretear

Best Action: Full Metal Alchemist
I have no complaints about this show. I'm loving it--great meandering story, lots of interesting characters (who'd of though I could feel compassion for Lust?). It definitely delivers.

Runner Up: Chrno Crusade

Best Comedy: Full Metal Panic
I came late to the game on this one--but I'm glad I finally made it. A hilarious romp--at times.

Best Ecchi Loli Series: Uta~Kata
Great artwork, unusual story, the cutest Loli characters I've seen, with almost enough fan service.

Best Newly Started Series: GiTS:SAC 2nd Gig

Best Complete Region 1: Ikkitousen /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif
Ok, I'm kidding. But really, this series delivered exactly what I expected (I'm not sure what others were expecting /images/graemlins/shy10000.gif).

Actual Best Complete Region 1: Elfen Lied
It seemed like this one was split 50/50 on the love it/hate it spectrum. Frankly, I loved it. I think it was the general atmosphere, this weird tension between harem and horror that I liked. You were never sure who our hero was going to end up with, and it was always a possibility that that choice might be decapitated once chosen. "The horror."

Worst of 2005: Azumanga Daioh
Don't get me wrong here. I recognize the quality of the series, and even have an inkling what most people liked about this series, but I was bored to tears for much of the time. So rather than "Worst" of 2005, I'd call it "Most Disappointing."

Best title watched in 2005: Tie:

GiTS:SAC

Far and away the best sci fi anime I've ever seen. It includes a complex story involving adults, with incredibly byzantine politics, character development (especially amongst the Tachicomas), great twists, and some of the best action ever, doled out in small doses leaving you wanting more.

After 2nd Gig, assuming it goes the way I expect, this will probably nudge RahXephon out of top spot on my all time faves list.

Revolutionary Girl Utena

I started watching the first volume once, but was too busy to pay attention, and so it didn't work for me. I finally got back to it, and was able to focus. I watched all 39 episodes in a couple of weeks--and am really glad I did. I consider this to be one of the masterpieces of anime. Utena uses plot devices I've never seen elsewhere. It touches upon taboo subjects, not lightly, but delicately with a sledge hammer.

I would imagine that someone who worships books would probably love Utena as it incorporates many literary devices--allegory and symbolism being only the most obvious. I imagine myself watching this annually, and getting something out of it every time I do.

Disclaimer: I've not started many series that I own because I want to complete collection first (i.e., Gankutsuou, Samurai 7, Planetes, etc.)--so I have not considered these. I imagine that some of these will be included in my 2006 list. Tardy as usual!

Your terse response/question presupposes that the differentiations between genres is clear. In my experience (admittedly less than yours I imagine), anime classification is an art, and not a science.

The shounen/shoujo media-centered classifications do not work at all well with the sci fi/fantasy/romance classifications that we also often see. Shounen/Shoujo are barely useful as classifiers these days since there is so much cross-pollination. But that was the category used in the original post question.

With that said, I consider KimiNozu to be shoujo because it is a slice of life, which is particularly focused on relationships. I'm not sure where else it would be classed: Seinen? It doesn't seem to be the right subject matter. Harem? There aren't enough girls in love with the main character. Josei? This might work better, but my understanding is that Josei is focused on other subject matter these days (i.e., yaoi).

Rather than being enigmatic /images/graemlins/knowital.gif, why not tell us where you would classify it /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif.

Edited after thinking better of my earlier remarks.

For the record, I didn't assume anything. I thought about where I'd classify it based on content. I was aware that it was an H game. It's clearly different in its anime incarnation.

I'll ask the same question as I put to Di: Where would you classify it, and why?

Edited to remove the snotty response to a snotty remark. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Precisely. I really hate the over pidgeon-holing of anime what tends to go on these days.

As for how I classify it, I tend to go off the market it was intended for rather than the actual content - the show was very squarely aimed at a male audience (as was mentioned, it is based on what was originally an eroge), and as such I wouldn't call it shojou. I've not really watched the show to be honest (though, curiously, I suspect the big box I have here as the first volume of the R3 release in it...), though from what I gather the content is pretty close to the game (or at least the clean version).

Basically, shojou, shonen, etc are not genres, they are target audiences.

Actually, I tend not to split things off in shojou, shonen, etc, etc - the only categories which matter are stuff I like and dislike ^^;

Sorry for the short response, its just that I figured that someone who rated the show highly would probably have been aware of its origins and as such been aware it wasn't shojou.

Best series continuing from 2004: Fantastic Children
Best January series (in a season with little competition: Air
Best April series: Honey and Clover, but my favourite April series was probably Sousei no Aquarion
Least disappointing July series (bit of a washout for me): Sugar Sugar Rune
Best October series: Noein

Best R1 release: Planetes/Princess Tutu/Gankutsuou (in that order)

Most surprisingly good series: Air tied with Black Cat
Most disappointing series: Xenosaga tied with Eureka Seven
Series most frustratingly hampered by lack of budget: poor, dear Speed Grapher.

