[/ QUOTE ]

It's basically a game where 20 AOD members are selected to compete against each other. There will be 10 rounds and the 20 members will select an anime character in each round. Once all 10 rounds are completed, voting beings. The anime character that receives the most votes in each round (like a popularity contest) receives a certain number of points. In the end, all points earned from each round are tallied, the member with the most points is the King/Queen of the 2006 Anime Draft and gets all bragging rights! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Someone fill in if I left anything out, lol btw, the rules are not finalized yet, so stay tune in the other thread.

You know what? I've been in the past two (or one, if its prefered) and it would be a shame to not give another shot at it. *clangs a bell repeatedly*

Here ye, here ye! Latest telegram from the Pony Express states that quick draft entries will start being accepted at 7:11 PM EST, AND NO EARLIER! (Time shall be judged by AoD official time.) In addition, people who want to play that have not posted in this thread have until 6 PM EST on Saturday to post here. At that time, this thread will be locked, and anyone who has not yet posted in this thread will not be eligible to play. Quick draft submissions will be open until 11:59 PM EST on Monday.

That being said, I hope everyone's ready...

I don't think my choices suck, but apparently I'm wrong. I picked Sailor Moon last year (who I thought was popular) and she did terribly. And I did the same thing I always do when I'm rushed. I panicked. It's like "Oh geez, WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING?" (Yes, the all caps were needed. That's how I panic.)

Well, I went for Sasuke (from Naruto) for my fast-poll pick last year, figuring that, with everyone having picked female characters, one of the most popular characters from one of the most popular shonen shows would have done reasonably well. Big mistake /images/graemlins/sweat200.gif

I thought it would add a lot of excitement to the fast polls if we did a surprise pick. From the comments I don't think I was wrong in that assesment. Now to see if my choice was a good one or not. I don't have as focused agenda as I did last year but I plan on having as much fun as I can.

I can't wait till Tuesday, I think that's when the lists are supposed to be posted. Are we not allowed to campaign until then? Otherwise you'd be giving away your character choice. I'm glad I got my second choice, but I hope no one picks my third, fourth, and fifth choices either.

Who knows! Lafiel went to another team last year, in the first round, before I joined the Draft. I forget who had her, though I do remember that she did reasonably well for that team. We'll have to see who chooses to go for her this year, if anyone. In any case it will be very interesting!

I thought it would add a lot of excitement to the fast polls if we did a surprise pick. From the comments I don't think I was wrong in that assesment. Now to see if my choice was a good one or not. I don't have as focused agenda as I did last year but I plan on having as much fun as I can.

[/ QUOTE ]
I had to settle for my 3rd choice... although I made a point of prioritizing picks based on their likelihood of being able to win fast polls and avoiding potential vote splits.

I'm not too concerned... although I'd have liked to have scored one of my Top 2 picks, I've been stuck at work tonight so it was unavoidable that I'd miss the initial signup bubble.

There will be a board/chart made with these listings. It will probably surface after the qualifying polls are over and the rest of the draft begins. It would be nice to have a board/chart made when the pools for the qualifying polls are announced on a seperate page from the big board for the rest of the draft. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

No, you don't need to create Forum Avatars for your characters. Although you most certainly can if you want to.

Anna was referring to the pictures / avatars displayed on the Anime Draft "Lineup" board, showing who had picked what character. This board was filled in as people made their choices, and was run by AyaReiko in the previous two years.

Speaking of which, has anyone saved AyaReiko's old work for the archives?

Not in, RL guarentees that. I'm also debating about going ahead and create the Anime Royal Rumble. Anyway, I'll take a position in the booth and/or sideline reporter this time around.

General hints for newcomers:

1-- Pay attention to forum buzz. Whatever is the talk of the table has a better chance to score votes.
2-- Avoid picking R2 characters. They usually recieve far less votes than average. (Exceptions: See Hint 1)

I may make a new draft board (depending if RL allows me to), but I definitely want to redesign the layout if I do.

Sure thing. Great suggestion too, since that is especially important information. It'll be up on the Rules page shortly.

