View Full Version : Magical Girl and Magical Boy Appreciation/Discussion Topic

This topic is dedicated to Magical Girls and yes even Magical Boys of anime. This is to discuss your favorite characters and whatever subjects you want to discuss related to them.
The first subject I want to bring up is the idea of what makes someone a a magical person. This seems to be argued back and forth. The most common requirement seems to be a "transformation" scene, but then again I sort of consider Chrono of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (As) a Magical Boy.
However as far as I know he has no transformation scene. Meaning that Prince Adam (He-Man) is more of a magical boy than Chrono is. Yet the amount of magic He-Man uses is laughable. Add to that the fact several magical girls show don't involve fighting the forces of evil.
The second subject is on the youngest and oldest magical girl or magical boy. In one topic, Fencedude brought up the fact Fate and Nanoha of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha As are only nine years old. After I mentioned that Mao, Misora and Slyvia of Mao-chan are only eight years old. Which is the same age as Mina and Nami of Happy 7. Although I have no freaking idea who the older twin is. The youngest magical girl I know of is Utano from Gedo Otome Tai. She's five years old.
Of course I'm sure someone can find a magical girl that looks 7 years old, but is really 2,000 years old and another that looks 25 years old, but is really only 1 month old. Of course when looking for a more realisitc youngest and oldest, such people are silly choices if you ask me.
In any case discuss these subjects or bring up your own. The main idea here is show appreciation for magical girls and magical boys. Sometime later I'll name some of my favorite magical girls myself. I just want to get the topic started for now.
Originally this was just going to be a topic asking "Who is the youngest/oldest magical girl?", but then I decided a general topic on magical girls is better and thus we may as well include magical boys as well. So go figure.

So does Li Syaoran count as a Magical boy?
EmperorBrandon
01-04-2006, 01:39 PM
Well, as far as oldest magical girl, they're not supposed to be adults in the first place, so it's hard to find a place to draw the line. Hmm... maybe if we count Sailor Pluto? As far as youngest, in Ojamajo Doremi, doesn't Doremi's sister become a magical girl? She's definitely pretty young.
And I don't think transformation is necessarily a requirement. There are quite a few that don't have a henshin sequence. Still more would have to be disqualified if you don't count the actual girl transforming (for instance, Sakura in CCS doesn't really have to transform herself to use magical powers. She already has them, and transforms the key to use the cards.)

Since Sakura counts as a Magical Girl, I'd say yes. After all Sakura doesn't have a transformation scene either. Unless you count changing into a costume. Which in a sense Syaoran does also. Although he doesn't exactly have the variety of battle outfits from what I remember. Speaking of which. Some may argue whether or not he counts, but Chrono of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (As) is one of my favorite magical boys right now. I kind of like how in one episode of the first season he appears to block both Nanoha and Fate during their battle.

Other than his ceremonial clothes, the only other battle outfit AFAIR is the outfit that Tomoyo gives him in the second movie to match Sakura. If we are considering "magical boys", it's hard to think of him not as one IMHO...
I'd say transformation is part of it, but not what makes someone a magical person. Otherwise you'd have to include Ronin Warriors.

Ahh - I have a question about magical girls/boys... I was recently kindly corrected by Fencedude when I referred to Mai-HiME as 'magical girl' anime - He informed me that it was not...
Now - I haven't seen too many shows/films involving magical persons... I liked the first 6 episodes of Mai-HiME very much - what else should I have a look at? Anthing with crazy transformations/general bizarro/evil entities/spells/familiars/psychic powers/supernatural abilities is starting to become quite appealing. I particularly like the idea of everyday characters having incredible mind-bending skills...
I know it's slightly off topic asking for recommendations here, but I need to see more of this kind of thing before I'm able to participate in threads such as this!

I agree that a transformation sequence isn't nessecary for a character to be considered a magic girl/boy. I think what does matter is the ability to cast some type of spell, or be able to use a device to cast the spell(s) that comes from a magical means does though.

I think it's subjective, but some shows are too complex to fit genre archetypes and therefore certain people say are not part of that genre. I haven't seen Mai Hime so I can't comment, but I also think a show can be about magical girls without being a Sailor Moon clone.

Yeah once you get old enough you become a "Magical Woman" or a "Magical Man" instead. Still for the record if people want to discuss Magical Women and Magical Men in the thread they can. Besides a Magical Woman is just an Adult Magical Girl. Besides I'm sure someone will want to mention Agnes of "My Wife is a Magical Girl" and she's an adult. Exactly how old is Sailor Pluto? I haven't seen much of Doremi to be honest. Still if the person in question is younger than "Five Years" old, she beats out Utano of "Gedo Otome Tai" for youngest magical girl obviously.

Good point there. Especially since as I said in my experience you're more likely to see a transformation scene for the magical girls than the magical boys. Of course that probably means I need to watch more series.

I don't think Sailor Pluto really has an age, being the Time Guardian and all. Or if she does it'll be like Chibi-Usa and be in the hundreds since in Neo Tokyo people age much differently.

Well, it does seem soom magical girl shows have the sentai element to them, first and foremost Sailor Moon (and imitators afterwards like Tokyo Mew Mew). It's interesting that many consider Sailor Moon to be the prime example of a magical girl series when it might not really be considered the "pure" form of a magical girl show.

Doremi is a Magical Girl Series where the plot partially involves the main female Doremi becoming a Witch. Sorry, but I'm not going to disqualify someone from being a magical girl just because she's a Witch. However at the same one could say it takes more than simply being a Witch to be a magical girl. That part is a bit debatable. Ah well.
Also speaking of possible magical girls outside of anime, like others I personally feel JEM is a Magical Girl. Yes I was one of the people that watched it. As for Windy, well I haven't seen much of Capser. So I can't comment in general.

