My brother is asking me what would be a good new show for him to get into. He likes shows like Samurai Champloo and GIT-SAC and pretty much everything I can recommend him falls flat. Any ideas?

Peacemaker was interesting enough and had some good action scenes.

Same with Shura no Toki, although the better action scenes came during the second and third arcs, but was still an awesome show.

Cowboy Bebop probably doesn't even need to be mentioned.

Twelve Kingdoms, both for action and an amazing storyline.

...I'll see if I can think up some other good ones later.

And he might like some City Hunter.

I second Gungrave, Heat Guy J and Spriggan from that list, as probably being the best action series of that list, in my opinion.

My guess is that he'll like a lot of the same things my husband does, so:

-Heat Guy J
-Gungrave
-Blue Gender
-Fighting Spirit
-Fullmetal Alchemist
-Naruto
-Cowboy Bebop
-Full Metal Panic

Magic_Knight

Aquarian Age the movie
Read or Die (OVA)
Blue Submarine No. 6
Legend of Crystania (movie)
Cowboy Bebop (TV + Movie)
Outlaw Star
Gunsmith Cats
Spriggan

Tukikage Ran, Jubei chan (1 + 2) both have some good samurai action scenes.

Shura No Toki does have some action, but the good fights are spaced out. And even those are kind of annoying with their "stand in silence for 20 seconds, do a few cool moves, stand back and talk about them and repeat."

I wouldn't recommend Peacemaker as an action series either, but that's just based on the first 3 discs that I've seen. Twelve Kingdoms isn't much of an action series, but it's still excellent.

Personally, I prefer my action with the ladies running the show (and kicking the keister). Hence, Noir, Kite/Mezzo, Najica, etc.

Gun Grave

Cowboy Bebop - Good action, short storylines, great for attention span challenged /images/graemlins/happy.gif (Great anime for everyone else too!)

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust - Action action action

Ninja Scroll: The Movie - It's an action classic

Akira - I hate this, but it's still a classic

Spriggan - Think Independence Day 4 in terms of character depth and action, if he liked that, he'll like this

ROD OVA - I love this! Must watch again...

As for some other recommendations :
Twelve Kingdoms is a personal favorite of mine...but it's not an action movie and action junkies probably won't like it.

Fullmetal Panic!: Action junkies probably won't like this either, there's a lot of comedy and it doesn't have an edge like GiTS or Champloo.

Jin Roh: Probably too slow

Patlabor: too slow

RahXephon: Too slow

Well, anyways, that's just my opinion. I actually like the shows I think are too slow, but since you asked for a recommendation for your brother...

Much as I love 12 Kingdoms, I'd have to disagree that it's an action series. The battles are often poorly animated or skipped entirely with the aftermath being talked about later.

For an action series, I'd recommend Yu Yu Hakusho, although it's not new so maybe he's already passed on it. Once you get past the first disc or so, you get some good fights in almost every episode.

Outlaw Star - Has the perfect blend of action, adventure, and comedy as Gene Starwind takes you on his kickass journey across the universe in his attempts to "make it big"

Bleach when it comes out on R1.

Gungrave might do the trick.
FMP
Outlaw Star
Berserk - animation isn't as fluid as some of the newer releases, but the content rules.

I saw the trailer and it looked tight as hell...

do I need the first series to enjoy this one?

... Yes, I'm interested since it's a MADHOUSE project *and with DAICHI... yay*

J2 is pretty awesome, and seeing the 1st season first is a must, in my opinion.

Like to reccomend Cyber City Oedo 808. Three episode sci-fi series from the director of VHD: Bloodlust, though a bit more action oriented than GITS:SAC.

You forgot Agent Aika.

If he can find any, a City Hunter set or special is cool.

Either Original Dirty Pair set is a good choice as well, with the OVAs as 1st choice of the 2.

Nah, I remembered, I just decided to highlight Najica in its place. Anyway, when I think of "action" as a genre, I tend to think of shows with fewer fanciful sci-fi/fantasy elements than Aika has. I do like it, though.

City Hunter is awesome /images/graemlins/cool.gif

I always liked the movies for em, then I got to see a couple of episodes from the tv series. damn. that was real good. If you are going to get him a City Hunter OVA, I would have to say the Bay City Wars/Million Dollar Conspiracy DVD. MDC is a bit cliché, but to me it's the definitive CH OVA /images/graemlins/wink.gif This disc also has a bonus city hunter tv ep. (note the City Hunter TV series is available in subtitled only, the show is still pretty rockin' if you ask me)

Well... Basilisk is coming out this summer (roughly Aug.) /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif we were watching the title last year in anime club. it is so great. Two warring ninja clans with a little Romeo/Juliet relationship in it; but the couple *was stationed* to be married. Just overall fun stuff /images/graemlins/cool.gif I could go into my little story/synopsis of the first episode, but I'll list some titles that are already out there. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Action isn't really my thing, I mostly dabble in that catagory.
I do have a few suggestions.

OVAs & movies:
Gunsmith Cats
ROD OVA
Spriggan (if he has a 5.1 sound system; try to find the newest set with the soundtrack, it's worth it.)
Jin-Roh
Appleseed, but that one is kinda heavy in the mecha department

TV:
Ghost in the shell:stand alone complex season 1&2
Cowboy Bebop
Bubble Gum Crisis 2040
Trigun

Now, there are some action/mystery types that I enjoy alot.
Parasite Dolls (OVA in the BGC 2040 world)
ROD the TV series
Kaze no Yojimbo, this title's a bit slow but worth the journey. Also if you've seen the original or at least seen the adaptation with clint eastwood, you think you've seen the story. Well, there are some good twists in the end of it all. It also has one of the best filler episodes of all time in it. :cool)

No, I mean like... does the story carry over? *got confused, since you added the "in my opinion" thingy in the end*

Because... well, it is a GENEON title, so it's gonna be a bit expensive >_>

Magic_Knight
01-16-2006, 03:57 PM
Yes, the story does carry over, but if you didn't see the first series it shouldn't be too hard to stay caught up. I just think that it would be much more enjoyable if you go into J2 knowing the events from the first one as well as the character relationships. Really though, the first series is great, I don't know why you would want to pass it up and go straight to the second one.

The reason I put "in my opinion" is because I think on the Geneon Lounge site they were saying even if you haven't seen the first series that you can still jump right into the second one. But I think that seeing the first series will really add to your overall enjoyment of the J2.

After a fair amount of thought, the only one mentioned so far that I want to plug a little more is Blue Submarine No. 6. I never saw the original broadcast of this show on American television, so it was quite a surprise when I eventually picked it up, late last year. It's fun, engaging, interesting and BEAUTIFULLY animated. Not perfect, but WOW.

I think that youe brother should really get into this one, though I'm not sure that he'll care about certain ecological philosophies expressed in the plot. The other stuff should balance that out, if it's not his thing.

Madlax!! It's the indirect girls-with-guns sequel to Noir. The story progresses wonderfully, the art is magnificent, the characters are likeable, and the music is pretty good. And of course, there's a ton of action. What's even better for fans is that the English dub is very well done.

Appleseed movie
Appleseed:Ex Machina is better
Vexille.

All have breathtaking fight & destruction scenes.

Black Lagoon (avoid the sewage dub), especially Second Barrage is mayhem all the way.

Angel Cop is hardcore bloodshed.
