View Full Version : Anime Rationing

I have a problem. Every 6 months or so, I stock up on anime with a few titles and watch them over the next few months, before going out and buying more
However. I dont like watching more than 1 episode a day, because it will run out too fast [sometimes I dont watch any for 4 or so days, then watch 4 in a row if i've got time]
Whats your anime rationing like?

I will watch what I feel like watching. Sometimes I marathon and there are stretches of a few weeks where I watch nothing.
However, since I got Netflix last month, I've been a bit more regular. I probably average 2 CDs a week.

I used to watch one episode per week for series that were still coming out. The idea was to shorten the length between the last episode of one volume and first episode of the next. I've cut back on that practice lately just because I'm not collecting as many running series these days.
Now that I'm getting more collections, I try to watch an episode or two per day of whatever I've got on the queue. That's more a matter of time constraints rather than intentional rationing, though.

I tend to buy a fair bit of anime, so rationing doesnt really work for me.
I usually buy complete series (keepcases only if possible! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif) and then I marathon them. Preferably the entire series in a single sitting. Of course, considering I have anime arriving every week pretty much, this really is the only way to watch everything and not start building up a backlog.
I don't really ration since I watch whatever I have ASAP. It usually takes me one night per DVD, so depending on how much I bought, it can be over really quickly or take a week or two. I just rewatch so old anime on nights I don't have anything new to watch or I watch the Hollywood movies I rent.

Im building up a backlog sadly. 87 dvd currently I have waiting on my shelf to watch. I have problems with time and also when I feel like watching. /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Yeah, I'm currently in the process of catching up on all the anime I've not watched for the past 2 years. Got a huge backlog list that's just sad. I've forgotten how long I've had some titles. I'm just(really, watching ep.1 right now)getting to watching Gate Keepers and I know it's been on my shelves for at least a bit over a year if not longer.
Rationing isn't an option for me. I start a series and and don't watch another til I finish it. I have tried switching from show to show, but just found myself thinking about the previous show. In the last week and a half I've finished up You're Under Arrest TV & Movie, Gad Guard, Rurouni Kenshin TV, Movie & OAVs and Genshiken.

I don't really ration my anime watching. I watch when I have time to or want to--prioritized in that order.
For instance, I recently acquired the other 6 Kiddy Grade DVDs that I needed to finish the series, I blitzed through 21 episodes in one aitting. I also finished Cardcaptor Sakura in two weeks after I got it--I would've finished it more quickly had I not been swamped with finals. In retrospect, I should probably space out my watching habit just so that I'll have new stuff that I want to watch when I want to as I have nothing I want to watch right now sitting on my backlog.

I watch a DVD a day. I don't even think about running out, actually, I look foward to clearing my backlog.

Another who doesn't ration. I feel like watching, I watch. If I don't feel like watching, I don't (and usually don't buy until I'm caught up /images/graemlins/tongue.gif)

Very, very variable. When classes are in session, I watch much less so it's basically rationed for me out from sheer lack of free time.
However, I'm currently on winter break still, so I've been watching a *lot* of stuff. I've been trying to ration certain shows, specifically Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, which I started watching recently. I'd be totally cool with just blowing through the whole show because it's really that good, but on the other hand I don't want to be done it TOO fast. I try to keep it to a few eps a night, and to even skip some nights (not easy) to make it last longer. Since it's largely episodic so far (a little over half way through), this isn't so bad.
I also tend to ration with unlicensed shows in that if I'm running out fo episodes and think a huge delay is coming up, I'll find a good place to stop and just hold out until I can see the whole series, and then marathon to the end. But for DVDs, I tend to marathon all series by waiting until I have all the discs first before watching (which can result in excruciating waits, a la Stellvia). It might seem silly to spend 15 or something months with the discs coming in one by one and collecting dust until I watch them all but...
Ok, no, it's just silly. But hey, I love marathoning /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif

I could drown in backlog. Out of my entire collection (around 2,000), I've probably watched 1,300-ish. Currently I'm marathon-ing Samurai Champloo and Area 88 TV back-to-back. I'm also picking away at Urusei Yatsura, here and there (it's so easily accessible, unlike many other shows).
It's a good thing I have a lot of free time (at work!) to catch up, or I'd never make it. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
So, I guess I don't know the meaning of the word "rationing".

Heh! Man, where do you work that you can watch anime on the job AND make enough to afford 2000 discs? /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif And can I get a referral? Heh!

Heh...gotta take the good with the bad, though. First, they're 12 hour shifts. Second, they're graveyard (6pm to 6am...which some people might not think is bad, I guess). And third, right now this is my 8th day in a row, and I have three more after this...so I'm kinda worn out.
That said, it's really a pretty good job. Basically I'm on-site I.T. for a computer chip manufacturer. What that means is if the phone's not ringing, I don't have much to do except watch anime and browse the AoD forums (which are all too often very empty in the middle of the night). If you live in SW Washington, let me know and I'll give you a reference. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks to some ridiculous holiday prices I've ended up with a huge backlog of anime. In general I try to watch only an episode at a time from any particular series, but these days I'm watching two or more episodes at once (when I can) in order to reduce the number of discs in my pile.

I really don't ration anime, either.
Well, I guess there is my "workout anime". I walk on my treadmill about 45 minutes every night (basically two anime episodes worth). When I have picked a series to watch while working out, I will only watch that series while working out (gives me incentive to not be lazy /images/graemlins/happy.gif ).
There are long periods will I will watch not much anime at all, and then there are times (like now), where I will just tear through the stuff. I think since Christmas I have watched the following: Saber Marionette J, Saber Marionette J Again, Saber Marionette J to X, All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku, All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku Dash, Idol Project, the first half of Card Captor Sakura, A Little Snow Fairy Sugar, the first half of Chobits, and Hand Maid May.

