View Full Version : Moments, shows, or characters that made you happy or "proud" to be a anime fan
I was reading the "say something about AOD or anime fandom that puzzles you" thread, and ended up reading a good link. The link had a quote from Toshio Okada(a Gainax founder) which inspired me to make this thread. The quote was:
[ QUOTE ]
What About the Next Generation?
But what about the next generation? Where is the newest generation of Japanese anime makers?
Unfortunately, Mr. Okada suggests, the latest generation of anime viewers in Japan are not true Otaku. They may be anime fans, but they lack the deep, passionate connection to the medium, and many of them seem to have taken up anime fandom because it's cool or "fashionable." Rather than being active critics of anime, they are content to be customers, or consumers. Mr. Okada believes that in a society where no one is truly passionate about a medium, the medium will become lukewarm and stagnant. "Why not [be lazy] and just have the good guy win?" "Why not just have Scooby Doo?"
[/ QUOTE ]
Mr. Okada brings up a good point. I started to think about scenes, shows, or characters that upon seeing them or remembering them made me go "now THAT is why I watch/like anime". While one can think of many things, I tried to think of the moment, show, or character that makes me feel "revitalized" about anime or my fandom in general.
Show Wise:
Cowboy Bebop
Planetes
FLCL
GITS SAC and 2nd Gig
Moment/Scene Wise:
A scene from one of the last episodes of GITS SAC. I think it was around episode 20-22. The scene was when <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Motoko and Batou were sent in to get a offical in regards to the laughing man case. They tried to get him out be helicopter, but Batou couldn't make it. So the Major comes in and takes out members of the NARC squad. Batou escapes with the target, while the Major is left to fight a mech.
While fighting the mech, she dodges through rooms and gets pushed/thrown out a window with one arm and damaged. The mech steps on her head and is about to crush her until reinforcements arrive. Motoko takes Saito's huge sniper rifle and repeatedly shoots the "door" on the mech. For a cyborg, she has a look on her face that gives me chills everytime I watch that scene. </span>
Character Wise:
Kaname Chidori

Revolutionary Girl Utena. The first time I watched it, so many moments left me in shivers or simply awed. And they still do. Princess Tutu is giving me the same kind of amazed, almost grateful feeling--I wish I had seen the second volume more recently, so I could point to specific scenes, but pretty much the entire thing impressed me.
Each new volume of Kodocha invigorates me. The comedy and the drama are both done so perfectly. For example, the scene in which <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Asako tries to confront Rei, and his sunglasses are finally knocked off,</span> is so tense. Then, right afterward, Rei looks at the audience and says something like, <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>"Sorry, kids, I'm not hideous."</span> I keeled over laughing--it was just incredibly well timed. Comedy isn't usually the sort of thing I take particular note of, but I can think of quite a few funny scenes in Kodocha that have stuck with me.
The final episode of Full Moon wo Sagashite made me very, very happy to be an anime fan. Best ending ever.
And... wow, this post is becoming really shoujo-y. XD
Anyway. For all its flaws, the reason I like Fafner is because it has a lot of moments/scenes that left me either halfway to being in tears or with my jaw on the floor. Not so much in the first half, of course. To name a few: <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Kazuki's return in episode 16, the lantern ED after episode 20, Soushi vanishing at the end of episode 23 and again at the end of the final episode, Michio and Mamoru's death scenes, Canon yelling after Kazuki leaves her in episode 17... etc.</span>
Episode 19 of RahXephon comes to mind. Well, the entire series, basically.
What else? AIR TV, Gankutsuou (what I've seen of it, anyway), Kaleido Star, Wolf's Rain, Hikaru no Go...

When I read the subject line, what comes to mind are episodes 23 and 26 of Irresponsible Captain Tylor. These are the grand rewards for being an anime fan.

My-HiME Episode 25 <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>The whole deal with M.I.Y.U and Alyssa Searrs. To be specific the part where Alyssa Searrs says M.I.Y.U near the end of episode 25. Just that one word alone changed the tide of the entire battle.</span>

-<span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>I got to mention the ending of Cowboy Bebop, though this time round the ending of Jupitor Juzz to me was better than the ending of CowBoy Bebop.</span>
-<span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>The ending of the Zeta movie, with the three characters. </span>

The last few episodes of Bleach have really got me going with the 'wow; i'm so glad I got to see this' sort of factor.
Other than that, I'd probably throw in Last Exile for its all around greatness and Kaleido Star.

This list is extremely disorganized, and full of disjointed sentences, but that's because the topic has me kind of excited and given the subject matter, restraining that would feel like cheating.
In the final episode of Zeta Gundam, when <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> Camille is fighting Scirocco, and Scirocco is incessantly raving about how naive Camille is to oppose his theory of Newtypes having an innate right to dominion, and Camille responds with "Better naive than evil!".</span> I think that line is the perfect refutation to anyone who accuses otaku of escapism.
Also, the final shot of the first Mobile Suit Gundam trilogy, and Amuro's words to Lalah.
Then there's Shirotsugh's detachment from Leiqunni at the end of Wings of Honneamise, in addition to his big speech. One of the best movies ever!
Episode 4 of Super-Dimensional Fortress MACROSS. Also, "Pineapple Salad".
Every single time I witness Captain Harlock's ability to unabashedly say and believe in bold things that we're taught by a cynical society to discard as childish or naive.
Oh yeah, and the music from the train ride scene in Spirited Away.
Generally speaking, every time I watch Otaku no Video, I become super-inspired and rededicate myself to the cause of being the most passionate fan possible for the reasons Toshio Okada mentioned above.
The first few minutes of the Bubblegum Crisis OAV when we see the coolest vision of the near future city ever depicted, accompanied by some of the best music ever written. I even made myself a Priss and the Replicants Hurricane Tour 2034 jacket to wear.
And who can forget one of the best moments of all:
WELCOME HOME

