Which R2J DVDs, that also have R1 versions released, have PCM/lossless audio, & sound superior to the R1 versions.

At what decibel levels does the difference really become noticable?

[/ QUOTE ]Depends on amplifier, speakers, room shape etc., and on the quality of the DD encoder used for the hypothetical alternative (this is much like with MP3 vs. CD). It should be most noticable with (good) headphones.

Not R2J, but pretty much every R3TW from Proware that isn't 5.1 has LPCM audio. Noir, Patlabor, KOR, Chobits, Please Teacher etc. etc.

Most R2s with stereo audio use PCM. As for noticing a difference, it depends on the specific source, how they compress it (IE AC3, and the bitrate used), your ears, your gear, etc.

PaRappa the Rapper's one that comes to mind, as most already pointed the rest out. Though, if Rodney gets the license in the US... Wonder if it'll come out with PCM... /images/graemlins/relief.gif

Yeah, so is the Yamato, but f- me if it doesn't sound like shit. I'm not sure, but they may have just taken the DD available from the R2s and just converted it to LPCM. LPCM from a DD stream wouldn't be any better than the original DD stream.

Some from my collection that I can remember off the top of my head:

Dominion [Tank Police] (first series only)
Kannaduki no Miko
Starship Operators

Ones that don't have an R1 release:
Air TV
Top wo Nerae! (both original release and remastered version)
The Transformers: Zone

Going through some series I own.
Tenjho Tenge
DearS
Angelic Layer
Tsukihime
Gunparade March
Maburaho
Someday's Dreamers

grep'ing through my data files shows:

AIR TV
Alien 9
Angelic Layer
D.N.Angel
Dokuro-chan (Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan)
Egao, Min'na no Uta (Shinkai Makoto related)
Full Metal Panic
Gakkou no Kaidan
Gakuen Alice
Gunbuster
Hachimitsu to Clover
Haibane Renmei
Hanaukyou Maid-tai
Hoshi no Koe
Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu
Kamichu!
Kanon
Key, the Metal Idol
Kino no Tabi
Komugi-chan (Nurse Witch Komugi-chan)
Kurumi (Koutetsu Tenshi Kurumi)
Mahoutsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto
Matantei Loki Ragnarok
Mizuiro OAV
Mousou Dairinin (Paranoia Agent)
Petopeto-san
Video Girl Ai

Having listed that, the end format is far less important than proper mastering. For example, Dolby Digital 2ch on Fancy Lala R2 sounds amazing.

Dunno about lossless, but Kiddy Grade is LPCM.

LPCM is not compressed at all. It's digitized, that's it. It's the same as a normal PCM .wav file you can find anywhere.

I'm assuming for Patlabor you are talking about the TV series or the OVAs? Because the movies don't have LPCM.

Yes. Looks like it's everything but the movies and Minipato.

Well, it is over 30 years old. /images/graemlins/wink.gif But yeah, I have no idea if all of their titles are "true" LPCM, or if it's just a marketing trick.

Don't give me that 30 yr old crap, look at the threads I've started about Herlock and Ginga Tetsudo 999, they are pushing 26 yrs or so. /images/graemlins/wink.gif (don't take that as me seriously getting angry please) I also have Cutie Honey TV and Mazinger Z, which are over 30.

I understand that old titles won't sound like today's stuff, especially considering it's mono.

All the stuff I listed above is done in Dolby Digital and sounds fine. Yamato R3 sounds like shit. Period. I don't know what Proware was smoking, but it must have been some good stuff if they thought their LPCM track sounded even close to being as good as any of the remastered Toei titles (yes, I know, Bandai Visual released Yamato in Japan, not Toei). Unfortunately I don't have any of the R2 JPN Yamato titles to compare, so it may even be that the DD mixes sounds just as shitty. If the "quality" of the video on the R3s are an indication of the "quality" of the R2s, I am most certainly glad I only paid the price of one of the Yamato R2 boxes to get the entire series!

For the record, the titles I've purchased from Proware, with the exception of Yamato, have been audio/video duplicates of their R2 Japan counter parts. The only differences being the menus, nothing else. Well, some menu instructions on DVD inserts are in Chinese not Japanese, but the actual show and the liner notes/inserts are copies of the Japanese inserts.

Hmm, possible I guess, though I know that's not the case for the Patlabor movies for example. I recently found this page (http://home.gigigaga.com/mycai99/maker.htm) which lists a lot of R3TW releases (Proware mostly) and rates the technical specs like CatsSpat's Animephile. Some of the entries also have screenshot comparisons (check if the link to the cover pic leads to an html or just a jpg) and notes regarding R2s, and it seems quite a few differ both in terms of visuals (albeit slightly) as well as bitrates and such. Unfortunately it doesn't have any entries for the Yamato series, and it looks like it hasn't been updated for quite a while.

Another one not available in R1:

Green Green TV (not sure about the various OVAs/specials yet but I'd assume they are as well, at least the ones released after the TV series)

Don't know whether it sounds superior to the R1 (as I haven't bought that version yet), but Hikaru no Go has linear PCM stereo.

For the as yet unlicensed (or at least unannounced) list, you can add Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito.
