Hey all.

I've been watching lately Naruto on friday nights on YTV for some time now. I enjoy the show quite alot. It's a nice surprise. I've heard of the name before, but never knew it was that good and interesting.

I was wondering if the series will come out on dvd at some point. How many episodes is there is all ? Is the series finish in Japon ?

Yes, at least 150 and counting, and it's still running in Japan.

The series is still going out in Japan, there at ep. 160-something I think. The first volume is going to come out in March I beleive, with 3 eps, edited. Later in the year a first season box set will be released uncut.

The first edited volume is 4 episodes and later on a 13 episode set of uncut/bilingual with subs will be released.

What you see on TV. It's apparently not edited horribly, but some things are understandably cut.

So the first release is the English dubbed, somewhat edited release you see on CN. The 13 ep boxsets are the bilingual unedited release. They're coming later.

I wonder if there's a Canadian TV version of Naruto that's less edited than that on CN. After all, it had previously been reported that Gundam SEED received less editing when it was broadcast on YTV.

As far as I know the edited version is blood-reduced and maybe a few other minor alterations as well. Nothing nearly as bad as a hacked up, music-changed nonsense release from 4Kids or anything, but still, uncut is uncut and that's the version people here are always gonna recommend, including myself. /images/graemlins/wink.gif Although the relatively light editing on the TV version makes it a very nice preview option. I saw it for the first time on YTV last night myself and it definitely guaranteed a sale from me for the uncut set.

About editing, is it normal that the graphics of the show don't have a lot of colors?

I mean compared to other cartoon or anime shows, seems to me that it isn't colorful. A whole lot more "bright" or "cloudy" than usual for a cartoon/anime.

Is the uncut version like that ?

For the most part, YTV airs what they're given. Bandai provided them with the uncut version of Gundam SEED, so the version they aired had very few edits. However, Viz pre-edited Naruto, so that's the version YTV airs.

Since there's almost nothing in Naruto that would actually need to be edited for broadcast on YTV at the timeslot it's given, it's pretty clear that Viz has done this to ensure that people have incentive to buy the uncut boxsets. It's pretty malicious, really.

People also tend to forget that VIZ created it's own AMV style opening and Ending for the TV verson of Naruto.

Did anyone expect it to air with the original op/ed though? I didn't. At least what they made is workable, and not... rap...

13 episodes for the first season boxset. What season are they at, all 13 episodes each? They will do one boxset per season?

Talk about an expensive anime to collect. On the other hand, it might be worth it compare to others series that are available. Makes me wonder how much it will be priced.

Am in no hurry adding to my collection at the moment, but Naruto might be an exception.

First season has 35 episodes, going by the Japanese DVD release (i.e. up to the end of Stage 1).

If you want expensive, try buying the R2's /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

They're not season boxes. Just collections of 13 or so episodes each, in unedited form. Season boxes may come out eventually, like they're doing with Inu-Yasha, but it won't happen for a long time unless the series suddenly starts to bomb in sales. Yeah, it's going to be an expensive series to collect, just because of it's length. But it was expensive for Viz to license, and they've got to milk it for all it's worth just to recoup licensing and production costs.

[/ QUOTE ]they have broadcasted 16 episodes or 17 not sure which, they had a 16 episode marathon and a new episode new year's eve, but I am not sure if the 16 episodes was a new one or an extra one. so the count is between 16 and 17.

Sounds to me that's simply the way the show (or that episode anyway) was originally designed.

*shrugs* Par for the course. If I had my way, anime would air in the west with the original OP/ED sequences, but I don't really fault anyone when those sequences are changed. Changing the BGM, however, is something I will never, ever, ever understand and thankfully that's not happening here.

Again, changing the opening was probably only done to give people incentive to buy the DVDs. Most of the shows that air on YTV have their original openings, so it really makes Naruto feel out of place on the Friday block. It really needs to move to an earlier timeslot.

I haven't seen it myself, so I don't know how noticable it is, but I wonder how many of the people watching even realize that the opening was changed? My youngest brother and his friends had never seen it before it aired on CN, so edits and changes mean nothing to them, since they don't really know they're happening.

Since a season (in the traditional sense) is 26 episodes, two boxsets make a season. But I don't really think Naruto is being released in terms of "seasons". Story arcs are really more important, and they didnt necessarily coincide with neat numerical divisions. The 13 ep boxsets are just a nice way of releasing it.

The boxsets will actually make it cheaper to collect that it would be as individuals, I'm willing to bet. But yes, no matter HOW it's released, it'll be expensive simply because it's so LONG!

The reasons for editing a show would be to target a younger crowd? If that were true, the show airs still airs at 9:30pm on YTV, bit late for children I would think.

The show basically targets 9-14, which is about what it targeted in Japan. But like I said, since the Bionix block is supposed to be 12-17, it would be a lot smarter for YTV to air it earlier, given the way it's being marketed.

I'm confused as to what you mean by this. I personally don't find Naruto to look any less bright compared to other series. The storyarc currently airing on TV has Naruto and his friends fighting Haku and Zabuza in the fog, so everything looks hazy and discolored. Is that what you're referring to? The show doesn't usually look like that.
