View Full Version : Anime that's still MIA in R2

I'm not exactly in a hurry to buy this show all over again, but I do find it rather odd that Kimagure Orange Road still has yet to be released on DVD in Japan. A remaster with some new Akemi Takada art would be pretty sweet. Maybe they think everyone who wanted it bought the LDs? Certainly, a lot of lesser shows have been released.
What else is still MIA going into 2006?

Eh, give it time and it'll come out. It took until just a few days ago for City Hunter to come out on DVD.

Oh and just to add the original SD Gundam OVAs haven't been released on DVD yet either. That's one I'd pick up in a heartbeat.

Hana Yori Dango. Although I think that was mainly because of the live action TV show, that has just finihsed and is slated for DVD early next year. Maybe after the TV show is released on DVD it will be.

Released on LD (or VHS), but not on DVD yet:
• GUNNM OVA (I have the first jp LD...but I´d so double-dip if they´d release it on DVD)
• Zetsuai OVA (AFAIK only Production I.G´s BRONZE has been released on DVD)
• BRONZE Kôji Nanjô Cathexis (gotta love the LD, but again I´d love to double-dip)
• Arei no Kagami - Way to the Virgin Space (the prices for the jp VHS are ridiculous)
• Saint-Elmo ~ Hikari no Raihôsha (have the jp VHS in pretty good state...but I´d love to see it on DVD)
• Marine Snow no Densetsu - Victor Entertainment released the Soundtrack on CD several years ago...why didn´t they bother to release the OVA on DVD as well -.-
• JUNK STORY - AFAIK this has only been released on jp VHS
• Teito Monogatari
• YAWARA! Sore Yuke Koshinuke Kids!! - Pony Canyon released the TV series...why did VAP never release the movie on DVD?
• YAWARA! Zutto kimi no koto ga - Again, the TV special has only been released on LD
• Bobbie ni Kubittake - Also only released on LD yet
• X Densha Deiko
• CLAMP in Wonderland
• DNA2 - TV and OVA, only released on LD
• Petshop of Horrors
• Hisashi Eguchi no NANTOKA NARUDESHO!
• NINETEEN 19
• MIDNIGHT EYE Goku both OVAs only available on LD
And the once that haven´t been released on any format yet:
• Sennen Joô no Shôtai wa!? - the 2nd TV special featuring the bizarre crossover with Dr. Slump
• Ginga Tetsudô 999 - Glass no Claire 3D-ban
• Ginga Tetsudô 999 - Niji no Michishirube
• Ginga Tetsudô 999 - Kieta Taiyôkei (Planetarium movie)
• Ginga Tetsudô 999 for Planetarium
• Mirai Snow Angel ~ Mizu to Inochi no Wakusei - such a great 3D CG short...although the final track of the BGM may have been one of the reasons it´s never been released (they simply took one track from the Escaflowne Soundtrack *no kidding*)
• CLOVER

Oh, I'd buy these two in a heartbeat if they were released... Sigh... I put my hope in the fact that the Petshop of Horrors manga-ka is writing new stories in Shin-Petshop of Horrors. I read the first two chapters published and liked them. Have yet to pick up the two tankobon released but will soon. Maybe they'll decide there's a market for a DVD-release soon. Preferrably all 4 episodes on one DVD or a double-DVD.
I'd like to add Candy Candy to the list of anime not available on DVD. And I haven't seen Lady Georgie either, but at least they show it on japanese TV.

My money is waiting for a KOR release on R2J. As its got its own cult status, & collectibles do well, I'm surprised too. Perhaps now Izumi Matsumoto is back working again, things might happen. The LDs have a reputation for laser rot - so I'm sure KOR fans would buy a DVD box set. Not even Shin KOR - an early-mid 90s release (on standard & LE DVD) has had a R2 DVD release).
As for others, Mobile Suit Gundam TV series always comes to mind first! Have the Rumik World OVAs been released on DVD?

Some OAV I would really like to see :
- Deimos no hanayome - Ran no Kumikyoku
- Karura Mau
- Utsonomiko
And yes, Clover too. Now that like everybody else I have been able to appreciate the clip, I really want to see it released on DVD. Even more than before :D
Nozomi Witches OVA (aka Bewitching Nozomi).
The 3 OVAs in a single disc would be a beautiful release.
ps: Anyone who doesn't know this series can check the 3 VHS tapes covers in this Yahoo Japan auction or the first 2 LD covers in this other auction.
-
Mod edit: Snipped auction URLs. Unfortunately they're not allowed outside the ebay forums, and then only ones for ebay itself, not yahoo. If you want to link to just images it's better to make a copy and mirror them on your own site. That's also more permanent for people reading these threads, than auction links which can go down at a moment's notice.

And now that I think about it, doesn't Karura Mau (in any form) also lack a DVD release?

