While I only own a few R2's, I figured that I would ask here. Is there a "market value" for things? The reason why I ask is that I'm eyeing my Tsukihime R2 box and wondering. I'm not to familiar with Ebay, or even some of the Japanese auction sites.

While I'm not aiming to sell it, I've always wondered if there is a sort of "pricing guide" for collectors.

Uh.. not really. The C-scale doesn't apply to DVDs since they depreciate exponentially once you get them.

Ah, was wondering in general. I've become a Yahoo Japan auction junkie as of late. Oh well, was just wondering /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

It's been my experience that R2 anime DVDs fetch very little of their actual value on eBay. Most people are looking for R1 DVDs. Also, you have to compete with countless bootlegs (which sellers sometimes advertise as "imports"). Another thing is that once a title has been released in R1, the R2 version essentially becomes worthless (unless the R1 release has been f'd up in some way).

For example, I listed the entire R2 collection of Excel Saga on eBay, complete with both LE art boxes, and got $50 for the lot (the 13 volumes originally cost about that much each). More recently, I listed the R2 Japanese language version of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust for $15, and it did not sell at that price.

If you're going to sell a R2 DVD on eBay, it might help to do a little research first. Make sure there aren't 50 people offering bootleg copies first. Then make sure it hasn't been released in R1. If that's the case, you might not do too badly.

I don't know if simply there are few to none Japanese R2s on ebay, but I can never find them. I use the search terms "anime" and "r2" or "region 2" but all I get are UK discs. If nobody can find Japanese R2s, then nobody's going to bid on them.

Still, you may be better off making friends with other R2 collectors. They'll give you a fairer price than ebay.

I don't see them too often, either. Maybe it's because most people who buy R2 releases are hardcore collectors who would rather keep everything they buy. Or maybe they know they'll only get a small fraction of what they paid by selling the discs on eBay. I do see R2s on eBay on occasion, but they usually don't sell for much.

I don't see them often or selling for much either, but I see a ton of import Japanese Laserdiscs. Certainly a good chuck of those come from speciality stores which grossly unrealistic prices who are trying to off-load them as rare collector's items, but it does occur to me that maybe the Japanese R2s on ebay are not listed with "region 2" or "r2" in the title?

Weird - Japanese CDs are sold on ebay as well.

Might the lack of DVDs be because either LDs don't sell in Japan well anymore, so a global market is better, &/or the region restriction ebay sometimes imposes for selling outside region zones is applied harder. (Also because there is no ebay.jp? - not many Japanese sellers like Paypal I've noticed)

Sellers from HK & Singapore also sell J-LDs, I've got some from outside Japan as well as Japan itself.
