View Full Version : Patlabor TV Collections

I really want this show so I am wondering if the boxes (http://www.animeondvd.com/reviews2/disc_reviews/1763.php) are worth a purchase? Or should I wait for a new release?
They're worth buying if you like Patlabor. The only complaint I've heard is the lack of a dub, but that's only a factor if you absolutely hate subtitles.

The entire TV Series is dubbed.
The 1st OVA is dubbed.
The 2nd only only has the 1st disc dubbed, remaining 2 in the set is subtitles only.
All 3 movies are dubbed.
Ah, well there you go. Slightly inconsistant for the dub fans, but not a huge loss in the end.

Considering how long CPM took to get this show out the door (the original release schedule was 1 disc per 6 months), I doubt waiting is going to net you anything better in the near future. The TV boxsets are an absolute steal, and the New Files set is the best bargain of the franchise provided you don't mind subtitles. The first two movies are being re-released soon, but they're best enjoyed after spending some episodes getting familiar with the characters (just as with Ghost in the Shell).

Definitely worth it. The show's entertaining and the releases are pretty good for the age of the show. Considering all the boxes (except the first OVA set) are MSRP at about $10 per disc, I doubt that there's going to be a cheaper release any time soon.
On top of that, you can get all 3 boxes of the TV series (11 discs) and both OVA sets (2 and 3 discs, respectively) for less than $95 delivered from DDD. I don't think there's a better deal on an anime series out there.
Edit: Just noticed you were in Sweden, so it won't be as cheap but it'll still be a decent deal.

There have been a couple of threads on Patlabor already recently. This one is specifically about a certain release, so I'll leave it open for now, but as it progresses another mod may close this thread.

How does the rest of Patlabor compare to The New Files? (http://forums.animeondvd.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=1195419&page=&view=&s b=5&o=&vc=1)

The last few volumes of the TV series and the OVA never came out as singles. Along with the missing dub on the last two volumes of the OVA, it looks like it was rushed out the door to 'get it over with already'. As such, I doubt there's going to be any different or improved versions anytime soon. I say don't wait, pick it up now -- this is a really worthwhile series, after all.

I just noticed my thread had been moved so I hear by thank you all for your input. I didn't plan on spending anymore money on anime but I couldn't help myself. /images/graemlins/happy.gif
Ordered Patlabor - New File DVD Collection and Patlabor - TV Collections 1-3 at a total cost of $132 that's like $9.5 per disc.

I can't recommend this series enough. Captain Gohto is one of my all-time favorite characters, and the series is entertaining and amusing. For the price, you can't afford to miss it.

IMO they're worth it. I finished the original OVA series not too long ago & just recently took the plunge into the TV series by buying the first boxset (At my local Media Play for 40% off the already low price /images/graemlins/cool.gif). It's a good series & at the prices that CPM is offering for each set, I'd say go for it.

Good deal. Let us know how you like it.

Yes, let us know what you make of Gohto, I love to hear other people's opinions on him. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Gohto? He's one of my favorite characters of all time. Being only a recent purchaser (and viewer) of Patlabor (all of it), at first I didn't like him much. Over the course of the series however, I grew to love his lackadaisical attitude, and the fact that he seems to know/figure out everything way before everyone else. Of course, that doesn't mean he's going to share it with you. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
I am, of course, referring to the Japanese dub version, which is the only way to watch this series (and coming from a normal Dub advocate, take it to heart).
I wrote a review of the entirety of the series, but be warned...it's spoiler-ific: Patlabor Review (halfway down the page) (http://www.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=messageboard.viewThread&group ID=100752873&page=1&EntryID=4090809&CategoryID=0&g et=1&adTopicId=9&lastpagesent=0&Mytoken=5A0AEB87-78BE-4F88-A01B8A0A1B156838623224328)

Seeing as how the post comparing the New Files and Patlabor TV is not lost forever, I wanted to resurrect this thread to get opinions on the TV, the New Files, and the OAV, especially because of the TRSI sale.
I remember watching them years and years ago, unsubbed, on tapes from the local Japanese bookstore, and collecting all the patlabor model kits and tankoubans, and even getting the first OAV series subbed on tape. But I'd like to know where to start now, or if I should just dive in and buy everything... /images/graemlins/happy.gif

IMHO.. Start with the TV series. Complete the TV series with the New Files. See the OVAs if you want. Then watch all the movies in complete awe. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

You may want to start with the original series OVA -- in the span of seven episodes it gives you a pretty good overview of what to expect from the series as a whole in terms of range of stories. (the comedy of the TV series, the drama and intrigue of the movies, etc). They're also some of the best episodes IMO, and the animation quality is a touch above that of the TV show. But yeah, basically get it all, it doesn't get much better than this. /images/graemlins/happy.gif
You know about the upcoming April rerelease of the first movie, correct? Whether you go for the vanilla version or the fancy box, I would definitely wait for this one -- it can't be any worse than the Manga version. (link (http://www.bandaivisual.us/products.html)) Second movie is also in the works.
