Which are the best quest/search shows, i.e shows where the main characters are looking for either material things or a definitive solution/answer to a situation, or both, with which to acheive a final result/resolution.

The first half of Otogi Zoshi (the Heian arc) is like that. It's excellent despite being very underdiscussed around here.

I believe that Cardcaptor Sakura qualifies as both kinds of quests.
I think that Petite Princess Yucie does too.

Out of all I've seen, I would highly recommend Outlaw Star in that regard. It's one in which a quest/search figures very prominently in the story.

I didn't think of it until I saw the Fullmetal Alchemist thread in this forum, but FMA is actually a great quest-type series.

Haibane-Renmei - I can't say enough good things about this show. Many characters in it are on a quest to understand who they are, the truth of their situation, and the truth in themselves.

Last EXILE - The quest to find EXILE itself is multi-faceted and surprisingly multi-layered when you really look deeply into the world in which the show takes place.

In Revolutionary Girl Utena, Utena is on a revolutionary quest to find her manhood.

I'll go with Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, as the central plot is Nadia's quest to find her homeland.

For another I'll say Battle Athletes Victory, which deals with the goals of a number of top female athletes as well as Earth itself repairing from catastrophe.

Magic Knights Rayearth has the look and feel of an RPG quest adventure. A band of magical girls engages in an epic struggle in a fantasy world to overcome progressively more powerful enemies until they face the final challenge. Of the two TV seasons and the OVAs, I liked the first series the best.

Ping Pong Club - The quest of some horny junior high school boys in getting some booty. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
Negima - The quest to become a better teacher.
Rozen Maiden - The quest to win the Alice Game.
Daphne in the Brilliant Blue - The quest to find out about one's missing past.
Armored Trooper VOTOMS - The quest to find out why everyone in the universe is out to get you and what is so special about yourself.

Three that come to mind immediately are Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece and Samurai Champloo.
All start out initially with one or more people in search of something specific which they travel in search of.

Great Teacher Onizuka. One of the finest quest stories ever told. Young man from a rough background tries to become the greatest teacher in all of Japan and then the world, righting wrongs every where he goes? A better knight errant was never written! (With teenage girls & monkey suits playing a not-inconsiderable part of said quest, of course.)

Fushigi Yugi (although there are a lot of mini quests /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif)

When I think of quest, I think of fantasy, and when I think of fantasy, I think of Slayers. It's not my favorite show, or even my favorite fantasy show, but it certainly defines the genre for me.

Then again, I'm like 99.9999...% sure you've long since seen all the Slayers series twice through by now, so I dunno if you're looking for recommendations to watch, or if you're just curious =P

Second my vote for Slayers here. The series is hilarious to start with, but it keeps getting strong. By far, Slayers NEXT is the best of all three seasons (especially if you're a Lina/Gourry fan like me /images/graemlins/catgirl0.gif) but Slayers TRY also has a very, very good quest involved as well that threw me for a loop several times.

Scrapped Princess.

What, the bad guys' quest to find and kill Pacifica doesn't count? Awww... /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif

I'm also casting my vote for Outlaw Star - Very entertaining.

And then there's also the obvious Champloo - But it would be blasphemous if you'd not seen that yet...

A relative "oldy" not yet mentioned: Record of Lodoss War --quite a good story with decent characters, and available cheap now.

I agree with about 95% of these recommendations, so I will just state which I think are the most quest-like.

Fushigi Yugi - Great story, drama, comedy, adventure
Slayers - Comedy
Gokudo - Comedy

Twelve Kingdoms - Altho not sure if most would agree it's a quest. It's a quest to find her true self which she begins in a barren world of hate and suffering.

Kino's Journey - A great thinking anime, filled with philosophy. The quest here is a journey to understanding life.

Scrapped Princess - I agree with this recommendation. Although she is running to remain alive, it's a quest to find out why she's the Scrapped Princess, and why everyone is convinced she will destroy the world when she turns 16. Good show. (have not recieved the last disc yet)

Lupin - He's questing to steal every valuable thing in the world. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I second this one wholeheartedly. Truly a classic of the genre. Some of the definitions of "quest" I've read on this thread were kinda loose if you ask me...even if the show is great. /images/graemlins/wink.gif But I digress. With Lodoss War, you can also add both of the Legend of Crystania discs, which I found I enjoyed much more when I watched them a couple months ago than their initial viewing several years ago. Good stuff.

Scrapped Princess: Entails a journey of three siblings trying to escape the guards of kingdom who wants one of the teens dead. Combines mideval (sp?) and futuristic aspects.

Infinite Ryvius: I suppose this counts as a quest, in a way. It's about a couple hundred students who are trapped on a spaceship with no adult instructor to help them find their way home. They keep getting attacked by terrorists and need to learn how to work together quick in order to survive. Very much like a sci-fi version of 'Lord of the Flies."

Final Fantasy Unlimited: It's not that great, but it is a quest show. A young boy and girl travel through a mysterious world to find their long-lost parents. May appeal to some, but not me.

Noir: Two assassins travel throughout Europe to find the truth behind the murder of the parents of one of them. The other is seeking the truth about what happened to her before she got amnesia.

Kino's Journey: Another fan-favorite, as the title suggests, a young travler goes from city to city on an adventure. The charm of this series is seeing how each city has it's own little quarks.

I agree. Record of Lodoss War is a fantastic series. I also recommend the Legend of Crystania Movie (http://www.asian-stuff.com/anime/review.php?id=65) and Legend of Crystania OVA (http://www.asian-stuff.com/anime/review.php?id=64).