Best OP: "Sousei no Aquarion", Sousei no Aquarion
Worst OP: "Happy Material", Mahou Sensei Negima
Best ED: "Mizu no Madoromi", Fantastic Children
Worst ED: "funny girl", Happy Seven
Best music: Yoko Kanno, Sousei no Aquarion
Worst music: furani, Happy Seven

Best animation: Satelight, Noein tied with Kyoto Animation, Air
Worst animation: Gonzo, Speed Grapher

Best plot: Fantastic Children
Best episode: Tie between "Thoma's Truth", Fantastic Children 24 and "Fight", Noein 12
Worst episode (of a show I watched more than one episode of): "Childhood", Eureka Seven 6

That'll do for now, I could go on and on awarding things to shows if I really wanted...

Now I don't agree per say, but I do find one negative aspect to the music in Happy Seven myself. It has to do with the Transformation Scenes. Now how good or bad the music is not relevant to the issue I'm bringing up here.

My contention is through out the series they show the six transformation scenes for Happy Seven. The twins Mina and Nami share one. They may as well because well theyr'e twins and it's almost impossible to tell them apart. So separate ones for them would have been pointless.

The problem comes in with Tamon and Kuriya. The two share the same exact tune completely. Which is kind of lame because none of the other ones share a tune with each other. Okay Mina and Nami share one, but that's understandable since they transform together. If you ask me they should give Tamon her own transformation tune separate Kuriya. Maybe they could do that on the DVD version, but that may be asking too much...

KimiNozu is based off of a hentai sim. Places it quite firmly in shonen along with things like Air, Kanon, Comic Party, etc., etc. Just not Shonen Jump-type shonen.

People often use that argument and I agree with it for the most part. However what happens if the anime is based on a hentai game where you're dating guys instead. Or perhaps is a "Yaoi" game. Will the anime still be considered Shounen? /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif Just something to think about. Don't ask why I brought it up, but it suddenly came to mind.

In that case you're Angelique, and firmly shoujo. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

As for how I classify it, I tend to go off the market it was intended for rather than the actual content - the show was very squarely aimed at a male audience (as was mentioned, it is based on what was originally an eroge), and as such I wouldn't call it shojou.

For my own knowledge, what evidence do you have that the anime (rather than the H game--which I concede was probably intended for a male audience) was aimed at males? I would think they might expect to get a large female audience based on subject matter.

Sorry, posted my last question to Di before I saw your comment. By the way, I didn't intend to take the thread off track. It just evolved that way.

The fact that it was based on the game is reason enough, really, but aside from that there was extensive promotion in very male orientated magazines like Megami (I have a couple of issues with half nekkid Kiminozo girls in them, from the period when the show was airing).

To be honest, from what I gather there isn't that big a market for late night anime for a female audience - sure, there are a few shows (the recent Honey & Clover and Paradise Kiss), but they tend to be exceptions rather than the rule.

If calling a weird comment weird was a "snotty remark", you've got a dangerously thin skin and take personal offense where none was intended. That's not good. Anyway, KGNE is romance, it's hardcore drama, it's slightly harem, it's h-game adaptation... it's a lot of things, and shoujo is in no way one of them. I can't see any rationale behind calling it shoujo.

I think that's the problem. When someone hears "shounen" they assume it must be DBZ/Naruto or even Bebop. You don't need to be kicking the hell out of someone to be a show aimed at males.

Any number of shows can appeal well outside their target audience, and there is NOTHING stopping a female from loving KGNE, but there's no way it's "a shoujo show", even in my looser perferred definition of shoujo which ignores the silly "must have began as a manga in a girls managazine".

I'm stunned by the fact that Air isn't on everyone's lists. I can only assume most people haven't seen it yet. It's the best anime I've seen since Haibane Renmei, and quite possibly ever.

Actually I have seen Air TV. It's pretty nice over all, but I honestly enjoyed several anime from 2005 a lot more. However it has been awhile since I watched it. Either way I'm not exactly ready to put it on my list and I'm a bit too lazy right now to rewatch Air TV.

It's on my list. However I wouldn't say it's one of the best anime ever as there were numerous flaws in the show that bugged me.

Best I've seen all of: Peacemaker Kurogane
Best in progress: Planetes
Least liked: Chrono Crusade

And in 2006, if I think something is going to suck, I just don't get it in the first place. So no more buy and dumps like Nurse Witch Komugi, L/R, and the above mentioned Chrono Crusade. Learning my lesson the hard way.

Best R1:
ROD TV, and how! Of course, as a bibliophile, the show was practically porn for me.

Runner ups:
Melody of Oblivion, I'm a sucker for the surreal.
Planetes
Scrapped Princess

Guiltiest pleasures:
Ikkitousen. Aheheh. What can I say? It's based on a classical Chinese novel, it's lit'rary! Plus it's a cutting expose on cheaply manufactured school uniforms!
Elfin Lied. It's hard not to love a show in which one of the aims seems to be to force an appalled "Oh my God!" from the viewer at some point in each episode.

My answer to almost everything, be it songs, animation, story, whatever..... is Bleach. /images/graemlins/happy.gif Nanoha A's and Shakugan no Shana come up as close seconds though.
