View Full Version : Characters that will live long after their show has died

What I mean is, the show stopped years back, no one expects any more of it to ever be made, but the character just keeps showing up (in figures, in doujin porn, on stickers and in advertisements) as though she -- it usually is a she -- has an independent life of her own. Maybe she'll be around long after the show has been forgotton completely.
Ayanami Rei from Evangelion is maybe the most familiar example, but Eva is a famous show, unlikely to be forgotton just yet. I think a better example is lovely Mizuho Kazami (http://www.maxfactory.jp/kazami_mizuho.htm) from Onegai Teacher. Her combination of sweetness, megane and "voluptuous maturity" seems likely to generate models and pinups long after the -- rather forgettable -- show, game and whatever are long gone.
Any other candidates for this kind of immortality?

Lum seems to have pretty good staying power.
Captain Harlock fits this as well, despite mulitple reincarnations.

Chii from Chobits.
Minmei from SDF Macross
Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon
Major Kusanagi from GITS

We could add Sakura and the rest from CCS to this list without a doubt.
And unless they do Onegai Friends. I still tend to see stuff from the Onegai series.

Kyoko Otonashi - Maison Ikkoku
Sure, there's going to be a new "dorama" (sic?) of Maison Ikkoku, but before that was announced, there was a newspaper poll taken of 10,000 Japanese adults a couple of years back, in which she was named as one of the top 5 anime heroines...some 15+ years after the end on the series and manga.

Spike and Co. from Cowboy Bebop.

Bah, Onegai* is not "rather forgettable" =P
And I can't believe nobody beat me to Belldandy! Even before the TV series she was everywhere. Ditto on her sisters to a lesser extent.

Vash the Stampede from Trigun.
The anime hasn't even started yet but judging by all the doujin and figures I would have to say Saber and Rin from Fate/Stay Night.

I'm not sure the whole cast of CCS, but definitely, DEFINITELY Tomoyo. She'll live on in every "obsessed best friend" character in any anime from now on.

well, i'll 3rd Sakura, 2nd Tomoyo, 2nd Chii, 2nd Beldandy, and add InuYasha.
Shamefull Edit: How the hell could I have forgotten Ruri?!!!!

That's because they originate from an H-Game made by the phoenomically popular Type-Moon. Plus Fate/hollow ataraxia came out last October, so they hardly count.
And yet, there is no mention of Sailor Moon in this thread? *Sigh* What is this world coming to? /images/graemlins/wink.gif
Others...
... um, actually, I'm drawing a blank beyond what has already been mentioned. Maybe I'll think of more later.

Is this immortality among US anime fandom or Japanese anime fans? If its Japanese than I'd say the Amuro/Char pair from Gundam will be immortalized forever as Gundam still rates usually in the top 5 among japanese anime fans in polls that are done.

Also wanted to add Lupin III. Even after 38 years since he first appeared in Manga Action Weekly, he is still a huge hit in Japan and is probably one of the most popular, if not the most popular, and beloved anime/manga characters of all time.
I'll add Miaka and co from Fushigi Yugi to the list, cause of what it did for the shoujo genre.

Ayukawa Madoka from Kimagure Orange Road. Good KOR cels of Madoka from the Akemi Takeda designs - because of her expressions & character - still fetch high auction prices.
Also because of Akemi Takeda's KOR paintings, & KOR's music. Not even on R2J DVD yet.
As well as Rei Ayanami (in/out of any attire), I'd also say Asuka in her red plug suit & Misato Katsuragi in her red & black NERV uniform.
Ruri Hoshino from Nadesico is another character bigger than the title, who symbolises it. Like Rei, her unique eyes & wise-yet-childlike expression make her show easy to remember.
Belldandy, Skuld & Urd from OMG each dress uniquely & are unmistakeable. Their characters & appearances are distinctive enough to make them iconic.
Ryo Saeba & Lupin, from dress style, hair & posture. Maybe the most larger-than-life earthbound characters in anime.

Ruri Hoshino (http://images.google.com/images?q=ruri+hoshino&sourceid=mozilla&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&sa=N&tab=wi) of Nadesico.
Characters were either straight-out cloned from and/or heavily "inspired" by her character/personality-designs. To this day. Her figurines and stuff are still hot-sellers to this day, iirc.

*nods* Indeed. I wish we could add Ichigo Morino to those ranks, but I don't think she'll ever have near the fame Ruri does.
