I can't find any sets at store.popular.com.sg except fro FMA.
So where can I get info on the other releases and prices?
No info on this in any of the other threads.
Thanks.

email them directly, through their site, & ask if any online stores that sell their DVDs do mail order to your country.
I'm also curious as to why AoD wants to start reviewing the new Odex sets when they don't seem to be available anywhere. Does AoD really have that many Singaporean readers?

It isn't necessarily for Singaporean readers. Odex used to release some good anime series that were relatively cheap. Sometimes the English translation took a strange turn, but their releases were generally good, clean, solid releases. I picked up Pretear from them, and liked the quality. They also had some titles that hadn't been released in the US, which was another reason to buy their titles.

ODEX replied that they are pushing for Popular to carry their DVDs.
They said to be patient.
Still only FMA available.

I'd like for someone else than Popular to carry their DVD's. Popular's international shipping prices are RIDICULOUS.

I wonder how many etailers they have to choose from? Maybe Popular's the only game in town, at least for legit DVD releases? I wonder if yesasia would be a feasible option for Odex.

I bought from them quite some time ago for the Boys Be box. I don't recall the pricing for EMS being much different from buying an R2 DVD from Japan at the time. Have they changed their policies or something?

I remember getting only one shipping option for the FMA set and it cost about as much as the set itself. No thanks.

Just for the heck of it I just began an order for FMA... $38 for shipping? I believe that price is Singapore Dollars, which equates to ~$23. That's DEFINITELY in line with regular EMS shipping rates. Now if that $38.70 is in USD... I got a big ol' F-that for them.
Sure, $38.70 is more expensive than the box, but that would make the cost of the first 14 episodes ~$50 total. Buying the R1s you're looking at what, 3 discs and a little bit, bringing the total cost, going by $20 a disc, to around what, $65? Plus you have the "lovely" compression problems FUNi was having at the time with the R1s. Had the Odex set been available when I was first starting, I'd definitely have bought that instead.
naiera
01-09-2006, 05:05 AM
I don't really give a damn about Odex' FMA release anymore, seeing as I have the R1 singles vol. 1-6. I might have been mistaken in thinking the shipping price was in USD, but I don't care, I'd never use EMS for something that small anyway! Give me options, damnit. Plus they added a $3 "carton charge" for international shipments. WTF? Screw that.
And by getting the R1's from FUNi I have something that looks infinitely better on my shelf than that seriously hax0r bootleggy looking thing from Odex. Well, except for the fact that the spines on the FMA DVD's are probably the worst ever, because they clash so much with each other...

They actually respond to the form within a couple days, too, which impressed me quite a bit. If what the rep says is accurate, the first sets for Monster and Agatha Christie on DVD will be available in Singapore in March, and hopefully on Popular soon thereafter.

Odex have adviesed me;

As overseas customers, you can only buy ODEX's DVD through Singapore's POPULAR Bookshop because they happened to have a YAHOO internet portal.
[/ QUOTE ]
Popular have not yet got Odex on their online site.
So its a waiting game.
If FMA from Odex is subtitled, I'll get them because the subtitles will probably be larger than Funi's (can't think any could get worse!). Shipping might be expensive, but the discs are cheaper to compensate.
Any other region's legit release of a Funi/clone title is tempting, if English subtitled, as the font size is likely to be larger.

Not that you shouldn't get the Odex release if you want, but the UK release of FMA has different subs to the US release (in fact, all FUNi's shows over here do now, Burst Angel, FMA, Fruits Basket etc). They are bigger and clearer; I guess a similar size to ADV's.

Picked up ODEX's release of Full Metal Alchemist Volume 1 (4 DVDs covering Episodes 1 to 14) from Singapore when I was there very recently (for the Chinese New Year holidays). Just watched the DVDs today. I concur with <font color="RoyalBlue">guyverfanboy</font> - the release is very good with some scattered typos in the English subtitles. Overall, it's good enough for me that I've decided to go the ODEX R3 route for collecting the Full Metal Alchemist series. The packaging may be digipak but it is neatly done and the DVDs have some of the same R2J cover art printed on them. For the SRP of SGD39.90, the 4-disc Volume 1 is well worth it.
If ODEX can reduce the incidence of typos in the English subtitles for their subsequent anime DVD releases, it would be great. Can't wait for ODEX's R3 release of Monster with the multi-disc Volume 1 due for release soon /images/graemlins/happy.gif

If it's really just a few typos here and there the subs are as good as FUNi's. Many of the R1 companies have sadly adopted the common "Intertron" english grammar issues, which is really silly. Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the releases where they frequently mess up, but they really shouldn't, if the guy doing the subs has graduated high school...