I do have a question though: I couldn't find a reference for what kind of PM soliciting is acceptable (if any). Did we decide on this? I can think of two scenarios:

PMing random AoD members asking for votes. (Lamhirh's thought: probably not a good idea)

PMing targeted AoD members.. For instance, someone is a known fan of Maids, so you encourage them to vote for your character Mahoro (Mahoromatic) in that round. (Lamhirh's thought: good way to get interested voters, doesn't sound so bad. Maybe)

Don't mind, don't mind. They'll need you in case my experiment doesn't work out. Just use jpgs or gifs for your images. pngs take up alot of file space.

I told ya EmperorBrandon would pick Pixy Misa! I was struggling between her and Lafiel, but since I've never had the chance to pick Lafiel, I chose her to kick it off. I thought Lafiel would of been picked by Lamhirh already since I posted my picks 1 hour after it started. At the very least, he's not facing her in the prelim round unless neither one of us makes it, lol

Still, I'm glad I'm not facing Osaka or Pixy Misa in the prelims or else it's gonna be ugly, lol.

The groupings worked out well since no groups have more than 1 characters from the same series /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

Since we have 27, I'm guessing 7 will be eliminated?

Finally the fast poll match ups are revealed! And it seems we are playing not to lose. A lot of safe picks with a lot of tried and true characters. Group 1:
EmperorBrandon- Pixy Misa (Magical Project S)
Sojirou the Tenken- Eikichi Onizuka (GTO)
penguin_tango- Roy Mustang (FMA)
Big-boi- Motoko Kusanagi (GitS)
Nabeshinji- Osaka (Azumanga)
DiGiKerot- Natsuki Kuga (My-HiME)

Both Onisuka and Motoko were a little disppointing in last years fast polls, so can they step it up in a less competitive enivorment? Maybe a bigger question is weither the time has arrived for Natsuki of reletively new show My-HiMe or will Roy Mustang's starring role in a hit TV show steal all their thunder? Did anyone doubt EmperorBrandon's selection and his unhealthy fixation on little magical girls?

Group 2 seems to have a lot of strength and intellegence along with a few overactive hormones in Kazuharu. Lafiel a perinnel powerhouse is looking to ride that CoTS wave into a high pick into a high position in the draft. But stawart players Guts and Rei have their own fanical fan base to draw on and might be stumbing blocks. Yukino Miyazawa was a doing anything type of gal in last years polls, so might we see the same this year? And in some of the riskist picks can Kazuhara and Jo find success in top heavy grouping? Or will the flash of their shows be grounded out by the subtances of competition?

Group 3:
AbeChinchilla- Kei Kurono (Gantz)
GyBaNOJunior- Princess Tutu (Princess Tutu)
Lamhirh of the Stars- Skuld (OMG/AMG)

Group 3 is a relatively laid back pool with many veteran star players in its showcase. Will surprise fast poll winner Princess Tutu dance her way to victory, and will she answer to Duck or Ahiru? Can Spike and Skuld get off their buttes and partispate? And how fanatical are the Eva fans? Is Kei about to get railroaded again?

Group 4:
Anna Sartin- Sakaki (Azumanga)
Ape2020- Ifurita (El Hazard)
Jimmie M- Miyuki Kowbayakowa (YUA)

DSA Report: BALCO new spokepeople

Reports out of Tokyo has it due to the fallout from the steroid use scandals in major league sports, BALCO founder 53-year-old Victor Conte, as been looking for spokespeople, to better their image. They have been in secret talks with popular anime stars Yukino Miyazawa and Motoko Kusanagi through mutual aquintence Greg Anderson. While speculation of use by these two entertainers is only whispered (well Yukino flatout admitted it), there is no call for testing by anime fandom. So BALCO might be looking for new markets to expand into.

Many in the industry suggest this is just the tip of the iceberg and Yukino and Motoko might not be the only ones in negotiation. Indeed an icon of muscle and power longed rumored to use preformance enhancing drugs might be the next target of BALCO. In an effort to confirm or dispute these rumors we sent a intern to the castle of said icon. Only his head returned.

A long held secret of the anime industry has been uncovered. From Japan long known to be a male-dominated culture, where most of the best jobs are reserved for men only. Where there are even plays were all the parts, including female roles, are performed by guys. We have found the Anime Industry is not immuned to this attitude. unbenownist to many western otaku here and around the world, most of the most popular loicion actresses have teeny weenies. That's right folks hugely popular characters like Lafiel, Princess Tutu, Honda Tohru, Skuld, and even Chiyo of Azumanga Daioh fame just young boys in drag.