It doesn't exist. I just watch something whenever I feel like it. Plus since I also sometimes rewatch series, it kind of makes the point of rationing silly for me.

I don't really ration since I'm only collecting one series right now and I try and watch it ASAP after I buy whatever I got.

Well lately I haven't watched any anime at all, at least not for a month or so. I don't center my life around it so I just watch when I have time and I feel like it.

Yeah, I've rationed for the past while and now my backlog is just getting silly. It's not working out. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif Instead of watching 1-2 episodes on a DVD, I need to amp it up to 2-3, maybe 4, and clear my backlog out a bit. Here's what the backlog is looking like right now:
Appleseed movie (unwatched)
Astro Boy 2003 R3K (8 episodes left)
Captain Herlock vol. 1 (unwatched)
Macross TV (rewatch, 33 episodes left)
Dirty Pair OAV vol. 2 (unwatched)
Escaflowne movie (unwatched)
Fushigi Yugi: Eikoden (unwatched)
Gankutsuo vol. 1 (unwatched)
Gatekeepers vols. 7, 8 and vol. 1 of GK 21 (unwatched, need vol. 6)
Mospeada (unwatched)
Gits 2nd Gig vol. 2 (3 episodes left)
Giant Robo (2 episodes left+Ginrei Specials)
Heat Guy J vols. 4-7 (unwatched, need vol. 3)
Here is Greenwood (unwatched)
Inu Yasha season 2 (unwatched)
Captain Tylor TV/OAV (unwatched)
KO Beast (4 episodes left)
Lupin III vol. 1 (4 episodes left)
Master Keaton vols. 1-7 (unwatched)
Master of Mosquiton (unwatched)
Megazone 23 Part 1 (unwatched)
My Neighbor the Yamadas (unwatched)
Night on the Galactic Railroad (unwatched)
Noir vols. 5-6 (unwatched)
Orphen Revenge thinpak (unwatched)
Outlaw Star (rewatch, 8 episodes left)
Patlabor WXIII (unwatched, I want all the Patlabor anime that precedes this movie first)
Porco Rosso (unwatched)
Sailor Moon S (10-12 episodes left)
Sailor Moon S movie (unwatched)
Sailor Moon Super S ("")
Sailor Moon Super S movie ("")
Silent Mobius (10 episodes left)
Soul Taker vols. 1-2 (unwatched)
Steamboy (unwatched)
Southern Cross (unwatched)
Tenchi Universe vols. 3-4 (unwatched)
Twelve Kingdoms set 1 (unwatched)
Wild ARMs vol. 3 (2 episodes left)
Witch Hunter Robin (20 episodes left)
X TV (9 episodes left)
Yeah... not working out at all. /images/graemlins/stunned0.gif And there's more stuff on the way. Not to mention the non-anime DVD backlog.

Until I recently was able to really begin to fund my anime hobby (read addiction), I would watch no more than 2 episodes a night to prolong the enjoyment. Usually I would have a whole series that I got off of ebay and so it would take me about two weeks for a 26 episode series. It's funny when I go back and watch a disk at a time of these because what seemed like a very long story arc back then is over in a single watching. Now though, it's a minimum of a disk a night to cut down the back log.

I don't really ration, I just watch what I feel like watching when I have time.
Of course, I have cut my anime purchases back to just finishing a few titles that I had previously started (because I'm running out of space and my backlog is too big.)
For everything else, there's Netflix.

I wish I could ration my anime. it seems I can't catch up with all the stuff I have. It doesn't help that I watch something twice or more and neglect other stuff. Now that I have cut down on my purchasing, I hope to catch with all my backlog.

I really don't ration. When I get a dvd, I usually watch it within the next couple of days depending on my free time or if a friend wants to watch it with me.

So im the only one who rations? I've got a backlog too, though admiteddly not anywhere near as long as some others here.
Evangelion TV
X TV
Full Metal Panic
Serial Exp. Lain
Noir
Now and Then
Azumanga
Lodoss OVA
Lodoss TV
DNA2
Crest of the Stars
Banner of the Stars
Despite these 10 shows still to watch I feel obliged to ration my watching of Gungrave. I normally watch 2 episodes every 2 days in my room when I cook up some Chicken n' Chips. Last time I watched 4 eps in a row was S.CRY.ed, and I felt strangley guilty about having watched 4 days eps in one sitting. Guess thats just me, probably because I only really know about mainstream anime titles and only seem to get the highly recommended ones
I don't ration my anime, and just watch it when I feel like it.

I also have a big backlog so I pretty much watch something almost every day, generally 2-4 episodes, although if I'm really enjoying a show, I've watched more than that in a row.
However, I do ration in a different way. I generally prefer to marathon series when I watch them, so I will hold off watching a show until I all the DVDs are released, and then I marathon the show.
Currently, I'm waiting on the final discs of Scrapped Princess, Otogi Zoshi, GiTSSAC 2nd Gig, and Planetes before I watch those shows.
I also just marathoned Jubei-chan 2 and Genshiken as soon as I received their final disks.
Since I have plenty of other shows to catch up on, this generally isn't a problem. Some shows though, I can't wait and I watch them as soon as I get them, for example Princess Tutu and Gankutsuou.
I've been watching Samurai Champloo as it is released as well, but since it is largely episodic, it doesn't lose much impact as a show with more of a continuous narrative.