Kimagure Orange Road was showing (maybe still is) early in the morning once a week here. I caught it once (too early for me usualy) and it looked like a new HD master. There was no telecine wiggle, no analogue video noise or composite cross-color problems, and the song subtitles at the end were very clear and easy to read. Certainly vastly better than the existing region 1 DVDs
At worst its a new SD master. It was broadcast on one of the terresial digital channels that is 1080i full time, usualy upconverted SD stuff looks worse than this did.
But maybe this gold hope of a new DVD release, and may be a early-title HD release

If they've been showing it on TV, then there is a good chance for a R2J release sometime in 2006/2007
If AnimEigo can remaster BGC 3 times (was it 3? or 4.. I lost count), then you know they'll jump down on the idea of remastering KOR to DVD (Just think of all the extras!)

Animeigo only released Bubblegum Crisis twice. And the second version they didn't remaster themselves they just licensed the remastered video used for the R2 versions. Now if/when KOR is remastered and finally released in Japan it would be nice if Animeigo would re-release it with the remastered video.

Of course, I still need to decided whether or not to pick up Hiatari Ryoko as well.

AE probably used the same masters as for their LDs (still best quality video IMO) & VHS for their DVDs.
If a R2 re-master version was released, I'm not sure if they would go for the TV series or just the OVAs (& 1st movie). BGC & OMG are short series (8 & 5 episodes respectively) - so presumably less expensive.
Are the Japanese UY OVAs & movies better/improved than AE's?

Don't forget the obscure fan-favorite, To-y. I hope it's not a music rights issue that's tying this one up. (All of the music was from Sony at the time, IIRC, but some of the musicians have since gone to other labels or retired.)
Mamoru Hamatsu is still one of my all-time favorite directors.
There's also the OB Planning-produced Rumiko Takahashi OAV's (Rumik World series, Mermaid's Scar and 1 lb. Gospel).
Thanks for mentioning Nineteen19. Actually, a lot of the older one-shot or two-shot OAV's haven't ever been re-released. There's also plenty of "pilot" OAV's (such as Kodocha) from Shueisha manga that have never gotten beyond their limited VHS run.
There's also a great Sci-Fi shoujo two-part called "Oz" that I would love to see on DVD from some country at some point.

I'm not hopeful that we'll get any more Nintama than the first two seasons that have been released so far. I'm also still waiting and hoping that some day I'll see Bonobono, Ninpen Manmaru, Akachan to Boku, Brave Command Dagwon, Gambaristo Shun, VS Knight Lamune & 40 Fire, and the Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo anime. I'm surprised to see Hell Teacher Nube first box is scheduled for Feb 2006. A good thing indeed!!

Why anybody would waste good money on Dagwon is beyond me (I guess it's bishounen sickness or something), but I'd expect it on DVD by the end of the year, as ALL of the other Yusha anime are out (except for J-Decker). Might Gaine just got wrapped up in Nov, so expect an announcement on which one's next soon. Personally, I hope it is Dagwon, that way I have more time to get cash together for J-Decker.

I read some of the manga for To-y and it seemed like a cute music story to me (the fangirl was really adorable).
As for Oz, since Natsumi Itsuki's Yakumo Tatsu was released on DVD, and her manga Jyu-Oh-Sei will be adapted into a TV-anime by Bones, I still have hope for that one. I own the soundtrack and one of her doujinshi that has pictures and character sketches from the OVA. And there was a re-release of the manga last year plus some new chapters included (sidestories). But yes, thats one DVD I'd buy in a heartbeat if it was released.... Glad to see I'm not the only fan! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Kyattou Ninden Teyandee, the Toei anime that was the basis for "Samurai Pizza Cats".
As a Transformers fan more than an anime fan I'd like Beast Wars II and Beast Wars Neo as well, they're far from the best toy-based anime but they're fairly entertaining.

Just because you don't like Dagwon, I don't know why you have to be rude about it. Different people have different interests. I saw part of Dagwon several years ago, and never got to follow up since the video store where I was living didn't have anything but the overview videos. I enjoyed what I saw, and I'm interested in seeing the rest.

Sorry. Dagwon is kind of a sore spot among Yuusha fans, and is generally viewed as the show that brought down the franchise. It's not a *bad* show, but it was clearly made for viewers outside of the target and assigned demographic for the franchise.

If I´m not totally wrong the 2 episodes of the Oz OVA had been released on LD (and I assume those are pretty rare these days and rather expensive).
I remember reading though that Natsumi Itsuki wasn´t pleased with how the OVA turned out. Personally I´d love to see it (didn´t Madhouse animate it?)

Yes, Oz was released on LD. I watched them. It's a bit less run-of-the-mill as some other OVAs of the Golden Era of OVAs, but it's not that great. The character designs kinda attractive, kinda unattractive and while sci-fi shoujo is unusual, I don't think OZ was particularly memorable, exciting, or outstanding... must have been that long as hell rapid-scrolling text introduction which we all thought died with Dallos. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif OZ isn't Demon of Steel or Ninja Ryukenden bad, but it's not much better either. To-Y and 19, on the other hand, have a lot of style and atmosphere. 19 especially uses innovative cinema techniques and has wonderful character development.
