I"s volume 7 - single edit (title update)

Hi,

Go figure this! I"s volume 5 has uncensored nudity on pages 178 - 181 when Itsuki <span style='color:#dddddd;background:#dddddd'>drops her towel in front of an art class. But she is in fact wearing a skin suit over underwear.</span> /images/graemlins/stunned1.gif

So, did Viz decide not to censor because they've wised up, because the nudity is not gratuitous in its story context, or page 180 /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Somehow I feel cheated.

But I have to say, there were some real unedited nipples in volume 4 too... when Iori is washing herself, you can see nipples on one of the girls in the background

I agree, it'll still be hard for me to get 4 if I can't get 1-3 uncensored. Hopefully they restore the nipples in 1-3 for any additional printings. I guarentee I'll get all 15 volumes if they do this.

Lots of reasons why they might have done this:

1) Sales were low, so they hope un censoring it will help.
2) They never really had the permission of the Japanese and they found out.
3) Despite removing the nipples they got complaints on the other sexually suggestive material, so they wised up and finally realized that it was pointless to remove the nipples for a older teen title.
4) Someone finally read the letters we sent them.
5) The person who made this desision has left Viz.

Whatever happened at Viz, if it means that they'll go back and fix Descendents of Darkness vol 4, I will be happy.

Well, the words "consistancy" and "VIZ" have never been mentioned together too often. This could just be a something that slipped by in editorial. Now if the trend of no editing continues, then I think we may be on to something. I did notice that several bookstores I frequent had many more copies of volume 4 than previous volumes, leaving me wondering why interest may have suddenly surged in the book. Like everybody else, I was always perplexed as to why VIZ chose to edit I's despite the same age rating as Video Girl Ai and why they thought no one would be bothered by the other very sexual material in the book, but I'll support it wholeheartedly if they decide to reverse their editing decision... /images/graemlins/happy.gif

If this is true, it's excellent news. Like BlazinTy, however, I'll be waiting for a second, corrected printing of the books before I spring for them. That goes for Descendants of Darkness as well.

I broke down and decided to buy it to show support for I''s being unedited. Don't know if I'll buy other volumes until vol 1-3 are rereleased unedited, but decided a little upblip on sales of vol 5 might help convince Viz not to do this again.

This is a very good sign. I''s is the reason why I was completely boycotting new titles from Viz, but seeing this has given me a little hope. It gives me a reason to consider buying some new titles, but I'm still holding out on buying I''s until they print it properly.

Not a good idea to refer to scanlations against the rules I beleive. If you were comparing it to the japanese tanks it would be a different story.

I was just comparing the two becasue I curious myself on how VIz would handle the nudity because from what I found, the amount of fan service is no different to the level in Video Girl Ai. Ignoring my post which I have just deleted, lets stick to the comparison between the Japanese tanks and the domestic tanks. My what I gather and from the original poster on the subject on I's Volume 5, I can see that Viz may have changed their stance on how they are releasing the manga. If the rest of the volumes that will be released for hte next 10 months or so, we will see whether Viz will leave everything intact from Volume 6 to 10. I only buying to support the manga so I can finish collection the manga but even if there may some edits but doesn't lower down my view on I's. Bear in mind that the edits in I's is a lote better handled than CMX did for TenTen which I will not discuss here and I only making a comparsion. Anyone, for a 16+ title for I's, full frontal nudity with no edits for Volume 5 is a good sign. Wasn't the author of I's gave Viz permission to go ahead with the edits?

That's not necessarily true. We've had an issue on this board in fact where a "scanlated" page was altered artistically from the japanese tank. But, either way it doesn't really matter - discussions of scanlations are against the rules and while the odd utterance in passing does happen (can't hide that they do exist...) some people here make chronic reference to them, and that needs to stop.

Viz didn't edit Video Girl Ai, but the original release of some of the chapters that went into volumes 4,5 (&amp;6?) had some panty-less shots and other material that apparently offended some prudes over there. Sadly, Katsura and the publisher caved and censored the artwork for subsequent printings. Ironically, some of the following volumes had even more nudity and sexual situations than they changed, so at least the complaints didn't seem to change future artwork.

Unfortnately, Viz was unable to obtain the orignal artwork (or wouldn't ask for it).

I remember a rep at one of the conventions a year or so ago saying that they asked for the uncut version and were denied by the Japanese licensor.

Unless I missed some, vol 6 doesn't have any nipples and vol 7 only has one outline of a nipple.

Vol 8 then has Hot Springs and nipples galore.

That's a LOT of steam then.

Vol 5 still makes no sense. Even if they weren't 'real' nipples, it's hardly likely to avoid complaints.

So, either they got complaints for vol 5 and they decided to continue censoring vols 7+, or they just had some internal issues that caused those nipples to slip past the editors who approved this ridiculous editing in the first place. Shame on them.

Either way, they've lost my sale for all the volumes.

I'm so totally enjoying the story (again) and it's one of the reasons why I'm still buying it, despite the nipple-edits.

Like I stated before, if you're in it for the nipples, then don't buy and/or return the english-versions since VIZ is censoring it. Buy the japanese-version.

If you're more into the wonderfully fascinating love-story, then it's a keeper.

It's really that simple.

I'm buying the manga because I'm of a fan of Katsura's works since I completed Video Girl Ai and to support the release of the manga of I's. Just imagine there are nipples and just enjoy the story. Simple as that.

That's generally my position on it as well. Maybe I wouldn't be bothered by it if they were consistent about what they do. It really did not change the age rating or acceptability for younger audiences. I'd understand if it was loli, but it really is not. I also don't understand how a small nipple is bad, but they missed the panty crotch shots that might fill half a page. Very similar imagery in Video Girl Ai (by same artist) was left alone by the same US publisher, though unfortunately that title was changed by the Japanese. I don't want to be rewarding the US suits for deciding what isn't good for me to see when it is legal.
