From what I've skimmed of reviews it sounds pretty funny (really odd and random which is my kinda thing),and the trailer had Freddie Mercury riding a horse out of nowhere, which is pretty awesome.. but is it worth buying? Or should I just wait for the inevitable thinpack release?

I would say Cromartie is okay, but there are been better school series (Azumanga, Doki Doki) out there. If you really want the cultural notes, buy the singles. Otherwise, just wait for the inevitable thinpack release. The singles have been finished being released for about half a year now. I have the singles but it took me a while to get back to this series after buying Vol 1 without a box back in March 2005 (bought the rest late November/early December 2005).

Repetitive observational humor; it tends to hit up the same ideas over and over again, but it can be very enjoyable if you're in the right mood. Sorta like The Ping Pong Club, but without all the plot and wagging genitals.

If you get the G4 channel, this is currently playing on Anime Unleashed.

I've seen the whole series. Quite frankly, I find the humor to be overrated. The only episodes I found remotely interesting were the gorilla episode and the Marimite episodes towards the end. The shows idea of humor is to take a single joke and run it to the ground in endless cycles throughout an entire episode. It doesn't help that the animation is horrible and honestly, it becomes very irritating when they constantly try to save money by not animating the movement of characters' lips.
I suggest you watch Ping Pong Club instead.

Azumanga vs Cromartie HS? Different type of humor. One is fluff, cute humor (which is not my thing) the other is more crude, in your face, off the wall.. which can is definitely can be profound and insane at times. It's a parody of yanki-type series and rely a lot on idiotic behavior.

Cromartie high is definitely wroth picking up if you enjoy that type of humor and have enjoy yanki series in tha past. I didn't enjoy Azumanga because it's simply too cute, redundant and too much fluff. Most anime fan are the "moe" type and will definitely disagree.

Going by your post, it sounds like you should definitely give Cromartie a try. I like weird, random humor as well, and after having roughly the same reaction to the trailer as you did, I bought and really enjoyed the series. The only extras of note (to me, at least) are the booklets; while they're quite nice, they're probably not worth paying three times the price of the thinpack for.

If you do end up buying the series, watch it dubbed and don't marathon it--it just seemed funnier in English and it's best suited for watching in short spurts.

I could definitely relate to the characters in Azumanga Daioh better, but Cromartie's humor is more... "out there" and bizarre. When watched in the right frame of mind, it's a riot. Though I definitely agree that the animation on Cromartie is seriously lacking, especially disappointing since it's by Production I.G.! I mean I know they were going for a more comic book-oriented look, but come on, you can still have MOVEMENT!

Given what you wrote above, I think you'll enjoy Cromartie High School.

For this release, I recommend getting the singles. The inserted liner notes and extras on the DVD will be needed to understand some of the jokes and particulars of the show.

I don't like to see Azumanga Daioh compared to this show. They're nothing alike. Infact you can barely call Cromartie a "school" comedy there is non-existant teachers! None! (unless I quit worrying, "Is a teacher gonna show up?" by the last disc but I'm positive none in volume 1-3) Not really a spoiler but.. Ohyea females too! The first appears in episode 16 Anyways, yeah the only thing it has to do with school is they're at one. No work, no studying, no tests, no teachers, nothing at all that has anything to do with learning. It is simply a setting for random action and attempt to not be bored by these crazy delinquintents (who aren't even delinquints)... and some not human... and some not students... and ... well you get the picture.

I love everything about it. The pathetic artstyle adds to the humor and flows with the kind of show it is. The most idiodic unexpected things happen randomly and sporadically. I thought it would suck, but ended up laughing my ass off before the opening theme got over with on the first episode.

BTW, anyone catch the live-action movie version? Just wondering. I love the packaging for the limited edition DVD (http://us.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/section-videos/code-j/version-all/pid-1004082204/). /images/graemlins/happy.gif

Sorry, meant to reply to this earlier but got side-tracked. Wanted to say thanks for the comments.

As much as I love AzuDai for it's charm and fluff, I have a pure amount of love for comedy that hardly makes any bit of sense (huge fan of Excel, even loved Puni Puni Poemy) so.. definitly sounds like my sort of thing. /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif thanks again.

Oh, why did you have to go and alert me to the fact that the R2 has English subtitles? Now I'll have to spend even more money that I really shouldn't. /images/graemlins/cry00000.gif /images/graemlins/sdsmiley.gif