It's just an alternate romanization of he system (going from the Kunrei style I think, in which "shi", "sha", "shu", and "sho" are romanized as "si", "sya", "syu", and "syo"). They're still pronounced the same regardless. Personally, I don't like that kind of romanization.
In Pinyin (Chinese romanization), his given name is "Xiǎoláng". The Japanese romanization (Shaoran/Syaoran) is an approximation of it and is pronounced similarly.

Since we don't seem to have true definition of what exactly constitutes a "magical girl show", I wouldn't be totally sure about "Otome" because according to Mimi's original post it might qualify because Otome's seem to have transformation sequences. Do you deny it for the fact that their powers seem to be technological based? For that matter, is the definition of "magic" just technology that we don't understand?

Interesting. That's the first time I've ever seen that considered a spoiler. Then again maybe I'm too used to it being casually mentioned as common knowledge. Heh I'll spoil mark it for now, but I'm not sure if I really consider it that large of a spoiler. Especially since it was more of a one shot joke.
Which brings up another subject. Some Magical Girls deserved a lot more Magical Girl time than they were given in their series if you ask me. Although if they ever made a direct sequel to Magical Project S, I'd hope Konoha (Funkie Connie) would get outfit that's not as similiar to the one Sasami (Pretty Sammy) wears
Heck I want a third season of Nanoha because in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha As Hayate's first entrance as magical girl was cool and I want to see her as magical girl in more than just one episode. I'm also still bitter that Lucky 3 of Happy 7 the TV Manga got such a small role. Not sure why I'm marking the last one since the ending credits give it away...
As I've stated earlier, I also don't think transformation "makes" something a magical show. However, it would be nice to lay down a definition so we can all be clear on what is or isn't included in this genre. I've never seen any of the Mai shows but descriptions seem to point to it having girls who use magic. However, Bible Black also has girls using magic and I doubt anyone's going to go around calling that a "Magical Girl Show." So I guess I'm just saying, it'd be nice to have some boundaries. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

For which I'm extremely glad. One reason the Pretty Sammy OVAs suffered is the OVA could not escape the shadow of Tenchi Muyo. I mean Ryoko, Ayeka, and Tenchi took up too much of the focus.
However because the "Tenchi Muyo" angle was dropped from Magical Project S. The series was able to shine on its own. At the same time the story was better structured and didn't feel like a book with the pages torn out.
Magical Project S is definitely one of the better magical girl series. I really should rewatch it myself some day. Especially to view the extras on the DVDs. Which I haven't viewed much. Also yeah I'd love to see a Magical Project S direct sequel with a sentai theme. Too bad the movie was just a joke....

Is it bad that even through I watched the entire series of Happy 7 and some scenes several time. That I never noticed Tamon has longer hair in her transformed state? Ah well I'm still bothered by the fact I have trouble telling the twins apart when they don't speak.

I'll need to watch the introduction again just to tell which of the girls are which. /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif I don't normally have trouble with names to faces in anime, but when a lot of girls get introduced at once...
BTW, is the evil-looking girl Kokuanten? If so, then voiced by Kikuko Inoue... Wow... don't hear hear her as those types too often (reminds me of the talk about Bridget Hoffman not playing evil characters on the English track right now). Well... I have heard Kikuko Inoue voice Panther in SMJ and Haruna in TMiL2.
And by the way, is the main character's bad luck limited to the first episode, because of that evil spirit that was inside of her, or does it continue throughout the series? Heh, that kind of reminded me of Seina from Tenchi Muyo! GXP, except better, since Amano is a cute girl and Seina is not /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Well to be honest the twins are the only two I have trouble with. However if/when you do watch the introduction again. Listen to how each twin sounds when she speaks. Despite the fact the two have the same voice actress there is a definite difference.

Yes her name is Kokuanten. I kind of like her and heh I made a prediction about her in regards to a later episode. A much later episode and I freaking got it backwards.

Well her bad luck is lessened quite a bit, but she still continues to have problems on occasion. Mainly because she is kind of clumsy naturally. Still since I can't understand Japanese, it's hard to say completely.

Oh yeah I should note this much about Happy 7. Don't skip over the "transformation" scenes too fast. Through out the episodes you'll see the transformation scenes for the rest of the girls. Although obviously the twins share one. Too bad Tamon doesn't have her own henshin tune. She shares the same one as Kuriya. Yeah Mina and Nami share the same one, but they transform at the same time.
Speaking of which Happy 7 needs a season 2. Partially because a second season is the perfect excuse to make up for Happy 7's ultimate crime. Lucky 3 only appears in one episode that's it. I mean it makes sense somewhat given Amano's life sucks. So perhaps she's an unlucky magical girl too. With a season 2 they could make up some excuse where Happy 7 need some help and Amano convinces them to let her fight as Lucky 3. Assuming a season 2 is even possible story wise.
The funny thing is in some ways. Happy 7 is like a second season of a harem anime. Amano Sakogami is like the newly introduced member of the harem. Kikunosuke already has his harem of nine girls established from the start. Plus early he's already a confident fighter. So yeah "Magical Girl Sentai Harem".

To help revive this thread here's a new topic of discussion, what magical girl series are you currently watching?

Well, I just finished rewatching the first half of Card Captor Sakura. Now I need to order the boxset for the second half.
I just started watching Sugar, A Little Snow Fairy (not sure if this is technically a magical girl show, or not, though). Wow, is this the cutest anime EVER, or what? And I'm really impressed by the quality of animation on this--it looks even better than Cardcaptor Sakura, which I thought was a pretty good looking show.
