I heard it's more than just a shonen-ai anime and it looks very interesting. The R1 release comes out next month so I figured now would be a good time to ask. Is it worth it or should I pass it up?

Loveless is the one boys' love anime that I think stands on its own as a great series in general, not just a great BL series. If anything, calling it a BL/shounen-ai/whatever anime is somewhat misleading, as it encompasses a heck of a lot more than that. Well, that wasn't totally coherent, but it was a necessary preface.
Something to keep in mind with Loveless is that, like many anime adapted from ongoing manga, it's not a complete story. It ends at a fairly good place, all things considered, but there's obviously more that could have been animated. Also, if you dislike angst, you'd be better off avoiding it. A number of characters, especially the protagonist, are quite angsty. They have very good reasons for acting all emo and stuff... still, there are some nice comic relief moments, although overall Loveless is pretty dark.
One of the qualities I particularly enjoy about this show is how it twists things around, at times rather evilly. As an example, in the first episode Soubi appears and randomly starts telling Ritsuka that he loves him. In the second episode, you find out that he did so only because he was ordered to.
The relationships are many and varied, from the BL overtones between the two main characters to the (movingly portrayed & really wonderful) yuri couple that appears later on. The animation isn't amazing, but the style & artistry are. The fight scenes are creative and surprisingly well done. Basically, I strongly recommend this. At three sub-only discs, it'll be rather cheap anyway.
