View Full Version : Is this Nausicaa set legit?

For Christmas, I received a copy of Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind with the Nausicaa figure.
But from looking on www.nausicaa.net (http://www.nausicaa.net), it doesn't actually match up with any of the sets listed. The disks have the same content as the R3 Taiwan release, but the outter box and the DVD keepcase claims it's R2. Also, even though it came in the box with the figure, it didn't have the softcase; just the regular keepcase. The keepcase itself was damaged to the point that I need to replace the keepcase, but the box was still shrinkwrapped (with the harder kind of shrinkwrap plastic; not the soft kind that many home shrinkwrap machines use).

So basically, it appears as if someone put the R3 or bootlegs of the R3 disk into the R2 set and kept the softcover. But the shrinkwrap really appears to have been factory shrinkwrap (I think; I can't find it at the moment but I do remember that it was a harder, more brittle plastic than the kind that the machine at my Dad's work uses).
Or was there a limmited R3 run that just re-used the packaging and figure from the Japanese run that nausicaa.net doesn't list?

It plays fine on my player, but I don't know if my player is multi-region or not (apparently so).

Can you tell the people of this forum where did you get the DVD from? Also, if you can, can you provide camera shots of the DVD and its packaging?

I don't have a camera (though I could scan it later), but the front cover is identical to this one: http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/video/nausicaa/nausicaa_r2_dvd_cover.jpg
Same logos and everything. Back cover says R2.
The disks themselves seem to be one of the r3 disks; they contain Chinsese subtitles and language options.

The figure of her is the same one as: http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/video/nausicaa/nausicaa_r2_dvd_set.jpg
According to the box it came in, it's porcelain.

The outter-box that the two items were inside is blue, features the Japanese logo at the bottom of the front and has "Nausicaa" written down the side in English. On the box, there is a sticker that says "Mac Movies", "DVD-9", and has a bunch of kanji. One side has artwork of Nausicaa and Teto with her gun, the other side is plain with "Nausicaa" written in English. The back has information printed in white text, then has a mostly purple sticker with more information on it. Both sets of information claim R2.
EDIT: On the top, there's a silver sticker that mentions the name in ENglish and Japanese, says "Porcelain Figure" and says (c)Nibariki.

I'm moreso conserned about the ligilimency of the actual disks themselves; the packaging seems fine for R2, but the disks don't match any of the R2's I've seen listed.

EDIT: The cover for the DVD case is also dual-sided with artwork of her on the inside. I think it's the same artwork from the cover if I recall correctly.

If you have a DVD-ROM or writer in your computer, you should use it to determine the actual region of the disc. Use the Disc Info function in Nero CDSpeed (http://www.cdspeed2000.com) for this. If it's actually a region 0 disc, then you can be almost certain it's a boot.

If you get some prompt about changing the region of the drive, ignore it because that means the disc is some region other than 1 or 0. Don't click anything in that prompt or bad things may happen. Just take the disc out.

It is rare to find bootlegs that are not region 0.

Thanks for the program. Great, the disks are all-region.

Kind of strange for them to copy the R2 box, lables, case, etc (even the disks themselves had "R2" and the Studio Ghibli DVD logo and etc on them) so exactly, and then have the R3 content. o_O

Eh, I planned on picking up the R1 release anyways for the dub, but at least now I've got a cool figure. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

There is a Taiwanese R3 figure set which is now OOP. HOWEVER there are many fake Nausicaa statue sets too. Chances are this is an eBay fake.

Yeah, it sounds like some crooks scanned and duplicated the R2 cover art, region markings and all, and then put inside some "carbon copies" of the R3 discs. /images/graemlins/anger100.gif

Like others have mentioned it's a bootleg unfortunately. And with that I'm closing this thread.