We sent our "assasin correspondant in training" Asami to get some comments from Chiyo directly, as she was visiting the USA on a campaign tour. Just outside the men's room in Roy Rogers Park Asami caught up with the uber cute child star. While denying the accusation, her blushing face told another story. And she refused to offer any proof in his defense by dropping trowl.

Congrats on getting Lafiel, Nuriko. She was my first choice as well for the same reason - I didn't get her last year and was hoping to correct that. But you beat me to it! I wonder if anyone else tried to pick her but was denied.

The first groupings turned out to be well mixed, especially for a "random" system as was used. It will be very interesting to see where things go from here.

Actually, your message does highlight the one slightly disappointing thing about this year's signups. I didn't PM dunno001 until about 3 hours after the bell because I was away eating dinner and watching Kill Bill when the announcement went out. dunno001 only gave 30 minutes of warning (6:40 saying it'd start at 7:11), so I totally missed the window, already being away at 6:40. I'm not in the Draft, but I don't envy the people in group 5. That is probably the absolute toughest group to call who might win the first round polling.

Who I think will be 1st or 2nd place in each group:

Group 1 - I don't know who some of these characters are seeing as I haven't seen any of the shows listed here except AzuDai and GTO. I'm pretty sure Osaka will win this grouping, but I don't know who to pick for a second choice.

Group 2 - Rei Ayanami will go on. Duh. As for a second choice, I'll go for Lafiel. She's very well liked on AoD. Yes, I think she beats Yukino in popularity.

Group 3 - Misato will probably go on and I think Skuld will too. Both are from "tried and true" classic anime. Gantz, Tutu, and Bebop are not classics, though Bebop is definitely getting there.

Group 4 - Sakaki! Wheee! She's my favorite AzuDai character, but she's also rather well liked. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif I have no idea for the rest, but will randomly vote for Ifurita. Why? El Hazard is another classic anime.

Group 5 - HARD! Anyway, my votes go to Belldandy and Vash. I think they'll completely trash Van and Tohru. It's hard to determine where Chiyo might fit in. I see her doing better than Van and Tohru, but I don't know how she'd compare to Belldandy and Vash.

Ah well, I guess I'll write up some promotion spiel tomorrow anyway.

I think its pretty easy to pick some clear winners in most the groups, though Group 4 is really hard to judge - only Sakaki really strikes me as a heavyweight. It'll be interesting to see what happens with that group, certainly.

Since I failed to qualify with Natsumi last year (She did well for Narob in the main draft, though), I decided to go with Miyuki this year as my 1st rounder. This is a very formidible group but she is up to the challenge. Show some love for Natsumi's tech-savvy partner in You're Under Arrest! & vote for Miyuki! Ken Nakajima will appreciate it too (He's off in a corner glaring at Lupin since Batou is too much of a gentleman to make a play for Miyuki /images/graemlins/wink.gif).

Would it have made any difference if he had given more notice? Maybe, maybe not (I'm still really happy about Skuld). But it wouldn't hurt for next year /images/graemlins/happy.gif.

Don't take it the wrong way, just amusing myself with the campaigns. It's definitely one of the more entertaining aspects of these drafts, lol.

IMO, no campaigning is needed in the fast draft, since it is assumed that we all picked the best in each class. Once we enter into the draft and start picking, thats another story, lol The fast pools should be everyone's sure win to get in. I would love to reserve Lafiel for later rounds but chances of her not being picked in the first round is ... nil.

I'm not so sure about that. Last year I relied heavely on my campaigning to get Mikura out of the fast polls. Even though I considered she had the best crossover and hentai appeal on my team. I even intentionaly avoided doing anything in the first round of the last year fast poll just to guage things and got what 1 or 2 votes. Then set the machine in motion (I admit some of its a little questionable or distastiful) but I cashed in for a huge suprise win. While we all picked the best of class some votes are make for different reasons. Humor, pity, grandness, as well as popularity can be parlay into votes.

And I also did mention '3-day weekend' before that. Yeah, it was rather tricky, but that's also why it was defined in the rules that signups must be open for at least 72 hours. Part of me was debating about trying to be cruel, and either see if I could get the post in Japanese (which would probably be quite bad Japanese, but...), or just posting when it would start in Tokyo time, but bury that in a long post.