What do you mean a lot episodes crammed in 1 DVD? The volumes are multi-disc sets. For example, the Full Metal Alchemist, Volume 1 set comprises 4 DVDs with 2 episodes in DVD #1, and 4 episodes each in DVDs #2, #3 and #4. If 4 episodes are a lot of episodes crammed into 1 DVD... /images/graemlins/stunned1.gif /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif
I don't have the R2J discs of the respective shows to compare the ODEX R3 release against but looking at the ODEX R3 release independently, the video and audio quality is rather good (say a rating of A-/B+ thereabouts).

I think it's because the multi-disc sets are labelled as "Volume 01", "Volume 02", etc. The person has thus automatically made a presumption that 1 volume = 1 DVD.

That's again jumping to conclusions based on presumptions.
Have a look at the ODEX site on their anime VCD releases (link (http://www.odex.com.sg/indexVcd.html)). Nearly all of them come with English subtitles. If only Chinese subtitles are now available for the VCD release, an edition with Englsih subtitles would be released shortly, whether on VCD or DVD.

Well, from what I've seen so far (correct me if I'm wrong /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif), for the Odex VCD releases with Mandarin subtitles, no English subtitle version would be released later (eg. Fruits Basket VCD Vol. 1-2) unless it's in DVD format (old eg. Tenchi Muyo In Love 2 DVD/recent eg. Full Metal Alchemist DVD Vol. 1) or even in English dub. (eg. Vandread The Second Stage VCD)

My parents visited Singapore recently, so I asked them to pick up the Chrono Crusade, FMA and Burst Angel sets for me to check out on the cheap. They found the FMA and CC sets and one of the two BA sets, but the hopeless shop clerk somehow handed them BA as vcds rather than dvds (with utterly dreadful video and sound quality - how can anyone spend money on vcds in this day and age? You'd have to pay me to watch them) and they didn't know enough to tell the difference (the fact that the dvd box had room for 3 discs and they were given a set of about 8 in a plastic case should probably have been a hint, but oh well).
Frankly, after checking out the discs, I consider them a waste of money. The video quality is below acceptable standards as far as I'm concerned (and I'm fairly tolerant - I own and don't particularly mind the video quality on the legit Hong Kong Naruto sets, which look decent most of the time but do suffer from stuffing so many episodes per disc). The menus are dreadful and overall they just look like a backyard job. Frankly, if that's the best they can do then I don't care if they go out of business. I have no intention of buying anymore of their discs. You're better off buying R1s at double the price - at least you know you can expect half-decent video quality.
Just my 2c.

It's available from Popular right now.
Here's a link. (http://www.popular.com.sg/jsp/product/product_detail.jsp?vca001=552&vpd001=61240)
This is the one I've been really hoping to find. It's the first set Odex has done that isn't available in the US yet. /images/graemlins/happy.gif

I've ordered the first Monster DVD set from them, and watched it. It's a bare set, but the English subtitles are quite decent. A while ago, when I purchased Boys Be from Odex, I remember frowning now and again that the English translation sounded off, but the one from Monster never sounded unnatural or wrong. Of course, my Japanese isn't good enough to determine how accurate it was...
Anyway, it's a great series, and I hope that Odex will be doing the rest of it in DVD as well.

VCD was a format that was popular in the era while we were still pumping videocassettes... :sd:

VCD is popular because in Singapore parents tend to buy the cheaper things for their children... but they are no longer in production...
As for DVDs the there is now on a Sales by the name of TAKA 11th Craziest Toy Sales, where DVDs are going for SGD$20 per volume. till the 12th of this month... which is this weekend
I got my Trinity Blood(odex DVD) there. Also available is Shakugan No Shana, Monster, FMA, Mahoraba, and Inuyasha the Movies
Not promoting or anything, just to let you all know.

Unfortunately, that would require being in Singapore to buy those discs.
Maybe when my friend gets married and flies me out there, I'll buy some ODEX releases again. :)
