View Full Version : The Un-Official Anime That Can Translate Into Live Action Thread

The recent announecment of the live action Maison Ikkoku drama made me wonder what other anime properties can feasably translate to a live action show.
For the anime to be considered for live action, you need to take into account if the budget, actors, storyline, and such are able to give the anime a proper adaptation.
With that said, here's 2 anime titles off the top of my head:
Azumanga Daioh- I'm still waiting w/ bated breath for any sort of announcement for a live action comedy! I think it's possible to cast all the females!
Genshiken- This might also translate well considering there are no special effects involved. All they need are a couple of wide shots of Akihabara! They could tape at one of the Comikfests for an episode. I would also be curious to see which actors they can cast for each character (although they can cast any boy idol for Kosaka! /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif).
So which anime do you think can make the translation to live action?

Rurouni Kenshin (TV and OVA): I'm surprised them Japanese haven't done an LA-version of it.
Video Girl Ai (there was a live-action movie before the manga and anime). Easy as pie. It'll be like Densha Otoko, but with more angst and better drama.
Honey and Clover (yes, there's a live-action movie coming out, too). This is easy as well. Regular drama/comedy.
That's about all I can think of at the moment.

I heard somewhere way back the Joel Silver optioned the rights to Last Exile. Makes sense though. Once they run out of comic books and videogames, its next stop anime.

The way I see it, a lot of school-based comedy anime titles can easily be made into live-action (heck, there's already been live-action versions of GTO and Cromartie High School).
Two more titles that I could see as possible live-action titles are Gunsmith Cats and Noir.

His and Her Circumstances would be good.
Initial D but instead of an AE86, it would be a Caucasian or Latino kid doing deliveries for his dad's mechanic shop using an El Camino (which is actually an awesome drift car believe it or not). At one point, he would be doing deliveries around San Francisco, California and would run into Takumi with his AE86 (so we would get a nice cameo or reoccurring role).
Obviously, this series would have an awesome Eurobeat track.

eX-Driver would be cool.
Rahxephon would be so much better to make live action than Evangelion.
While both are fantastical, RX has characters that could be made closer to the anime ones, with less change of personality & loss of depth.
Fancy Lala for magical girl.
Twelve Kingdoms done to Narnia level.
City Hunter (someone more Ryo-like than Jackie Chan)
Master Keaton
Area 88

With a big budget and a big-name fx company, Last Exile would make quite an exceptional live action movie(s) IMO.

I was thinking more of a live-action TV series based in the U.S.

That is an interesting idea. And as much as I'd like to see something like that, considering how well Hollywood treats cars I'd rather not. That and how badly they film cars, mostly in the sound effect department.
And yes, an El Camino does make for a good drift car, Bubba Drift is proof, granted that is a pretty modded car. But I can think of a few more that would be much better as far as looks and stock power train go.
Now if only the end of Jan. would come so I can go pick up that Initial D live action movie.
Oh and I 2nd Gunsmith Cats. Would be totally awesome. But once again, knowing Hollywood, it would turn out quite terribly.

Yeah, that guy is one of our local heroes. Interesting story, he debuted with that El Camino back at Formula D in 2004. He had just bought it about 3 weeks before the competition for $800. During that competion that El Camino was close to zero in actual mods but he surprised everyone (and me) with his outstanding performance

Yeah but they wouldn't have the same WTF reaction from the viewer (similar to the WTF reaction from Takumi beating his opponents with a Corolla).
Also, an El Camino is perfect for deliveries.

This would also work. Corny, but so is Tofu delivery. Make'em a pizza delivery kid, even though it's no longer done, 30 minutes or less and it's free can make a guy learn to drive pretty fast! And the car? Even though I doubt any one on this forum has ever seen one in person, and they are very rare nowadays. It's still Japanese, but it does have an American counter part, the Mitsubishi Starion ESi-R aka Chyrsler Conquest TSI. It's RWD, available in a manual, something a stock Elky isn't(which is the biggest reason I say there's other cars I could think of)has a inline 2.6L 4 cyl turbocharged engine and has excellent handling. Trust me that would also be a huge WTF car. I've already ran into so many people that have literally asked me, WTF is that? with my own Conquest.
Google Starion, Conquest or Starquest to learn more about the car. It's also a really cool looking car, has a stock widebody(barely). Oh hell, just look at mine, I bought it recently just as it appears here (http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2157981). And yeah I know, makes ya think of Takumi's AE86 because of the paint, but hey it looks good like that, to me. Already started modding it even though I told myself I wouldn't for a while.
And to stay on topic. Another anime that would/could transition well into live action is BECK. That would be extremely cool. Only really odd thing would be that damn dog Beck.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing a live action Perfect Blue, wasn't there something about that mentioned before? Or maybe it was supposed to be a live action movie that was made into an anime?

I believe it was said that Perfect Blue was meant to be live action. However, the budget needed for the special effects at that time was far too high, so making it as an anime was cheaper. I'm not sure that would be the case nowadays, since CGI has come a long way and can probably be done a lot cheaper than at the time Perfect Blue was in production.

There's already a live-action Perfect Blue, though it's based on the source novel, not the anime. Here (http://www.midnighteye.com/reviews/perfbyns.shtml)'s a review.

Ah thanks you two. Guess I won't be rushing out to find this version of the live action Perfect Blue /images/graemlins/sweat000.gif. I still would like to see a live action version based off the anime though.

The first thing that popped in my head was Millennium Actress, and followed by Paranoia Agent as most people were naming series.
When I first saw Voices of a Distant Star, I thought immediately that it would make for a great live-action sci-fi movie.
I also agree that 12 Kingdoms with a good budget would be awesome.
Samurai X/Kenshin would be great too, especially the OVA's, or even Samurai Champloo.

Wow, I had never heard of the Conquest but it looks pretty cool and the specs on it are pretty awesome. It definitely would make a person who got beat by it go, "WTF was that!".
I just sold my IS300 this past summer (pic here (http://www.evolutionkakumei.com/carcap.jpg)), but I am in the market now for a second gen MR2 (a 91 or 92 model for its original "oversteer" abilities)
There have been some attempts at car series before but they focus too much on people of wealth and ridiculous circumstances. I think the appeal of Initial D is its comman man theme (along side humble equipment and underdog status) which lets the audience believe that they too can be king of the road...if they only had a Corolla /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif

Well, if your looking into seriously getting a 2nd gen MR2, the most awesome gen, then you should pick up a copy of the January '06 issue of Sport Compact Car. They have a MKII MR2 buyer guide in it that is actually quite helpful. Points out all the things that typically break from age and wear and tear on the cars. What to look for possible problems. I can go ahead and tell ya that a 91'-92' is going to be much easier to find than the laer years(production numbers much lower after '92).
You can probably find and order an issue of it on the web, proably through Primedia, since it's two months old now. Jan. ish and it's 2 months old, can't stnad how alot of magazines are two months ahead of themselves.
Oh and I thought of something that would be really awesome for the whole live action Initial D series. Our hero/main schmo comes upon this intimidating all black car. It looks pretty harmless otherwise but it leaves him in the dust. Dun dun dun, lol. What was it? it was a Buick! A Buick Grand National that is.
I've got the ideas, now if only I had the drawing skills I'd make the attempt at a doujinshi.
