View Full Version : Is there a thing such as gay hentai?

First off, I'm straight. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I read a lot on the Internet and in anime magazines about yaoi, I know what this is. However... I don't recall having really ever seen something that would be akin to an anime version of yaoi. Or maybe a gay version of hentai, if you get what I mean. Sorry if I'm confusing terms, I'm not an hardcore anime fan anymore.

Are there really gay anime series, and is this stuff even distributed in DVD format? Are there DVD releases of that kind in Region 1, or would that be too much of a taboo? Or maybe that it wouldn't cather to an audience that would be big enough... this genre is prolific in the manga form, but is there enough demand in Japan so that animated cartoons are produced, perharps even more in the vein of homosexual animated pornography?

It's stricly out of curiosity's sake for the genre. I find that anime is a wonderful medium to let someone open his mind -- it sure did help me a lot with that. Of course considering my sexual orientation, I'd feel repulsed to view that kind of material, probably even lighter romantic comedies featuring gay couples.

However, I don't know, maybe something that would be the equivalent of Queer As Folk would be an entertaining diversion from the typical stereotypes that abound in anime. Someone told me about the show named "Gravitation", saying that it was PG-like.

But first and foremost, can anyone answer my original question?

Of course please tell me if anything is offensive in that thread, I assure you that this is meant to be candid. Sorry if such is the case.

Err...of course there is.

Errr...if you're asking about animated yaoi released on R1, there is:

-Legend of the Blue Wolves
-Level C
-Sensitive Pornograph
-Kizuna
-My Sexual Harassment

And...that's all I can think of off the top of my head. Although yaoi isn't strictly homosexual as such - it's made primarily by women, for a female audience. Gay men aren't the target audience at all.

Yeah, of course I knew that it was mainly produced for females.

I was referring to the content itself.

And that'd be it thus far for R1. Well, unless you want to count the spoof off-shot, Samurai Fantasy. It seems to be based very loosedly off Kenshin, but...

Of course there's animated yaoi! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif And animated yuri, too! I don't have any hardcore yaoi yet, but I plan to change that when the signature edition of Kizuna comes out this spring...

Actually, I know straight guys that aren't bothered by it; even the hardcore stuff.

Just because you aren't interested in men doesn't mean you ABSOLUTELY MUST be repulsed by an image of two of them kissing or something. I know you can't really help it if you are, but you don't have to be soley because you're straight.

Hell, I'm not interested in women like that, but Uranus is one of my favourite Sailor Scouts, and I still want to get Utena after having enjoyed a little bit of the manga.

Utena is AMAZING. Take advantage of the CPM sale RIGHT NOW! You will not regret it, I promise.
I also watch THE L WORD which is all lesbians getting it on. Does nothing for me sexually but dang if it isn't compelling drama. A good story is a good story regardless of what naughty bits are fitting into what holes.

I know I won't regret it, but I don't know if I can spend the $100 in one go right now. I might have to get it bit by bit as it's repriced. Big chunks of cash are harder to spend at once than little chunks over time, even if the little chunks may add up to a bit more in the end. :/

Yes, Virginia, there is gay hentai. It exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no gay hentai! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

[the next paragraph starts "Not believe in gay hentai! You might as well not believe in fairies" but I figure I better stop while I'm ahead! /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif]

You didn't actually ask a question about Gravitation ^^;

Gravitation is a fun little series about a band's rise to fame, and the hyperactive lead singer's tempestuous (gay) relationship with the world's moodiest author. It's mostly a comedy, but it has plenty of plot twists and angst along the way as well. There is no sex on-screen, though there is (vague) mention of it happening off-screen.

I wouldn't call it one of my favourite series, but I love it a lot. There are reviews for it all over the place, including this site, so if it sounds like it would appeal to you it shouldn't be hard to find out more.

As for the main subject at hand... Yaoi is all well and good, but I'd love some actual gay porn anime. Gengoroh Tagame's manga is in desperate need of an anime adaptation /images/graemlins/noseblee.gif

If you like Tagame´s works, I´d highly recommend (btw. both links probably NSFW) Matsu Takeshi (http://shiy.main.jp/takemaru/anatawohonmein.html) and Masanori (http://danshi.jp/2004/top/index.html). I´d be all over an anime adaption of Sanbiki ga Iku!! /images/graemlins/noseblee.gif and some Kinniku Otoko manga in general ^_^
And to satisfact my Bishônen longings, I´d so wish for one of Nobi Nobita (aka Nariko Enomoto) works to be adapted into anime /images/graemlins/noseblee.gif

I have all 5 Gravitation DVDs (and all 12 volumes of the manga) and love them very much. Gravitation is the story of Shuichi Shindo, a young man dreaming of becoming a J-pop star like his boyhood idol, legend vocalist Ryuichi Sakuma. He and his best friend Hiro have formed their own band "Bad Luck" and signed on with a major record label, but it's a long road to the top. First of all the mentally unstable lead singer of their rival band ASK is out to destroy them, but the majority of Shuichi and Hiro's problems are internal. Their president is conniving and manipulative, their constantly panicked producer is in desperate need of tranquilizers, and their gun-toting manager thinks all of life's problems can be solved with the right weaponary. Plus they get a third member thrown into their band without really having any choice in the matter. As I was saying, a LONG road to the top...

And then there's Shuichi's love life. Of all the people in the world, he chooses the coldest, crabbiest, and most sarcastic person in the world to fall in love with. Shuichi must love pain, he becomes smitten when Yuki Eiri insults his lyrics and informs him he has "zero talent". From there the two form a turbulent relationship. The words "emotional support" are not in Yuki's dictionary, and despite being a famous romance novalist he seems to know nothing about love. He constantly yells, insults, and throws Shuichi out; and love-sick Shu-chan always comes back for more. Who cares if Yuki is mean? Who cares if he has issues? Who cares if he's ENGAGED?! He loves Yuki!

This series is hilarious, the music is great, and no matter what happens you always find yourself rooting for the main character and his relationship, no matter how difficult it gets.

To a certain extent. I love the manga, but it does get a little too ridiculous in certain parts, bless its heart. The TV series stays more on-message in terms of presenting the love story, and its plot is more straightforward... which IMO makes it a better choice for someone who just wants to dip his toes in the pool, so to speak.

I'd advise the OP to skip the OVA, though.

I liked this RPG because it was kinda ecological and also thought-provoking, it was too cool to fight monsters in order to make every creature in the world appear again... when I first played it as a teen, it really left quite a mark on me. /images/graemlins/happy.gif
