The porn mags Light's reading feature women in lingerie. Are they nude in the Japanese version?

Read the credits page. It is VIZ's policy now to state any modifications or censoring on the credits page with disclaimers. If it was edited, you'll see something like "Some scenes of nudity have been modified . . .", like it says in Zatch Bell.

It says, "Some art has been modified from the Japanese version." But the other volumes had the same disclaimer, and they didn't look like they'd have anything edited.

Yeah, that just means they changed the SFX and other panel text for translations. If there was any censoring, it would say what it was, like nudity or "underage smoking".

There may be other forms of editing. For instance, if there are many real world trademarks and logos in a manga, permission is needed to use those trademarks and logos. If not, they get edited out.

They're wearing bra and pants in the original (I assume this is the beginning of Page 17?) as well - just checked my Japanese copy.

So why does his dad care? It's more like a Victoria's Secret catalogue or Maxim than pr0n.

Because Light's a perfect, model son, who is on a straight track to college, not a kid messing about with teenage junk, and looking at porn (whether or not there is underwear on the model in a particular picture) doesn't fit into that image he has of his son. Just because it isn't flat out nudity, doesn't mean it isn't a porno mag.
