Any Canadian received something recently from Amazon.jp? I received a R2 boxset from Amazon.jp yesterday. Aside from the GST/PST+handling fee I normally pay, there was an extra duty fee of 6%. Is this something new for 2006? Anyone with similar experience?

my first r2 order for 2006 from AJ will come later this month, my statement for custom fees (if that's what you're asking) usually comes later (2 months or so).

I assume you're using DHL express if the customs fees statement comes ~2 months later. Mine was shipped with standard shipping. Looks like it goes to the US then transfers to USPS then to Canada Post. Canada Post charges you right away when you pickup. I bought a box set that comes out to ~C$200. My total customs charge was ~C$30 for GST+PST, C$5 for handling, and ~C$12 for duty. I never had to pay for the duty portion for importing DVDs in the past. Guess it might be something new or they screwed up.

Yeah I just received a customs fee form from DHL a few days ago. There is a "duty" line worth about 6% of the value of the order. I don't recall being charged for this in the past. /images/graemlins/sad.gif

The order itself was shipped and paid in November,

Not Amazon.jp, but I got the 6% duty with EMS shipping before, and it was handled by Canada Post with iirc $8 instead of $5 handeling fee too...

Sounds like Canada post is starting to collect the 6% too. I had a DHL shipment from amazon.jp in Dec. I haven't gotten any customs fee statement yet. I guess I can expect to be paying an extra 6% as well. /images/graemlins/sad.gif

If you are buying enough for that 6% to be significant, you might want to pay for a postal proxy service in the US to receive and repackage / reship the items to you. You could also use this to consolidate shipments, thus saving you money on the $5.00 customs handling fees.