I guess for me it's the emotion behind the anime characters that makes me glad I'm an anime fan.
I have a penchant for the romance and romance/comedy anime and some of them can be rather emotional.
Scenes like <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Otaru beating his fist bloody on the escape pod door, showing his true feelings for his marionettes. The same goes for his marionettes for disobeying a direct order from their master to save not only the planet but him as well</span> from Saber Marionette J
In Oh, My Goddess <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>when you can feel the pain and misery between Keiichi and Belldandy when they can't even look at each other.</span>
Banner of the Stars II: <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>The entire exchange of words between Lafiel and Jinto at the end, and the emotional response by Lafiel over finding Jinto alive</span>
Those are the types of moments that make me say, "Damn, I love anime!" /images/graemlins/happy.gif
I saw a scene today that made me proud to be an anime fan
Its from SuperGALS! season 1 (as insit on calling it):
<span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>From Street 25, when Yamoto propese to Miyu. Such a great moment. </span>

Here are the one's I can think of right now:
In Kiki's Delivery Service,<span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> It was right after Kiki's first tumultuous delivery job. When she get's back to Osono's bakery, she sees a sign made out of baked bread advertising her business. She goe's in and Osono tell's her that it was her husband who made it. The husband then comes in and Kiki gives him a great big hug w/ Osono laughing out heartily. I love how it was show through the window w/ no dialogue as if you are a spectator viewing this warm moment. </span>
Another touching scene is from Ghost in the Shell: SAC, It was in the episode where<span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> the Tachikoma ran away. They went into a burial ground where the little girl's, Miki-chan, dog was buried. There, Miki-chan admitted she knew that her dog died and broke down. The Tachikoma then says that he's an AI so he can't die even if he's run over by a car. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif That scene really tugged at my heartstrings.</span>
I'm sure there are a whole hell of a lot more moments but I can't think of them right now.

Ah well; the last 7 episodes of GITS:SAC 1st Gig have now joined my list. I love the laughing man storyline, and some of the events <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'> especially the storming and mop up of section 9 in episodes 24 and 25 and motokos hate filled reaction to the guy in cyber suit in episode 21</span> really made the wait for the culmination that uch more worthwhile!
Pure Brilliance; I hope second gig is this good!

The moments in Fafner that did it for me were (spoilers for second half) <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Yukippe's total assimilation in 23 and Sakura's part-one in 22, the first of which left me feeling actually physically sick.</span> That said, they didn't exactly make me feel proud to be an anime fan or anything.

Favorite series:
Sailor Moon
Evangelion
Tenchi Muyo
Blue Seed
The Slayers
Love Hina
possibly Nadesico (picked it up dirt cheap yesterday and popped disc 1 in my player the minute I got home, it's starting to grow on me)
Characters:
all of the Sailor Soldiers but Chibi-Moon (sorry Chibiusa fans, I tried to like her.)
Ryoko
Princess Ayeka
Katsuhito Masaki (gotta love such a bad-ass old man)
Lina Inverse
Gourry Gabriev
Zelgadis
Mamoru Kusanagi
Daitetsu Kunikida
Asuka Langley Sohryu
Misato Katsuragi
Kaolla Su
Mitsune Konno
Motoko Aoyama
Favorite moments and things about these series:
The climaxes of all 5 seasons of Sailor Moon and the <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>true SuperS ending at episode 6 of Sailorstars</span>.
The climax of Sailor Moon Season 1 - <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>the Sailor Soldiers die in battle and Beryl gets a righteous ass-kicking from an angry little princess</span>.
Most of the Omake Theater bonus episodes of Blue Seed.
Love Hina - <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>episode 8, where the LH cast is inside the videogame dream that Keitaro's having. </span> Kitsune's scheming, and Su's cool inventions.
Evangelion - Asuka's debut and the Evangelions themselves.
All of these make me glad to be an anime fan.

Moments:
His and Her Circumstances: <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>When Yukino takes Arima's hand under the desk and they officially become boyfriend and girlfriend -- I watch a lot of nonanime romance and drama, but this scene takes the honor as the best! </span>
Haibane Renmei: <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>I have never seen a better dramatic treatment of suicide that actually makes you think about all its implications while actually having a story. </span>
Fushigi Yugi: not exactly a moment IN the anime, but this anime got a lot of my friends into anime and has really made me proud to be a fan.
Fruits Basket: same as FY above
Characters:
Rei: she created a different genre of woman (which not everyone likes) but, before her, I had never really seen anything like that.
Yukino: Finally I got to see this intelligent girl who is so real...plus she gets the guy and holds onto him through circumstances (while dramatic) can happen to a relationship (such as prolonged separation, jealousy, cold shoulder from other girls, family past affecting their personalities, etc)
Most of the Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien cast as well

Most recently two things come to mind.
1st Fighting Spirit/Hajime no Ippo, the series in general. I find myself sitting on the couch cheering Ippo on as I throw punches myself.
2nd The clear paying of homage to the original Ghost in the Shell movie from the 1st episode of GITS : SAC 2nd Gig where <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>Motoko jumps out of the building and you see her falling down and turning invisible</span>. That scene from the original movie is forever burned into my mind.
